NEW EXHIBITION THAT OPENED LAST MONTH AT THE KEY WEST Museum of Art and History FOR ELIZABETH DEVRIES Contact: Cori Convertito, Curator & Historian Email: cconvertito@kwahs.org Telephone: 305.295.6616 x507
The Key West Museum of Art & History to Open Exhibition Exploring the Sculptural Artwork of Elizabeth Devries (KEY WEST, FL). The Key West Art & Historical Society is pleased to announce the opening of its forthcoming exhibition “Key West Shutter Stories: The Artwork of Elizabeth Devries.” Known locally as Lizzie the Shutter Lady, this exhibition will showcase her sculptural vignettes assembled from historic window shutters salvaged from Key West homes. More than 40 pieces will be presented offering a compelling view of how the artist recreates everyday scenes from reclaimed material. The Society welcomed the public to a special reception on October 12 at the Key West Museum of Art & History, 281 Front Street, to mark the exhibit opening. Devries has been a craftsman in the Florida Keys for over thirty-four years, integrating historic pieces of old Key West into her three-dimensional works. She arrived in Key West in 1980 having no woodworking experience or knowledge of power tools. That quickly changed when she spotted a piece of wood that resembled a book. She set to work acquiring old house shutters – red from Tennessee Williams’ house, olive green from the Hemingway House and purple from the Artist House – in order to fabricate books and shelves to fashion an intricate library scene. Since then, Devries has crafted more than 100 diorama scenes, recreating familiar sights such as Sloppy Joe’s Bar, the Southernmost Point, Blue Heaven, Fuzzy’s Shoe Repair, and the Mariel Boatlift. ““Key West Shutter Stories” perfectly embodies the vision of the Key West Art & Historical Society, meticulously blending artistic imagination with historic vestiges from homes in Old Town,” says Dr. Cori Convertito, curator and historian for the Key West Museum of Art & History. “Her scenes embody a carefree spirit that is synonymous with the island’s blithe ambiance. Devries’ beautiful and intimate portrayals deliver a unique glimpse of her both as a person and artist.” “Key West Shutter Stories: The Artwork of Elizabeth Devries” runs until January 1, 2024, in the Bumpus Gallery and is sponsored by the Florida Department of State, Division of Arts & Culture, with additional support provided by The Helmerich Trust. For more information, call Cori Convertito at 305-295-6616 x 507 or cconvertito@kwahs.org. Your Museums. Your Community. It Takes an Island. ### IMAGE 1: “The Apartment” is one of several three-dimensional vignettes to be featured in the forthcoming exhibition “Key West Shutter Stories: The Artwork of Elizabeth Devries” which opens with a special reception at the Key West Museum of Art & History on the evening of Thursday, October 12. Vintage Photos up next but first some interesting NEWS from your Airport
Airport News November 9, 2023 Katie Atkins, Airport Marketing & Communications Manager (305)-304-7906, Atkins-Katherine@MonroeCounty-FL.gov Departure Lounge Smoking Patio at EYW Permanently Closed As part of Key West International Airport’s ongoing Concourse A project, the outdoor patio in the departures lounge closed Monday, November 6, 2023. The closure was necessary due to operational constraints as part of the overall construction project, but also adds to Key West International Airport’s commitment to providing a safe, clean and healthy environment for travelers. “We have joined more than 600 other smoke-free airports across the country,” said Richard Strickland, Executive Director of Airports. “With November being National Lung Cancer Awareness Month, paired with the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of the month, we believe November was an appropriate month for our airport to go smoke free.” Included in the effort is a donation to Florida Keys Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) in the amount of $2,000. The airport’s community marketing program aims to foster goodwill throughout the Florida Keys with airport revenue funds. AHEC will use the funds to provide informational material about smoking cessation to the nearly 1.4 million passengers who use Key West International Airport annually. Also, as part of the effort, newly appointed Mayor Holly Raschein proclaimed November Monroe County Smoking Cessation and Lung Cancer Awareness Month at the regular meeting of the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners on November 8. The Anne McKee Artists Fund of the Florida Keys, Inc. announces a Call to Artists for the 2024 Fine Art Auction. By popular demand, the auction will be held earlier in the season this coming year: on Friday, February 9th at The Studios of Key West.
The Call to Artists and submission for artwork opens Sunday, October 1st and closes at midnight on October 31st.(Perhaps they will extend the Deadline by a few weeks; certainly worth trying) Online applications and accompanying photo(s) can be submitted from our website at www.mckeefund.org. Artists will be notified of acceptance no later than December 1st. The art drop-off is January 27th with the Auction Preview hosted at The Studios of Key West from February 1st through the 9th. Each participating artist receives 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale of their work, while the McKee Fund receives the remainder to award to other Keys artists for select projects. Founded by longtime Key West resident Anne McKee, the not-for-profit fund has awarded more than $425,000 since its inception in 1994.
Only 50 entries will be accepted due to space and time limitations. The Anne McKee Artists Fund of the Florida Keys, Inc., in its sole discretion, determines whether art submitted will be accepted for auction. The annual art auction raises money for project-based grants to Keys visual, literary and performing artists. Attendees can bid on original paintings, sculpture, photography, fiber art, ceramics, mixed media, jewelry and more. For more information about the Anne McKee Artists Fund and its annual auction and artist grants, visit www.mckeefund.org.

' Brigitte Bardot , (1971) Colorized ' Taken on the set of the film ' The Legend of Frenchie King (Les Pétroleuses) ', O’Neill would often speak about how he managed to capture the moment on film. “ I noticed that when the wind gusted there was the potential for a great picture. When the time came, I only had a few frames left – my last shots. But suddenly the wind swept her hair across her face, and I knew it was a knock-out. ” Authorized by the Estate, this new edition brings a whole new life to this classic work. Artist Clayton Hickman, known for his work on images of The Beatles and Dr. Who, meticulously mimicked the colors by using source materials directly from the O’Neill archive as well as footage from the film.
Limited Edition of only 50 Prints and 10 Artist Proofs. We have edition # 15/50 in the gallery. November 30-December 1 Old Art Out, New Art In
Sooner than later, take a moment to consider if any of your work here at the Art Center has been on display for over a year. Between November 30 and December 1, a group of members will be busy taking down, organizing, and returning all art that has been in the gallery for over a year. Then, the space will be filled with new work. May this act as another gentle reminder to start preparing and keep creating.
