Key West Art & Historical Society to Offer Free “Art After School Program” at Fort East Martello Museum November 15, 2022 – (KEY WEST, FL). The Key West Art & Historical Society is now offering monthly Art After School classes for children aged 5 to 10 which concentrate on the art and history of Key West and the Florida Keys. The next session takes place on Thursday, December 1, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Fort East Martello Museum, 3501 South Roosevelt Boulevard. Led by the Society’s Education Specialist, Kassandra Collett, participants will learn about the much-revered local artist Suzie Zuzek dePoo. She was a tenacious artist who worked in several mediums including acrylics, ceramics, mixed media, wire sculptures, and textiles. For many years, Suzie was also the lead designer for Key West Hand Print Fabrics and was responsible for creating many of the patterns used by Lilly Pulitzer for her famous shift dresses. In addition to her work at the factory, she also devoted time to create opportunities for other local and emerging artists. “Key West has an incredibly diverse art community. With this new program, we hope to keep that spirit and creativity alive by inspiring this next generation of young artists,” says Collett. “We are very excited to welcome children to the Fort East Martello Museum to explore their creative side in a classroom setting where they can learn about local artists, explore new tools and mediums, and learn new art skills in a relaxed atmosphere.” The Art After School program is free and open to the public. Due to limited seating and materials, registration is required. Classes take place in the Lee Garrison Classroom and all supplies will be provided by the Society. For additional information about the program, visit www.kwahs.org/upcoming-events or contact Collett at 305-295-6616 x114, kcollett@kwahs.org. This project is sponsored in part by the Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and the State of Florida, with additional support provided by The Helmerich Trust. Your Museums. Your Community. It takes an Island.

PAINTER MICHEL DELGADO RETURNS TO KEY WEST After a five year hiatus from the Key West art scene, Duval Square’s Jag Gallery welcomes Michel Delgado with a new series of bold and thought provoking mixed media paintings in a solo show that opened on November 11th. COMPLEX CURIOSITY explores Delgado’s lifelong journey as artist and human delving into the complexities of failure, self doubt and insecurity as well as those elements of the human spirit that Michel has, in his own words, “been able to squeeze out, aligning body and present, all leading to a sense of balance and power “, adding“it has taken a long time to get to this place; emotionally, spiritually and artistically.” Delgado’s unique and significant style and technique will be familiar to those who have followed his Key West career at the former Lucky Street and Kent Galleries and The Studios of Key West, in addition to gallery and museum appearances throughout the US. Studio fine cuban Art to Collect presents beyond the horizons new exhibition of Cuban art with famed Plastica artist Carlos Guzmán. Guzman presents himself as a master of alchemy and theatrical. He is, without any doubt, the architect of a very singular universe in which fantasy and narration occupy the center of all his figurations. His characters seem to come out of children's stories, fantastic stories and dreams. In fact, the artist comments, that many of his images “are related to stories told by my peasant family with Spanish roots. Almost all of them were stories about witches, inventions to transform objects or substances, turn stones into gold or the supposed location of hidden treasures”. The link between his imaginary and the spaces of a cultural memory transmitted orally is evident. The establishment of knowledge is always disparate and cubist, they do not admit the slightest replica and enjoy the power of reproduction.
His pieces seem like small literary works that revolve around the telluric and the mystical. Strange scenarios of the amazing, the metaphysical and the surreal result.
Guzmán thinks of a situation of coexistence and reconciliation in which fantastic characters, machines and mythologies can dialogue, thus feeding the orders of fiction and paradox. His narration connects, in an extraordinary way, with the itineraries of surrealism and mysticism. For him, painting is an allegory, a horizon of meaning, a threshold of alienation. The creation of a parallel universe to the real world is one of the basic motivations of Guzmán's work. In his speculative horizon the idea of a better world is consecrated, that place in which utopia is possible and in which other syntaxes and other grammars are used; other fronts of communication and senses.
Represented in original and daring exhibitions around the world, Guzmán has participated in almost a hundred group and personal exhibitions. His creations are part of important private and institutional collections in different countries. Among his most outstanding individual exhibitions are "The magic of a magical instant" (Miami, 2013); "Changement des tons dans l'auvre de Guzmán" (Paris, 2012); “Carlos Guzmán” (Portugal, 2010); "Another Dimension" (Saint-Martin, 2009); and “Navigating your nights” (Havana, 2007). In 2014, Guzmán was selected to represent Cuba for the first time in the Fourth Annual Art Camp, “Colors for the Planet”, organized by UNESCO in Andorra.
His work is in private collections and museums around the world, including Austria, Germany, Monaco, United Kingdom, South Africa, Russia, Portugal, Basque Country, Brazil, Mexico, Guadeloupe, Venezuela, Spain, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Slovakia. , Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, France, the Netherlands and the United States

DECEMBER EXHIBITIONS
ON VIEW DEC 1-29, 2022/EXHIBITIONS They say change is constant, but there are certainly times when you feel it more than others. Time passes at the same speed overnight, for example, but reaches a crescendo at sunrise. The pop of a seedling emerging from the soil arrives after weeks of slumber as a humble pip. We’ve all been through a moment, so to speak, and invite our artist members to share what’s changed, even if it was always there.
ON VIEW DEC 13-29, 2022/EXHIBITION This past June, a group of watercolor enthusiasts met at the beach, just before sunset, with paints, brushes and open imaginations. Led by beloved Key West-New York artist Susan Sugar, the students learned new ways of observing the ephemeral shapes and transitory moods of the evening sky. A selection of student watercolors will be shown alongside one of Susan’s own in the Zabar Lobby Gallery.

SENT ON BEHALF OF THE FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMISSION
Suggested Tweet: The @MyFWC now accepting applications for new Vessel Turn-In Program – helps owners prevent legal ramifications & costs for at-risk vessels: https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/FLFFWCC/bulletins/33a3d0e #Florida #boating FWC now accepting applications for newly created Vessel Turn-In Program The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is now accepting applications for a recently approved and newly created Vessel Turn-In Program, a key component of Florida’s derelict vessel prevention program. VTIP is a voluntary program designed to help owners dispose of their unwanted at-risk vessels before they become derelict. Upon approval of an application, VTIP will take a surrendered vessel and dispose of it at no cost to the boat owner. Removing the vessel before it deteriorates into a derelict condition will prevent legal ramifications for the vessel owner and will protect Florida’s valuable seagrass resources, marine life, and human life, safety, and property. A derelict vessel upon waters of the state is a criminal offense and can carry serious penalties and fines or possible jail time. “Acting now is the best way to prevent legal action from occurring if the vessel becomes derelict,” said Phil Horning, VTIP Administrator. To qualify for VTIP, a vessel must be floating upon waters of the state of Florida and cannot be determined derelict by law enforcement. The owner must have at least one written at-risk warning or citation and possess a clear title to the vessel. To apply for or view program guidelines, visit MyFWC.com/VTIP or call the FWC Boating and Waterways Division at 850-488-5600 for more information. --------------------------------------------------- |

The organization's mission is to bring veterans together using humor and camaraderie to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide. During Silkies Hike Week you will see veterans dressed in the tiniest of shorts (aka silkies), and on Saturday, December 10th hundreds of veterans will hike throughout Key West helping veterans connect with the aim of eliminating the 22 veteran's suicides a day. The proclamation was accepted by Rodney Martin, Petty Officer Second Class, United States Navy and local coordinator. "On my last ship," he said, "we lost three sailors to suicide and one of them was close to me. Twenty-two a day is a very high number. This organization gives veterans a chance to come out of isolation for a good day of positive vibes, good times, and laughter and just to let them know they're not alone." Petty Officer Martin accepted the recognition wearing his sillkies, the military workout garb. "Don't be shocked or alarmed," he said, "when you see 100 veterans dressed exactly like this because it's for a good cause!"

Poinciana Elementary School fourth and fifth graders got a good lesson in government when Mayor Teri Johnston visited. The students are studying federal, state, and local government. Mayor Johnston discussed her job responsibilities as the Mayor of Key West as well as the workings of local municipal government. The students posed many good questions. "You are the future of Key West and some of you may one day become a City Commissioner or Mayor," said Johnston, and urged them to visit City Hall, attend a City Commission meeting to speak on an issue that they are concerned with. She stressed the importance of being involved in their community.

City Manager Patti McLauchlin, during Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, honored Community Services’ Juana Centeno Hernandez as the City’s Employee of the Quarter. Nominated by Police Chief Sean Brandenburg, Juana is in charge of cleaning the police department and Fire Station #1. “Juana literally never stops working,” said Brandenburg. “She is an excellent example of a workaholic and a true asset that we appreciate very much.” He noted that she has worked at the department single handedly through many difficult challenges. In addition to keeping everything spotless during the COVID shutdown, accreditation inspections, hurricanes, and events that bring a lot of extra officers into the building, she has overcome the personal adversity of recovering from a severe accident. “After recovery from surgery, she came back to work with an excellent disposition and giving the best of herself as she has always done,” Brandenburg said. He noted that, in her dedication, she even returned to work a day early after Hurricane Ian this year, in order to get started right away cleaning up after the storm. “She always goes beyond her duties when it comes to cleaning, organizing, and helping others,” he said. “She is also an excellent mother and wife, taking care of every single detail for her family. She is very protective of her Key West Police family.” In the photos: 1) Employee of the Quarter Juana Centeno Hernandez, City Manager Patti McLauchlin, Chief Sean Brandenburg. 2) Capt. This week Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission commended outgoing City Commission Gregory Davila for his valuable contributions to the Key West City Commission and for his honorable and dedicated service to the people of Key West. Davila, who represents District IV, did not run for reelection after serving four years on the dais. Davila said it was a difficult decision, but he has two sons in school that he needs more time with. In fact, he pointed out, as he was accepting the honor, Key West High School was holding its homecoming parade. Elected in 2018, Davila has remained a dedicated commissioner, business owner and family man. "Commissioner Davila has served his community by volunteering and supporting our youth working as a parent-volunteer and coach spending countless hours on our baseball diamonds, football and soccer fields and public parks," reads the commendation. In addition, he has organized community events through the Mason organizations as well as the Boy Scouts of America, as well as, with his wife Heidi, hosted many community cleanups. The commendation continues, mentioning Commissioner Davila's accomplishments during his tenure. He "sponsored and co-sponsored over 50 commendations, proclamations, resolutions and City ordinances." He sponsored efforts including "Expressing support for the citizens of Cuba," "Accepting the Key West Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan," and "Establishing a free bus pass program for City bus routes for Senior Citizens and Disabled Veterans who reside in the City of Key West. Davila was given a hearty standing ovation as he accepted the commendation ! |
