The Florida Keys Council of the Arts and United Way of Collier and the Keys presented the Key West Police Department tickets to the Tropic Cinema, thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys. They have been distributing tickets to various Keys arts events with the goal of increasing access to Keys arts opportunities for working residents who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend these cultural activities. The tickets can be anything from films to concerts to theater, symphony, or ballet performances. "By the time working families finish a shift," said Leah Stockton, President and CEO of United Way of Collier and the Keys, "and pay for a meal and babysitter, a night on the town may be financially out of reach." "This is a wonderful way to reach new audiences with the arts," said Council of the Arts Executive Director Liz Young. Through the grant, the non-profits are able to give the tickets to leadership in various organizations and invite them to distribute to staff, clients, students/families and whomever they feel would not normally be able to attend events of this nature. "We hope to inspire a deep interest in the arts as well as provide a fun afternoon or evening out for the working residents of the Keys," said Stockton.

ALWAYS GREAT TO HEAR FROM RALPH DePALMA; Man about town and One of our Executive Contributing Editors
It's easy to conjure up a "What If" scenario regarding the legendary Key West performer Coffee Butler. One evening discussion can lead to another and before you know it --- "What if that 1968 audience, hearing Coffee’s album being recorded live, included a Miami Beach music promoter that was affiliated with some of the larger acts performing during the winter season. This was very much in the realm of possibility with the aggressive nature of local Miami music promotion. " Its a cool story about a magical performer during a magical Miami era. Please check it out HERE |
 |
Coffee Butler came out of retirement to help launch my second book in 2015, the Soul of Key West, Volume II. Get ready for the launch of the Soul of Key West, Volume III, this Summer. We should also receive the new reprint of Soul of Key West, Volume I, this Spring. Keep checking availability and launch date HERE All three great Volumes should be available soon plus the Soul of Havana. Check out the great deals on the Soul of Key West, Volume II and the Soul of Havana now available HERE |
 |
Everyone asks why he wasn't in either of my books. He's kind of been in the Key West version of the Witness Protection program and didn't want to take part. I finally got him to interview and Michael will be included in Volume III with full explanation (longest interview of 145 KW musicians).
Michael has a great story. I can't wait to tell it to you (unabashed book teaser). Michael McCloud recently announced his retirement and is leaving Key West at the end of April after over 40 years. In the mean time collect a few Michael McCloud albums and hang out with him at the Schooner Wharf until April 30th. Check out the story HERE |

Contact: Dora DeMaria Reef Relief 305-294-3100 reefrelief@gmail.com REEF RELIEF CELEBRATES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR (Key West, FL) – February 24, 2023 Reef Relief celebrates Executive Director, Millard McCleary’s 15-year anniversary with the organization. Please join us in congratulating Mill in this exciting accomplishment. Millard McCleary is the Executive Director for Reef Relief. Originally from Maryland, he spent countless hours fishing around Chesapeake Bay. This is where he learned, early on, of the connection of clean water to healthy ecosystems. This led to 18 years of service working with Clean Water Action (CWA) in Baltimore which then continued into the Tampa area. Over that time, he worked on dozens of water quality related campaigns. He was also the lead organizer in CWA’s campaign partnership with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) Working America to establish new offices in several US cities.
Mill came to Reef Relief on March 1, 2008 to help run programs to educate and advocate for coral reef ecosystem conservation, specifically in South Florida. Some of his successes with Reef Relief include establishing the Key West Marine Park in collaboration with the City of Key West and Monroe County, founding Reef Relief’s Coral Camp for Kids program, and joining Reef Relief as a member of the Everglades Coalition. Mill helped implement Reef Relief’s Skip the Straw Florida Keys and Protect your Skin, Protect our Reefs campaigns. Under his leadership, Reef Relief was instrumental in passing several City of Key West ordinances related to these campaigns to further protect our nearshore waters. He has lead hundreds of volunteers in removing hundreds of thousands of pounds of marine debris, organizing Key West’s storm drain pollution prevention and storm water education programs.

The City of Key West wants to thank the Monroe County School Board for recognizing two members of our Fire Department for the work they've done overseeing the Key West High School Fire Academy. Division Chief of Fire Prevention Jason Barroso and Division Chief of Emergency Management Gregory Barroso were each honored with the GEMS- Great Education Moments for Students - Award. The Key West Fire Academy originally began as an explorer program about 15 years ago, then developed into a full 2-year academy 10 years ago. This CTE program establishes a strong foundation. The two-year fire academy trains future firefighters while they're attending their final two years of high school and provides them, upon completion, the equivalent training of a Certified Firefighter I, which puts them halfway through the training required to become a Key West Firefighter. During the training, the students also earn certifications in Emergency Medical Responder and Hazmat Awareness. During the past decade some 150 students have finished the program. Thirteen of them have gone on to finish full certification and join the Key West Fire Department. In fact, Deputy Chief Eddie Perez started with the Key West High School Explorer program. Many graduates of the academy have joined the military or a police force as well as other fire departments. The academy is a team effort with the school and the department. The men and women of the Key West Fire Department work hard to provide optimal training. Investing in local students is a win/win for the students who establish a strong vocation and for the fire department, which has the opportunity to hire young people who are already a part of the community. The Monroe County School District has supported the program all along. In fact, the success of the Key West program moved the district to establish a fire academy program in Marathon, modeled on the Key West program.

Mayor Teri Johnston and the Key West City Commission recognized the outstanding work of the City's telecommunicators by proclaiming National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. The proclamation notes that "911 dispatchers play a vital and often underappreciated role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. They are the first point of contact for individuals in need of emergency services, and their quick thinking, calm demeanor, and attention to detail can mean the difference between life and death." On a daily basis, they face many challenges, including the emotional toll of dealing with high-stress situations and the need to make split-second decisions that can have life-altering consequences. Communications Supervisor Jack Burns accepted the recognition, joined by Telecommunicators Belen Diaz, Brook Colina, and Nick Smith. "This proclamation is a testament to the importance of our work," said Burns. "I'm proud of our team, and we will continue to work hard to provide the best services to our community." The proclamation was sponsored by Mayor Teri Johnston, Commissioners Mary Lou Hoover, Clayton Lopez, Jimmy Weekley, and Lisette Carey, Vice Mayor Kaufman, and Commissioners Carey and Billy Wardlow.

Mayor Teri Johnston and the Key West City Commission have proclaimed April as Leadership Monroe County Month in honor of the organization’s 30th anniversary. The non-profit organization has been educating and informing county leaders for 30 years with the long-term goal of developing strong, dedicated leaders working for a sense of community throughout Monroe County. As Class XXX graduates this spring, the organization has had more than 650 community leaders participate. They represent the Florida Keys business community, educational institutions, governmental entities, health care facilities and practices, arts organizations, and other professions. “The citizens of the City of Key West and Monroe County have benefitted greatly from the educational information provided by Leadership Monroe County to its graduates,” reads the proclamation. Leadership Monroe County Board President Chuck Licis-Masson and a number of graduates representing different classes accepted the honor. “Leadership actually began here in Key West,” said Licis-Masson. “It was starting by the Chamber of Commerce and later moved to the county as a non-profit.” He noted that Class XXX will be having a graduation celebration in Marathon on Saturday, April 29th at the Marathon Community Park. Mayor Johnston, in the proclamation, said she congratulates “Leadership Monroe County on its thirtieth anniversary of teaching and linking leaders of the Florida Keys, and commends this organization for its outstanding efforts to improve our community through education and information exchange.” The proclamation was sponsored by Mayor Teri Johnston, Commissioners Mary Lou Hoover, Clayton Lopez, Jimmy Weekley, Billy Wardlow, and Lisette Carey, and Vice Mayor Sam Kaufman. ENCORE FEATURE It's time again for one of the more spectacular natural events in the Keys -- turtle nesting season. The City of Key West wants to remind residents and visitors to keep the lights out near the beaches so that turtles can lay their eggs in peace and the hatchlings can find their way safely to the water. Hatchlings naturally run toward light, so we're asking that anyone living near the beach turn off the outdoor lighting and close your shades or curtains if at all possible. If the lights cannot be completely doused, try shielding them so that they don't shine toward the beach. Baby turtles are drawn to light after they hatch from their sandy nests. Porch lights can be fatal to these hatchlings. Key West's beaches are closed to the public each night at 11 p.m., and this time of year it's vital that people heed the law. April 15th through October 31st is turtle nesting season -- that time of year when these magnificent creatures crawl up out of the sea to deposit their eggs in the sand. The organization Save-A-Turtle has, in past years, seen evidence that females have crawled up on the beach and returned to the water without laying any eggs. Turtle watchers suspect these "false crawls" may be the result of human interference. Although it's tempting to try and witness this rare and wonderful aspect of our ocean environment, it's not worth the consequences. Nesting beaches have diminished as development has increased over the past several decades. It's crucial that we do all we can to ensure safe nesting beaches in Key West. |

ENCORE FEATURE Vice Mayor Sam Kaufman presented author and Key West resident Judy Blume - along with the cast of the new film "Are you There God? It's Me, Margaret" -- with the Key to the City during its world premiere Friday at the Tropic Cinema. The film is based on Blume's classic book, and stars Rachel McAdams, Amy Brooks, Julie Ansell, Abby Ryder Fortson, and Kelly Fremont Craig. The film was produced by James L. Brooks. The event was a fundraiser for the Tropic Cinema. "It was an absolute pleasure to present the Key to the City to the cast and crew of this fantastic movie," said Kaufman. "It was a special opportunity to recognize Judy Blume and the young actress Abby Ryder Fortson who portrayed Margaret. "I was able to convey to our honored guests that Judy Blume is recognized nation-wide, but she is our hometown icon and hero!" he said. "It was so fitting to have this premier in Key West since the movie and the book are representative of the spirit of our One Human Family philosophy." |

ENCORE FEATURE The Key West Fire Department wants to remind the owners of electric-powered vehicles that, without using the right safety precautions, lithium-ion batteries can be a fire hazard. Fire Marshal Division Chief Jason Barroso has compiled a safety tip sheet to help ensure the community's safety and avoid e-vehicle battery fires. Owners need to always follow the manufacturer's safety instructions for charging and storing them. These batteries can overheat, catch fire or even explode, causing the possibility of injuries, fires and deaths. Over the past years, the Department has seen an uptick in fires caused by unsafe charging of these batteries. "We want to be sure our community is safe," said Barroso. "That's why we've created a fact sheet for the users to ensure they don't have a fire." Some of the pointers are:
* Store batteries in open spaces * Recharge by plugging them directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip * Do not leave them to charge overnight * Keep batteries away from head and direct sunlight * Be sure you have smoke alarms in every room of the house
The Fire Department receives annual donation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and any Key |
