Walk on White is Back - Bigger than Ever!

Since 1999, visitors have strolled White Street on the third Thursday of the month. It has been a chance to view art, enjoy live music and a glass of wine while connecting with others in the community. In recent years, participation dwindled to just a handful of galleries and artists’ studios. That is about to change.

28 businesses between the Armory at Southard and Dairy Queen on United joined forces. Walk on White is back with more energy than ever seen before. With Historic Key West Vacation Rentals and Saltwater Real Estate serving as the generous presenting sponsors, the Walk transformed into not just a celebration of art, but a celebration of local businesses. Participants now include home services, car detailing, restaurants, salons, various retail shops, fitness studios, medical centers, property management firms, and galleries. Every business is doing something and ready to welcome you with open doors!

The season kicks off Thursday, October 19, from 6pm to 9pm with special performances from the Key West High School Marching Band (6:30pm serenade down the street and 7pm performance at Faustos) and Conchettes (6 pm and 8pm at Dairy Queen). All businesses will accept donations to help the KWHS band travel to London.

For a list of participating businesses please check out www.walkonwhitekeywest.com. Tell your friends! Bring the whole family and support your local artists, businesses and all things local!!!!

The Anne McKee Artists Fund of the Florida Keys, Inc. announces a Call to Artists for the 2024 Fine Art Auction. By popular demand, the auction will be held earlier in the season this coming year: on Friday, February 9th at The Studios of Key West.

The Call to Artists and submission for artwork opens Sunday, October 1st and closes at midnight on October 31st. Online applications and accompanying photo(s) can be submitted from our website at www.mckeefund.org. Artists will be notified of acceptance no later than December 1st. The art drop-off is January 27th with the Auction Preview hosted at The Studios of Key West from February 1st through the 9th.

Each participating artist receives 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale of their work, while the McKee Fund receives the remainder to award to other Keys artists for select projects. Founded by longtime Key West resident Anne McKee, the not-for-profit fund has awarded more than $425,000 since its inception in 1994.

Only 50 entries will be accepted due to space and time limitations. The Anne McKee Artists Fund of the Florida Keys, Inc., in its sole discretion, determines whether art submitted will be accepted for auction.

The annual art auction raises money for project-based grants to Keys visual, literary and performing artists. Attendees can bid on original paintings, sculpture, photography, fiber art, ceramics, mixed media, jewelry and more.

For more information about the Anne McKee Artists Fund and its annual auction and artist grants, visit www.mckeefund.org.

Africa Wanderings — Close Encounters of the Wildlife Kind

I suspect over the years we have been on 300 - 400 African Game Drives while on safari and still to this day it amazes me as to how close some of the wildlife gets to us. While some creatures, mainly prey can be a bit skittish some others especially the Predators seem totally comfortable with our presence When we are in the safari vehicle they will often walk right next to and around us. Over time they have become accustomed to and not threatened by the vehicles and really don't distinguish us as separate from the vehicle. It’s not uncommon to come across a resting Lion or Leopard as we crash through thickets making a racket and they don’t even look up.

To be clear when I say close, I mean real close like 1-2 meters away. The vehicles are often open, no doors or windows and if you were foolish enough you could actually lean out and touch them, although that would be extremely dangerous. When they are close it’s important to be quiet, not move around or stand as you don’t want to break the visual plane or silhouette of the vehicle. It’s also very important to always remember that they are wild animals and can be unpredictable. I must say though that getting real close can be both very exciting yet sometimes nerve wracking.

Wildlife Karma, got to love being on Safari up close and personal with nature.

' Brigitte Bardot , (1971) Colorized '

Taken on the set of the film ' The Legend of Frenchie King (Les Pétroleuses) ', O’Neill would often speak about how he managed to capture the moment on film. “ I noticed that when the wind gusted there was the potential for a great picture. When the time came,

I only had a few frames left – my last shots. But suddenly the wind swept her hair across her face,

and I knew it was a knock-out. ”

Authorized by the Estate, this new edition brings a whole new life to this classic work. Artist Clayton Hickman, known for his work on images of The Beatles and Dr. Who, meticulously mimicked the colors by using source materials directly from the O’Neill archive as well as footage from the film.

Limited Edition of only 50 Prints and 10 Artist Proofs.

We have edition # 15/50 in the gallery.

Posthumous Edition: C-Type Print, digitally signed and numbered on the front, estate-stamped on reverse.

The print is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the Estate.

In a recent awards ceremony hosted by the Grand Key Resort, Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg recognized the accomplishment of several of our members for the first half of 2023. Among them were a number of Lifesaving Awards, including recognition of Officer Matt Hansell.

On January 28, Officer Hansell located a female that had been previously been reported as missing or endangered. The woman left a note to her family regarding her suicide and had taken several bottles of prescription medications from her home.

Officers had been searching several different locations for the woman and had not been able to find her. While officers searched the area of the last location for any potential clues or evidence, Officer Hansell doubled back to an overflow parking lot and located the woman inside her vehicle.

She was unresponsive and he immediately began administering life saving techniques. The woman's breathing was shallow, and Officer Hansel ascertained that she was suffering from an overdose. He used department-issued NARCAN and administered two doses, followed by several sternum rubs.

"Had Officer Hansell not checked the vehicles and immediately rendered first aid life saving techniques," said Chief Brandenburg, "the woman likely would not have survived."

Volunteers join phade(r) and Keep Key West Beautiful to Remove Over 300 Pounds of Trash at Smathers Beach Clean Up

Pictured above: 60 volunteers join phade(r), and Keep Key West Beautiful, at Smathers Beach to remove trash and harmful plastics from the local coastline.

Key West, Fla. (September 6, 2023) - Community volunteers joined Keep Key West Beautiful and sustainable straw brand phade(r)<https://www.phadeproducts.com/> at Smathers Beach last Saturday as part of a cleanup that removed more than 300 pounds of trash from the beautiful local shoreline. This effort was the third of three statewide cleanups phade(r) organized with regional Keep Florida Beautiful chapters.

The Key West cleanup was organized to help combat the growing global issue of beach debris and ocean pollution, especially from single-use plastic products that can last in an environment for hundreds of years. While innovative, sustainable products like the phade(r) marine biodegradable straw are designed to prevent pollution, billions of pounds of plastic from years past remain in the ocean and on shorelines around the world.

"Keep Key West Beautiful believes that no cleanup effort is too small and that every piece of trash picked and disposed of properly is one less that has the chance of ending up in the waters surrounding the paradise we all call home," said Dorian Patton, Chair, Keep Key West Beautiful.

"While reducing, reusing and recycling are all extremely important values to help protect the environment, we know it's not enough to keep places like Smathers Beach healthy and pollution free," said Brad Laporte, CEO of phade(r) parent company WinCup. "phade(r) was created so that single-use items will safely return to earth after use, but we're also committed to ridding the environment from plastic and waste that is already here. That's why it was a pleasure to join Keep Key West Beautiful to help clean up the local shoreline in Key West."

phade(r) has grown to be a popular choice with large retailers nationwide who seek to operate more sustainably such as First Watch, Dunkin', Sam's Club, and several sports arenas across the country.

In an awards ceremony Friday hosted by the Grand Key Resort, Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg named Detective Darnell Sealey Officer of the First Half 2023 and Kathy Peters Civilian Employee of the First Half 2023.

Detective Darnell Sealey has been with the Key West Police Department since 2005. He spent two years as a Narcotics, Special Investigations Unit Detective and has now been with the Criminal Investigations Unit since 2015. He has investigated hundreds of criminal cases, including several homicides. He has served as a Task Force Officer for the FBI since 2019. He recently conducted a long-term fraud investigation that took six months and many investigative hours. The investigation led to the arrest of a subject suspected of stealing over $250,000 dollars from his employers.

"Detective Sealey always works diligently to solve every case he is assigned and completes any task he is given," said Chief Brandenburg. "He is very well known and connected with the community, which is vital to solving cases. Detective Sealey always represents the Key West Police Department in a professional manner, bringing distinguished professional recognition to the Department."

Kathy Peters joined the Key West Police Department in September of 2021 as Administrative Coordinator to the Operations Bureau. She handles a wide diversity of responsibilities and does so with grace and humor. Her duties include working with the State Attorney's Office and defense attorneys to coordinate subpoenas and deposition dates.

"She continually takes on extra tasks and makes improvements to the Department's workflow," noted Chief Brandenburg. "Her kindness, smile, and positive attitude brighten even the worst of days."

It happened in May of 2021. Retired Houston Fire Chief William "Tom" Frankum has just completed a sail from Texas to Key West. His crew was settled into a hotel, and Frankum returned to the boat where, suddenly, exhaustion overcame him and he suffered a devastating fall into the water.

Staffers from the Fury kayaked to the injured man while Key West Fire and Rescue responded to the call. Frankum had severely injured his throat, to the point he was unable to breathe and the EMS crew were unable to intubate him. On the spot, paramedic Riely Barber performed an emergency surgery, cutting open his windpipe in a difficult procedure called a tracheostomy. Fire Chief Alan Averette noted that the procedure is rare. In fact, this was the only one that's been required in his memory.

Frankum was rushed to a waiting helicopter and flown to the Ryder Trauma Center where he spent the next two months in ICU.

Frankum and his wife Bonnie were in Key West this week with the specific mission to thank the crew that saved his life. The couple was greeted by Rescue Lt. Kyle Malone, firefighter paramedics Todd Jones, Reily Barber, and Andy Harris, and Capt. Jason Bogoeff - the entire crew that worked that evening to keep Frankum alive.
