The Village of Thurne in The Broads, England

At first glance you might assume that the bucolic scene in our image is located somewhere in the Netherlands. Or perhaps the Belgian countryside. The windmill in the distance may throw some viewers off, but those structures aren't all that rare in this part of eastern England. The Broads is located mostly within the county of Norfolk and is a system of inland waterways, a navigable landscape of canals, rivers, and lakes—the latter known as 'broads.'

Up until the 1960s, experts believed these lakes were natural. But they were actually formed when peat excavations were flooded by rising sea levels in the Middle Ages. And that windmill—or, more accurately windpump—in our image? Like others in the area, this one in Thurne served to drain canals in the wetlands.

Michael Joseph was born in Kimberly, the Capital of South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, in 1941. His father was heavily involved in Anti-Apartheid activities, especially fundraising, and all of this gave Joseph early exposure to politicians and social reportage from South Africa. On arriving in London in 1962, Joseph studied at The London College of Printing and Graphic Arts. During his time at University he was sent to Vietnam to photograph the war and as a result he was commissioned to many advertising assignments and made his name as a photographer.

In June 1968, Michael spent two days with the Rolling Stones at Sarum Chase in Hampstead and Swarkestone Hall Pavilion, Derbyshire, shooting a series of images that were intended to be used on the cover the album

“ Beggars Banquet.” Joseph went on to have a very successful career working on fashion and advertising campaigns. To this day he is still rarely seen without a camera.

These honors are sponsored by Keys Federal Credit Union and Mary Lou Carn was on hand to present each recipient with a $500 check.

Officer Perez began his career with the Key West Police Department in 2017, having completed the Law Enforcement Academy at the College of the Florida Keys.

"Officer Perez genuinely cares about the community he serves," said Chief Brandenburg. "He can always be relied upon to go the extra mile whether it's providing food and water to migrants or going out of his way to help someone in crisis."

Denise Richardson has been with the department since 2010. During that time she has proven to be a dedicated professional who regularly comes in on her own time during the weekends to ensure payroll is completed and correct.

"Denise has gone above and beyond this year," said Chief Brandenburg, "stepping up to fill some extra vital roles when staff left. Without any hesitation or complaint, Denise has worked three jobs in one without falling behind on any tasks. Her dedication ensured that the department continued to function at its very highest level."

FRINGE THEATER KEY WEST

LILLIAN BAXTER IS BACK AT THE LITTLE ROOM!

SHOW DATES: JUNE 1-4 2022

Fringe Theater announces the return of Lillian Baxter to the Little Room Jazz Club, June 1-4, in the all new FABULOUS Evening with Lillian Baxter starring John Vessels and Jay Schwandt. Musical theater meets cabaret when these two guys perform their spectacular one-woman show!

“Our Key West audience fell in love with Lillian, when we first introduced her in 2016,” says Fringe Managing Artistic Director Rebecca Tomlinson. “I think it was a combination of her knock-out voice and upbeat approach to life’s little foibles. So we keeping asking John and Jay to write new shows for us so we can keep bringing her back!”

This year’s show is a one-woman musical Pride parade of show tunes, gay anthems, and disco. Let’s do the Hustle! Everything will be coming up Rainbows in this All-Welcome celebration of the Night Life, the Love Life, and the occasional stay at the YMCA.

But wait, just who is this Lillian Baxter?

Lillian is a fictional character created by actor and writer John Vessels. “She was almost huge in the 1960s. Her voice took her places that her looks, perhaps, could not,” John jokes, but then he clarifies. “Lillian isn’t a drag act, beyond the obvious fact that I’m wearing a frock or two. Lillian is a fully realized human being living in a comedy format.”

“Lillian never gives up,” explains Jay Schwandt, the show’s pianist and musical arranger. “She might mope, but she always picks herself up and carries on!”

Jay and John both came to theater by way of music.  Jay’s degrees are in music composition, and John’s degree is in opera. On the rare occasion when John is not performing professionally, he teaches voice and acting in Indianapolis, and Jay is an Associate Professor of Musical Theater at Ball State University.

Critics rave: “John Vessels has a masterful level of vocal control which he pairs with a pitch perfect portrayal of Lillian as a super star that never was. And Jay Schwandt shines with his impressive piano skills and arrangements.”

FABULOUS Evening with Lillian Baxter runs June 1-4 at 7pm at the Little Room Jazz Club which is located at 821 Duval Street. Doors will open nightly at 6pm so patrons can enjoy the Little Room’s tasty menu and full bar. Then patrons can stay to enjoy Little Room’s regularly scheduled musical entertainment at 9pm. Tickets are $35 general admission and $50 reserved seating and are available online at www.fringetheater.org or by calling 305-731-0581. Seating is limited so advanced ticket purchase is encouraged.

Fringe Theater is Key West’s community-focused theater which offers unique opportunities for people to see and do theater. Fringe is a 501c3 nonprofit with a vibrant and inclusive outreach and education program. For more information about Fringe, contact info@fringetheater.org

Here are the May 2022 Exhibitions and then to Follow Information on the 2022 SUMMER MANGO MADNESS

GARDENS OF ABSOLUTE TRUTHS by VALERIE HIRD

May 5-26 in the SANGER GALLERYSponsored by GREEN PINEAPPLE

Somewhere beyond right and wrong there is a garden. I will meet you there. – Rumi

Hird, a painter, stage designer and award-winning filmmaker uses the mythical garden as a metaphor to explore how we perceive truth. Narratives favorites familiar from her childhood, such as Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll and The Secret Garden byFrances Hodgson Burnett – among others – are re-imagined for our present day in large-scale paintings, interactive shadowbox gardens and animated videos. Seductively, charmingly, she challenges the viewer to choose whether or not to believe.

THE COLOR OF SUMMER by PAOLA EFFIO

May 5-26 XOJ GALLERY

Sponsored by BESAME MUCHO

A mermaid plays the lyre with a boat on her head. An anthropomorphized cat considers her next move. A dragon smiles with its tongue out like a happy dog. Effio’s charming raku and concrete sculptures appear like characters from a children’s book, leaping into three dimensions.

supported by Anne McKee Artists Fund, the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and private donations.

MAKE IT UP AS I GO by MEME FERRE

May 5-26

ZABAR LOBBY GALLERY Sponsored by OCEAN SOUTHEBY'S INTERNATIONAL REALTY

Miami artist Meme Ferré’s abstract works unite a vibrant natural color palette reminiscent of her Caribbean heritage and the tropical, lush flora and fauna from her garden in Puerto Rico. Ferré believes her artistic gifts should be shared, inspiring her latest body of work, an homage of portraits that capture the essence of her friends and loved one’s personalities, hearts and souls through layers of thick, painterly brushstrokes vastly divergent in form from her abstract landscapes, but with a remarkable kinship in color and spirit.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the artists’ works will be donated to the Maurice A. Ferré Institute for Civic Leadership at Florida International University.

THE SUNSHINE COLLECTION by NELLIE APPLEBY

May 5-26

ZABAR PROJECT GALLERY Sponsored by SHADE CERAMICS & SHUTTER PHOTOGRAPHY

Appleby’s wall-sized cyanotype prints are juxtaposed with plants, oolite and found objects in an immersive installation meant to have you gaze again at the world around you, with praise, consideration and collaborative energy.

The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations headquartered in the Lower Keys, to support projects that will benefit residents in communities from Big Coppitt to Big Pine Key. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 27 and the online application form is available at cffk.org/grants.

“As a Sugarloaf resident myself, I am thrilled at this opportunity to support non-profits in the Lower Keys,” said Dr. Susanne Woods, board chair of the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys. “I know many groups are working to make Big Coppitt through Big Pine a happier, healthier, and even more beautiful place, and, thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Community Foundation can help.”

The Community Foundation has funds to offer small grants, typically up to $3000, to assist with specific programs, projects, and/or urgent needs, not to cover regular administrative costs. All grant decisions will be made by the Lower Keys Advisory Council, comprised of residents of the Lower Florida Keys, who will award its first round of grants in early June.

Applications must be submitted via this online portal. Only 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations headquartered from Big Pine to Big Coppitt may apply. Please contact Kevin Bowes at kevin@cffk.org or 305-809-4992 with questions or for technical assistance with the online grant application.

These grants are made possible by donors to the Community Foundation’s Lower Keys Future Fund, which supports nonprofits in underserved Lower Keys communities in all areas, from the environment and education to healthcare and the arts, and more. Contributions to the Lower Keys Future Fund are currently being matched dollar-for-dollar by the Community Foundation. Learn more at cffk.org/lowerkeys..

George Korn Writes

"We are pleased to be able to report to our supporters that the "50 for 50"

Campaign (A Campaign to raise $1,000 for each of the 50 years of Impromptu Classical Concerts) which we announced in January has been very successful! This source of endowed revenue will ensure that we can continue to fulfill our mission, which is to "provide the best of classical music for all residents and visitors to the City of Key West and Monroe County, performed by the finest artists at the most reasonable prices possible while students can attend free of charge."

As of April 15th, we have received over $90,000 from more than 70 generous donors. Our Campaign will continue until the end of our fiscal year, and we believe that our supporters will continue to give and put our Campaign "over the top" of more than $100,000. We will need that revenue stream because costs of producing a concert of the highest quality are rising steadily.

All the money provided by ticket sales and the generosity of our supporters goes to fund these six concerts. All the work of each of our six performances is done by our dedicated, all volunteer Board.

Below is a list of donors as of April 15th, 2022. If you enjoy the concerts and would like to join in this effort to continue to bring the best classical music to Key West, we ask that you add your name to the list of those who have already given. This can be accomplished most easily by going to our web site: www.keywestimproptu.org.

Again, our deepest thanks to everyone who has made this Campaign such a success!"  George Korn
