--------------------------------------------------------------- ART IN PUBLIC PLACES Title: “Justice” Artist: Lothar Speer Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Dimensions: 3x6 ft 2021-2022 Permanent Location: Monroe County Courthouse Plantation Key, FL, USA It was installed by Eric Berube in its final permanent home, the lobby of the new Plantation Key Monroe County Court House. Following is the official QRC Narrative that was installed at the original painting: “JUSTICE” illustrates the Bahamian immigration to the Florida Keys and its historic contribution to early settlement and agriculture through the introduction of the banana plantation culture. On the right the image commemorates the epic, perilous and innovative construction of Flagler’s railroad. The conceptual fulcrum of Lady Justice as a Caribbean archetype pays homage to this history. Her eyes are not covered by the traditional blindfold but the wing tips of two great white herons reflecting the rich fauna and flora of The Florida Keys. |

Magazine Article from "CANVAS REBEL" on ALAEN LEDESMA FERNANDEZ https://canvasrebel.com/meet-alaen-ledesma-fernandez/ Cuban /Latin American Curator ; famous for MANY Exhibitions through Out the Keys : Alaen Ledesma Fernandez https://www.facebook.com/alaenelchino ABOUT THE EXHIBITION Virtuous: brief notes on pictorial virtuosity At this point, it is very difficult to assume painting only from its contemplative quality. It has already been reorganizing its own existence, physical and theoretical, for more than a century to subvert and extend a paradigm of mimesis that, at the end of the 19th century, seemed decidedly exhausted. The curious thing is that, after the popularization of the post prefix and the deliberate denial of the story of progress, the mimetic and the contemplative returned as valid creative options. Of course, said resignation validated the repetition of old procedures and, therefore, the relevance of resorting to whatever was necessary for the creation of a novel proposal from the intertextual. It is in this environment where hyperrealism plays its card. Although it boasts certain questioning winks towards the consumer society in its origins, it makes an eccentric virtuosity its most visible characteristic. I don't think I'm wrong when I say that a large part of hyperrealist painting - we can't be totalizing either - is known to be intentionally contemplative. And this is neither good nor bad, sometimes you just enjoy looking at it: a hyper-realistic painting would be something like the careful and unalterable execution of an extremely complex piece of music. Now, depending on the operation, this contemplative act can be understood as nostalgic or technological, as painting or “post-painting”: it approaches or moves away from pure eye imitation or the reinterpretation of the process through the benefits or new challenges that it could provide the photograph. And this is almost a processual dichotomy originating in hyperrealism itself, between the purity of painting as an exercise or the technological contamination willing to expand its range. As is evident, “Virtuous” breaks these aesthetic and conceptual limits, now understood as procedure and purpose. In other words, the emblematic virtuosity of the hyperrealist is the central theme here and this, of course, implies the inevitable discussion of media and technical mediations. But if we sharpen our gaze, we could even find in this proposal formal aspects that gravitate beyond the technical framework and the high tones in the creative scale: each artist generates a specific relationship with certain representational referents. For example, the portrait is adjusted to the suggestive restraint of the female face associated with the fashion photography of the first two thousand (Alexander Silva); the landscape moves between almost scientific naturalism (Dionel Delgado González), ethereal monumentalism with surreal twists (Marlon Infante), coastal costumbrism (Yampier Sardinas) and the metaphorical relationship of the dock as a symbol of limitations and continuities (Luis Alberto Saldaña); and the object self-constructs in a contemporary edition of the old still life (Dayron González de Armas). We speak, then, of the mimetic adaptation to a set of symbolic dialogues and affective structures that each image suggests and develops in a personal/creative fields. Everyone shows off his skills in his way, everyone is contemplative in his way. Broadly speaking, “Virtuous” understands that contemplation leaves an important weight to the selective, subtle conditioning to the viewer's interest, a call for attention based on the ability to capture the gaze. So being contemplative is also convincing and using any resource to achieve it; and, of course, virtuosity is still a very effective tool for it. Hiding meaning to seduce formally ends up working as an alternative, an irritating but true sentence. In part, that unabashed irony of using images just to charm the eyes may be why hyperrealism has always seduced me. Key West Police Officer Randy Perez responded to a unique call Monday night: a baby turtle rescue. The tiny turtles hatched on the beach at the Pier House. But instead of heading to the water, they began trekking across the wooden decking of the closed restaurant. With the help and direction of Samantha from the Key West Wildlife Rescue Center, the turtles were safely redirected back to the ocean and a life ahead.

The City of Key West and the U.S. Coast Guard cordially invite the community to the ceremony designating Key West as a Coast Guard City. The ceremony will be held on August 4, 2022 at the Truman Waterfront Park inner mole near the USCG Cutter Ingham Museum. The ceremony commences at 10 a.m. and coincides with the Coast Guard's 237th anniversary. The recognition as a Coast Guard City is a rare and great honor. It is bestowed to communities for their outstanding support of the U.S. Coast Guard. USCG Commandant Admiral Linda L. Fagan will preside over the event. Also on the dais will be USCG District 7 Commander Rear Admiral Brendan C. McPherson, Commander of the USCG Sector Key West Captain Jason Ingram, Key West Mayor Teri Johnston, and Key West City Manager Patti McLauchlin. "We are humbled by this recognition," said City Manager Patti McLauchlin. "Our community has a long history of supporting the military. The Coast Guard plays an important role here. But more than that, its members are part of the fabric of Key West. Being named a Coast Guard City is truly an honor." This designation makes Key West just the 22nd city in the nation recognized as a Coast Guard City. The Coast Guard in Key West was established in 1915. After nearly a century of service, Sector Key West was stood up in 2004. It is a unified command consisting of six fast response cutters, three small boat stations, an Aids to Navigation Team and a number of staff departments. The Sector Commander performs the duties of search and rescue, mission coordination, Captain of the Port and much more. Sector Key West has a unique area of responsibility: 55,000 square miles bordering the territorial seas of Cuba and the Bahamas.
