The genesis of their business started in 2009, when they started Honest Works Island Pottery, later changed to Key West Pottery. Part traditional pottery production, part fine art gallery, Adam and Kelly have aimed to produce a diverse collection with an authentic expression of modern coastal life. JAG Gallery is thrilled to host Adam and Kelly’s new works on canvas. Naked in the Garden is a collaborative series by both artists. The work is currently on exhibition at JAG until April 14th. The City Commission started off this week's meeting remembering and commending former City Commissioner Barry Gibson, who served as the District IV Commissioner from 2007 to 2011. He passed away last month. His wife Trish Gibson accepted the proclamation, noting how very much her husband loved the community and loved his role as a public servant. She noted that he also served on many volunteer boards, including Take Stock in Children, the Navy League and the Key West Bight Board, on which he served until his death. He was a board member of Rotary, the Jaycees, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and the American Red Cross of the Florida Keys. The commendation notes how much he loved golf, fishing, boating with his wife and daughter, and cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Trish, in accepting the honor, noted that her husband was passionately dedicated to Key West. She added that his last wish was that all of his friends and family over the age of 45 get a colonoscopy. ! |
 |
------------------------------------------------------------------------- City Manager Patti McLauchlin joined a team of dedicated ploggers Friday for the early bird cleanup. "We are so proud to have members of the community who are so dedicated to cleanliness," she said. The cleanups dovetail with several efforts to keep Key West beautiful. Mayor Teri Johnston has reconvened her beautification committee, and the City's new Adopt-A-Spot is moving right along.

Editor's Note : There will be NO Key West Concert in April; but they will be in FTL and Miami South Florida Symphony’s season finale concert commences with Mahler’s fourth movement of his Fifth Symphony — a love note to his future wife — and Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, also referred to Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra (with Harp and Piano). Acclaimed soloist, David Shifrin, joins SFSO for this melodious and jazzy 2-movement concerto, which was originally commissioned by renowned jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman. SFSO’s magnificent 2021/22 season culminates with one of Beethoven’s most celebrated works: his monumental Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major. The “Eroica” Symphony represents a turning point not only in Beethoven’s career — but also in the history of music — setting a new symphonic template for future composers to emulate. This is truly a “Sinfonia Eroica,” or heroic symphony. Tickets from just $15 are on sale now. Student tickets and group rates are also available. The College of the Florida Keys will host it’s 1st VIP Series Event in the New Upper Keys Center. “The Discovery, Early Mapping, and Charting of the Florida Keys and the Gulf Stream.” The presentation, led by local author and map researcher Brian Schmitt, is on Tuesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. at the new Upper Keys Center. In its eighth season, the College’s VIP Series invites the community to learn from the Visions, Ideas, and Perspectives of speakers of local, regional, and national prominence. The 2022 season, sponsored by Centennial Bank, includes presentations that focus on timely and relevant topics. In his presentation, Schmitt will lead the audience on a revelation of historical discoveries through maps of Florida and the Florida Keys dating back to the 16th century. His analysis of early maps and charts of Florida, as well as of the immensely important seaway of the Gulf Stream, tells the story of how geography, exploration, politics, and industry converged to shape the future of the island chain. Schmitt is a co-author of “The Florida Keys: A History Through Maps.” He wrote the book in 2020 along with Todd Turrell and Robert Carr, a South Florida archaeologist. While Schmitt is better known throughout the Keys for his real estate business, Coldwell Banker Schmitt Real Estate Company, he has dedicated many years to researching Florida’s past through his large collection of historic maps. Tickets for CFK’s VIP Series events are $5 at the door (cash only). Admission is free for students at CFK and Monroe County schools. For more information, call CFK at 305-296-9081 or visit the College’s website at CFK.edu/VIP. Advanced tickets are available at Keystix.com |

The United Way of Collier and the Keys, along with our partners at the United Arab Emirates, are celebrating two years of reef renewal and restoration as part of our collaboration to revitalize the Florida Keys coral reefs. As part of this project, UWCK recently awarded over $200,000 to Reef Renewal USA to begin work on restoring the coral reefs at Looe Key. “It’s amazing to think we are two years into this life-changing project,” said Florida Keys Area President Leah Stockton. “Our partnership with the UAE has been tremendous, and we look forward to continuing this vital work in restoring Florida’s coral reefs and ensuring the continued financial stability of our community.” In May of 2021, UWCK awarded $2.1 million to begin restoration efforts at Carysfort Reef in the Upper Keys and Sombrero Reef in the Middle Keys. Earlier this month, UWCK awarded $209,000 to Reef Renewal USA to begin work on Looe Key, located in the Lower Keys. Reef Renewal USA will use innovative techniques to outplant more than 10,000 corals and utilize 5,000 volunteer hours throughout this 4-year grant. “Reef Renewal USA is excited to broaden and strengthen our partnership with the United Way of Collier and the Keys while engaging the volunteer networks of both organizations,” said President Mike Echevarria. In addition to coral restoration, several educational programs are part of the revitalization project. These include marine science education grants to Monroe County schools and educational facilities as well as higher education scholarships awarded to students seeking advanced degrees in marine science-based fields. “Empowering the next generation of reef stewards is a vital aspect of this project,’ said Jessica Dockery, Reef Revitalization Project Liaison. “We need to ensure that the work being done today continues into the future, and these students are the ones who will one day keep the reefs protected.” To find out more about Revitalizing the Florida Keys Through Reef Restoration and Beyond, visit KeysUnitedWay.org. ### About United Way of Collier and the Keys: The United Way of Collier and the Keys (“UWCK”) is committed to improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of community to advance the common good. We will accomplish this through improving education, economic stability and health, as well as providing access to food and safety net services. MONROE COUNTY ACCEPTS DONATED 200-YEAR-OLD LOGBOOK RECORDING THE FOUNDING OF KEY WEST KEY WEST, FL – On Sunday, March 20, the Monroe County Library System accepted the donation of the 200-year-old original logbook of LCDR M.C. Perry’s voyage on the U.S. Schooner Shark, in which he documents the claiming of the Florida Keys for the United States. The book will be kept safely in Key West’s Florida Keys History Center at the Key West library. The book was donated by the Key West Maritime Historical Society and Haffenreffer Foundation after the naval rarity was bought for $52,500 at the Doyle Auction House in New York City earlier this year. The handing over ceremony kicked off the Key West bicentennial week festivities and was fittingly done aboard the USCG Cutter Ingham, docked at the Truman Waterfront. “This is the most complete account of the founding of Key West through the firsthand descriptions of the captain,” said Corey Malcom of the Key West Maritime Historical Society. “The logbook describes in detail the journey that laid the foundation of the first days of Key West.” Within the book and letters to the government from 1822, Key West was described as uncultivated, with a fine harbor to escape bad weather, freshwater springs, and abundant fish, turtles, and Key deer to eat. When Perry claimed Key West for the United States, the area was occupied by smugglers, wreckers, and outlaws. “This is the one and only surviving relic of Key West’s start,” he said. “The genesis of Key West is in this logbook.” No one is sure who had the logbook in the days leading up to its auction. “We are so grateful to be the recipients of this kind of donation. It speaks to the trust this community has for the Florida Keys History Center at the Library, knowing we will keep this type of historical document safe in perpetuity,” said Kimberly Matthews, Monroe County’s Director of Libraries. “There are many valuable assets in the Monroe County Public Library, which is why it is important to maintain our facilities at the highest possible levels when they serve as protectors of these irreplaceable assets.” While the logbook will not be available to checkout, a digitized version will be made available for the public to read at www.keyslibraries.org. Excepts from the logbook can also be found daily in the Key West Citizen’s “Today In Keys History” section -- this week showcases the founding of Key West, known in the 1800s as Thompson Island. ------------------------------------------------------------

Mark Hedden, executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society and artist-in-residence at The Studios of Key West, is perhaps the Keys’ best known “bird man.” His recent “South of Southernmost” photography exhibition documents scenes from fragile and wild Ballast Key, a federally protected haven for birds and lemon sharks in the backcountry flats that lies about 8 miles west of Key West. Hedden has made more than 30 trips to 14-acre Ballast Key, the actual southernmost island in the contiguous United States, filling in as an occasional caretaker when needed. A self-taught photographer, Hedden produced a photo-narrative series, “On the Hook,” about Key West’s liveaboard boat community, and “A Mixed Up, Muddled Up, Shook Up World,” showcasing street scenes during the Fantasy Fest celebration. He’s also been a Shoney’s waiter, pub-quiz quizmaster and publisher of the Bone Island Sun. He’s worked at a comedy club and co-owned an international birding eco-tour company. Today, Hedden pens a weekly “Wild Things” newspaper column. He also enjoys listening to Madonna, playing poker with friends, bike riding around Key West, exploring Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park and hanging out at Green Parrot Bar — where, 28 years ago, he A self-taught photographer, Hedden produced a photo-narrative series, “On the Hook,” about Key West’s liveaboard boat community, and “A Mixed Up, Muddled Up, Shook Up World,” showcasing street scenes during the Fantasy Fest celebration. A recent excursion to West Summerland Key yielded rare sightings of a wild 4-foot-tall American flamingo. Most dedicated birders have a “jinx bird” — one species as-yet unseen and elusive. Hedden’s is the La Sagra’s flycatcher, which breeds in Cuba, the Bahamas and Grand Cayman. He calls bird-watching “a process of discovery that never ends.” Through creative artistry, Hedden hopes to inspire others to discover what an amazing place the natural world is. As well as planning new programming for the 400-member Audubon Society, he hopes to produce books about his unique immersions into Keys life.

Born and raised in Key West, Maestra Sebrina MarÃa Alfonso developed a passion for music at a young age. It lead her to pursue a Bachelors and Master’s degree in Music from Virginia Commonwealth University and doctoral studies with emphasis in conducting from Peabody Institute of John Hopkins University. In 2002, Sebrina MarÃa Alfonso became the first Cuban American conductor invited to conduct Cuba’s premier orchestra, the National Orchestra of Cuba, where she received standing ovations. Several sold out shows and years later, Alfonso received accolades for her appearances as a guest conductor with such esteemed orchestras as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Jose Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony, the Pacific Symphony, the Prague Radio Symphony, the Orchestra de Rus in Sienna, Italy, and the Women’s Philharmonic, among many others. She even conducted an underwater concert for over 400 divers which received world-wide recognition. As a champion of contemporary works, the Maestra has also experimented in composing. Her work Freedom Crossing was premiered to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Mariel Cuban boat-crossing in which thousands risked their lives to gain freedom. Currently, she is collaborating with Thomas Dubois Hormel in creating a ballet with the prestigious Martha Graham Dance Company to the music of The Legend of Bird Mountain. The Maestra explained: “As an artist, when you have access to the composer, it’s more personal. I know him and the beauty in his music is pretty much him. He’s a great soul and incredibly nice person . . . his music captures such beautiful colors.”

Garden Orchids & Seedlings Need Your Help Join us at the Native Plant Nursery at the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden where you can learn to propagate and care for Orchids and the native plants of the Keys, many of which are endangered of being lost. The nursery currently has approximately 1,500 plants in various stages of germination & growth. Orchids need dividing and some TLC to expand the collection. Volunteers are in the nursery on Tuesday and Saturday mornings from 9 am to noon. Meet fellow gardeners when you can. No commitment is needed except for your enthusiasm. Help fulfill the Garden’s mission to “preserve, develop, expand and maintain the garden as an arboretum, botanical garden, wildlife refuge and education center”. For more information, contact Audrey at secretary@keywest.garden or Mary at nursery@keywest.garden. Also visit the website at www.keywest.garden. Roberta sends regards "So the City of Key West is celebrating 200 years today with a ceremony at Mallory Square. Craig Berube-Gray created a concrete time capsule that will be closed at 3 or 4 today and to be opened in 50 years. Plogging The Keys helped the city with clean up around the area. 21 volunteers including 4 from Publix who gave us water at the end cleaned up 54 lbs of trash, 11 lbs of recycling and 3 gallons of cigarette butts!. Tanya, the manager at the Salty Frog offered us all a free breakfast as a thank you for cleaning up around the area. One of the Last Photos below is the Owner of Salty Frog "Froggy" with Manager Tanya". Also below is pictured : Two of the Ploggers: Roger McVeigh, Dorian Patton, Jody Gross, & Dee Dee Green. Kathryn Norris, during this week's City Commission meeting and on behalf of the Women's March organization, presented Officer Anna Anglin with a donation to the Key West Police Love Fund. Officer Anglin is that non-profit's president. The police "have helped us for the past four or five years," said Norris. "Every time we have a parade, they make sure everyone's safe and it's time for us to give back to the community." The $500 donation will become part of a fund that provides members of the Key West Police Department or their families with help during dire times.

Alyson Crean Public Information Officer Key West Police Department Work: 305-809-1058 Cell: 305-797-0417 acrean@cityofkeywest-fl.gov Mayor Teri Johnston and the Key West City Commission took the opportunity this week to recognize Harry Bethel for 50 years of public service. Bethel served on the City Commission from 1991 until 2007. Thirteen of those years he served as vice mayor, earning him the honorary title of Vice Mayor Emeritus. "Harry is the face of what public service is all about," said Commissioner Jimmy Weekley, noting that much of Bethel's service over the years was "pro bono." "Harry Livingston Bethel has served the citizens of Key West and the Florida Keys for more than half a century," reads the proclamation, "through a long and historic series of elected and appointed public offices, and as a public utility employee." In addition to his many years on the City Commission, Bethel has served on a plethora of board, from the Key West Bight Management Board to the Monroe County Housing Authority Board. He was elected several times to the Key West Civil Service Board and has been a member of many social organizations, including the Key West Jaycees, Key West Noon Rotary Club, Elk's Club, Moose Lodge and the Military Affairs Committee. He has enjoyed several gubernatorial appointments. During the first eight years of his service on the City Commission, he championed construction of the Skate Park on Flagler Avenue through private donations, and through his efforts, the Key West Annual Christmas Tree Lighting continues to feature trees provided by a private donor. Bethel is an 8th generation Conch, and the commission chambers were filled with family and friends. "I had the honor of serving my city and my people, my neighbors and my friends," he said, accepting the honor. "I only hope I did well by you." The proclamation ended with Bethel's mantra, "Always be fair and you will always be right," as well as with his slogan, "I did it my way."

The Key West Police Department kicked off National Autism Awareness Month with a colorful gathering of all things awareness: blue badges, puzzle patches, wrapped cars, and even autism awareness horse blankets! The Department is proud to support the Autism Society of the Keys (ASK) to help advocate, educate and support their mission of helping families affected by autism. April is Autism Awareness Month, and this is part of our ongoing effort to support the members of our community with special needs. The community can help support ASK by purchasing KWPD autism awareness patches and challenge coins. Hope Haley, the wife of Lt. Matt Haley, is leading this drive. Both the patches and coins are available on eBay.
