--------------------------------------------------------------- ART IN PUBLIC PLACES Title: “Justice” Artist: Lothar Speer Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Dimensions: 3x6 ft 2021-2022 Permanent Location: Monroe County Courthouse Plantation Key, FL, USA It was installed by Eric Berube in its final permanent home, the lobby of the new Plantation Key Monroe County Court House. Following is the official QRC Narrative that was installed at the original painting: “JUSTICE” illustrates the Bahamian immigration to the Florida Keys and its historic contribution to early settlement and agriculture through the introduction of the banana plantation culture. On the right the image commemorates the epic, perilous and innovative construction of Flagler’s railroad. The conceptual fulcrum of Lady Justice as a Caribbean archetype pays homage to this history. Her eyes are not covered by the traditional blindfold but the wing tips of two great white herons reflecting the rich fauna and flora of The Florida Keys. |

MONROE COUNTY’S COLDIRON AND MERRILL RASCHEIN ELECTED TO THE FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES BOARD MONROE COUNTY, FL – Monroe County Commissioners Michelle Coldiron and Holly Merrill Raschein were elected Friday to represent the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) at the annual FAC conference held in Orlando. Commissioner Jim Scholl also attended the conference with County Administrator Roman Gastesi and Legislative Affairs Director Lisa Tennyson. Coldiron was elected by her peers to serve as second vice president of the governing board of the association. Coldiron has been a FAC member since being elected to the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners in 2018. “The amount of knowledge and networking exchanged is immeasurable, and being on the executive board will allow Monroe County issues to see the limelight on the state level,” Coldiron said. “The connections I’ve made through FAC will continue to benefit the well-being of our county and all of the counties in Florida.” In addition, Merrill Raschein was elected by her peers to the association’s board of directors. “This is really great to have two Monroe County commissioners represent us on this association,” said Tennyson. “Commissioner Coldiron brings her ability to build consensus and is a natural leader, and Commissioner Merrill Raschein brings her legislative experience to the board. Both are a huge asset to FAC.” The FAC Board of Directors comprises one county commissioner from each state senate district (40), five executive officers, six county commissioners appointed at large, and the association’s past presidents. The FAC represents the diverse interests of Florida’s counties, especially the importance of protecting home rule – the concept that government closest to the people governs best – through advocacy, education, and collaboration. —30— Monroe County File Photos Coldiron FAC 2: Commissioner Coldiron joins commissioners from Seminole, Charlotte, Okeechobee, and Wakulla counties on the FAC Executive Committee as second vice president. WWW.CITYOFKEYWEST-FL.GOV July 19 5-8pm City Commission Special Meeting for the PERRY COURT DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT August 2, 2022 City Commission Meeting
It was only fitting that, following the recent Key Lime Festival, the Key West City Commission would declare July 6th as Kermit Carpenter Day. Carpenter, owner of Kermit's Key West Key Lime Shoppe, "is a pie-oneer of the Key lime pie industry who has devoted more than a quarter-century of his life to the perfection, production, and promotion of Key lime pie," according to the proclamation. Aside from his delicious creations, Carpenter is known for his unique means of promoting his business, standing outside the Shoppe in a lime-green chef's outfit proffering a pie to passers-by.

Key West City Manager Patti McLauchlin, during Wednesday's City Commission meeting, honored retired employee Richard Pazo for his 30 years of dedicated service to the City. He started with the City at the solid waste plant, serving as the operator for some time. Later, he joined the facilities maintenance project construction team. One of his favorite accomplishments with Community Services, said McLauchlin, is the fact that he built the tiny town of houses that provide magic for the children every Christmas at Bayview Park. "He's known for his quiet demeanor," said McLauchlin. "He's very quiet. He gets the job done and you never even know he's around." She added that, by what she's heard, he's a force to be reckoned with on the golf course. "Kind of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," she said. She noted that Pazo and she worked together for his entire career. "I for one," she said, "am very grateful that you've been with my team for that long."

Emergency managers and responders gathered this week at the Monroe County emergency operations center for a full response drill. The dry run ensures that communication and coordination run smoothly in the event of a real hurricane. The group worked with a complete scenario of an approaching storm as well as the response to the aftermath. Key West participants included Fire Chief Alan Averette, Interim Emergency Manager Capt. Gregory Barroso, Transit Direct Rod Delostrinos, Police Lt. Joe Tripp, and Fire Lt. Karl Wagner. "These drills ensure that we all work together under the federal incident command system," said Capt. Barroso, "so we can serve the community in the best way possible if a storm hits."

Alyson Crean Public Information Officer Key West Police Department Work: 305-809-1058 Cell: 305-797-0417 acrean@cityofkeywest-fl.gov
Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg accepted reaccreditation from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation recently in Orlando. The commission approved recommendations to renew accreditation made by assessors in April. “I want to congratulate the entire department for having attained reaccreditation,” said Police Chief Brandenburg. “I am particularly proud that our department has earned excelsior status, an honor awarded when a department has been reaccredited five times. “This award is recognition of this department’s commitment to providing the highest level of law enforcement service to our community and our visitors,” continued Brandenburg. “I am proud and honored to lead the professional men and women of the Key West Police Department who embody our core values of respect, integrity, fairness and service.” Chief Brandenburg gave particular accolades to Lt. Jason Castillo and Accreditation Manager Linda Mack for their hard work on the entire accreditation process. In April, a team of state assessors spent three days scrutinizing all aspects of the department to ensure it meets the highest level of best practices standards for the state. Accreditation sets a high level of professionalism in a law enforcement agency. It’s a voluntary process that allows the department to constantly measure itself based upon standards set by its peers across the state. The assessments are conducted every three years, but the process itself is a daily practice in every officer’s career. It allows each to remain familiar with the department’s policies and ensures the most professional department possible. Accreditation ensures to the community a knowledgeable police department that provides the very best service possible to the community. Randy Smith, and Commission Executive Director Danielle Terrell. -------------------------------------------------------- |
