Mars Planet Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System, being larger than only Mercury. In English, Mars carries the name of the Roman god of war and is often referred to as the "Red Planet". The latter refers to the effect of the iron oxide prevalent on Mars's surface, which gives it a reddish appearance distinctive among the astronomical bodies visible to the naked eye. Mars is a terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere, with surface features reminiscent of the impact craters of the Moon and the valleys, deserts and polar ice caps of Earth. |

Venus Planet Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. As the brightest natural object in Earth's night sky after the Moon, Venus can cast shadows and can be, on rare occasion, visible to the naked eye in broad daylight. Venus lies within Earth's orbit, and so never appears to venture far from the Sun, either setting in the west just after dusk or rising in the east a little while before dawn. Venus orbits the Sun every 224.7 Earth days. With a rotation period of 243 Earth days, it takes longer to rotate about its axis than any other planet in the Solar System by far, and does so in the opposite direction to all but Uranus. Venus does not have any moons, a distinction it shares only with Mercury among the planets in the Solar System. |

Mercury Planet Mercury is the smallest and closest planet to the Sun in the Solar System. Its orbit around the Sun takes 87.97 Earth days, the shortest of all the planets in the Solar System. It is named after the Roman god Mercurius, god of commerce, messenger of the gods, and mediator between gods and mortals, corresponding to the Greek god Hermes. |

Jupiter Planet Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System. It is a gas giant with a mass one-thousandth that of the Sun, but two and a half times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined. Jupiter is the third-brightest natural object in the Earth's night sky after the Moon and Venus. It has been observed since pre-historic times and is named after the Roman god Jupiter. |

Saturn Planet Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in the Solar System, after Jupiter. It is a gas giant with an average radius of about nine times that of Earth. It only has one-eighth the average density of Earth; however, with its larger volume, Saturn is over 95 times more massive. Saturn is named after the Roman god of wealth and agriculture; its astronomical symbol represents the god's sickle. The Romans named the seventh day of the week Saturday, Sāturni diēs no later than the 2nd century for the planet Saturn. |

Cape Town is a port city on South Africa’s southwest coast, on a peninsula beneath the imposing Table Mountain. Slowly rotating cable cars climb to the mountain’s flat top, from which there are sweeping views of the city, the busy harbor and boats heading for Robben Island, the notorious prison that once held Nelson Mandela, which is now a living museum.
Table Mountain (Khoekhoe: Huriǂoaxa, lit. 'sea-emerging'; Afrikaans: Tafelberg) is a flat-topped mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa. It is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top. The mountain forms part of the Table Mountain National Park, and part of the lands formerly ranged by Khoe-speaking clans, such as the !Uriǁʼaes (the "High Clan"). It is home to a large array of mostly endemic fauna and flora. |

Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible The PT Cruiser was imagined as some sort of hot rod redux in a modern car, harkening back to the glory days of Chrysler's old muscle cars. But that's not what happened at all. The PT Cruiser has the soul of a minivan and is classified as a truck for fuel emissions, although it's a normal car in all other specs. When they made the Cruiser into a convertible, though, it just got worse. Cruisers do have their faithful followers, and they will probably appreciate in years to come because of their bizarre cult following. |

Bricklin SV1 The Bricklin SV-1 is an abbreviation of Safety Vehicle One, but for a car so named it was bizarre that there was no provision for a spare tire. There were also very few options besides the five colors offered. The gullwing doors malfunctioned if it got too hot too, which made this dangerous. The price doubled in two years as the costs of dealing with failures mounted. Only some 3,000 of these were made and about 2,000 survive. |

Waterman Arrowbile The Waterman Arrowbile landed on this list because of its road capabilities, as it's the first of its kind. You could fly the plane-car hybrid around in the air and also drive on the roads. All you needed to do was detach the wings. Studebaker executives ordered five, anticipating heavy demand. In the end, though, there was much less demand than the company thought such a novelty would produce. Only five of these were ever built. It was a nice idea, but proof that not every concept is worth making for the market. |

Yugo GV The Yugo GV was a two-door hatchback built in Yugoslavia during the peak of the Cold War. It didn't sell well on the Communist side of the Iron Curtain, but for some reason they thought it would sell in America. To compete, the Yugo was the cheapest car on the American market ever, adjusted for inflation. It listed "upholstery" as a standard feature, so that can give you an idea of what kind of lemon it was. It's often cited as the worst lemon of all time. "Yugo nowhere," people joked. |

Chevrolet Chevette The Chevrolet Chevette hasn't aged well at all. In 2011, the New York Times called it "haphazardly made, sparsely trimmed, and underpowered." That doesn't mean the cheap car wasn't a hit though, with almost three million units sold over its 12-year run. All too often, cheap doesn't mean good, and nowhere is that more evident than in the rickety Chevette. The weak engine was capable of producing just over 50 horsepower, which is annoyingly lacking even when you're driving a lightweight car. |

The Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia is a Brazilian commuter aircraft with a maximum capacity of around 30 people. While this aircraft is currently still active, you’ll want to think twice before boarding it because of its less-than-stellar safety record. It first smashed into a mountain near Brazil, and all people in the aircraft were killed. Another fatal crash in a forest killed all 16 people. In 1991, the first out of its two crashes for the year killed US Senator John Tower and astronaut Sonny Carter. The crashes have continued on from 1995 to 2017 with no survivors. |

The Royal Aircraft was designed to be a prototype reconnaissance plane. Its flight performance was stable enough – until a request to have a passenger seat caused several safety issues for the plane. The request was to have a gunner in the passenger front part of the plane to aim and fire a machine gun for the war. Because of this addition, it was deemed as the least safe seat on the plane, and it was recalled. |

The Fairey Albacore was another aircraft meant to be part of the royal air fleet. It was meant to replace an earlier version of the Fairey fleet, but its performance was less than stunning. The Fairey Albacore was a single-engine biplane with a torpedo bomber. It had great amenities, which included in-cabin heating hydraulic flaps, and it was also capable of dive-bombing. However, it was later replaced with a newer and better aircraft. |

The Mikoyan-Gurevich was considered as one of the most common fighting jets during WWII. However, many army men hated flying this unpopular aircraft. One of the aircraft’s main issues was that it was prone to accidents – and its subpar performance during the war was a testament to its less-than-excellent specs. |

The Goblin was envisioned to be the smallest and lightest fighter jet in the world. It was easy to fly, stable, and could recover from spins quite easily. It was meant to escort large bombers as back-up fighting power. It was launched from the bomber’s belly and dropped into combat. It sounds too good to be true, and it probably was because even after multiple attempts, the Goblin did not work. It was able to be dropped effortlessly, but it could not reconnect with the retractable tether. |

She was difficult to work with, never showed up on time for filming (or at all), and was an unpleasant person to be around. She was barred from working in Hollywood, which was probably for the best. Now, she lives in Dubai. |

The 16 and Pregnant star took a huge turn for her incredibly narcissistic and abusive behavior towards anyone who disagreed with her. She was even kicked off of Teen Mom for the drama she caused on and off the set. |

Perez Hilton, who got his name from Paris Hilton, is a "journalist" who pushes all celebrities' buttons. He isn't a paparazzi but he does use their photos for everything. He makes his money purely off of gossip, whether it's true or not. Most folks do not want to work with him. |

Courtney Love was never seen in the same light after Kurt Cobain's death. People questioned her involvement and whether or not she killed him. Her name is too tarnished for Hollywood films, so she was blacklisted. The music industry feels differently about her, though. |

Unlike most Gold Age actors, Pete Seeger was suspected of being a member of the Communist party and actually was. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison but was released much sooner. |

Lena Horne was a big part of the red scare back in the day. She, too, was accused of being connected to Communism and was blacklisted for her liberal views. She was able to make her own career outside of corporate Hollywood and was pretty successful! Sadly, her name was never cleared. |

The development of the Tuga was based on college-wide input, including rounds of nominations, voting, and focus groups. Previously, the College’s mascot was the Wrecker, which had not been embraced in many years. The Tugas’ Spanish-inspired name is symbolic of the Keys’ Hispanic heritage and the College’s diverse student body. Shel, the name of the mascot character, is a nod to the famous poet and Key West resident Shel Silverstein. The introduction of the Tuga comes as athletics return to campus after a 45-year hiatus. Women’s and men’s swim teams made their competition debut earlier this semester at both in-person and virtual swim meets. In 2019, the College joined the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), a requirement to operate and compete in sanctioned athletic events. New Exhibition at the KWAHS (Custom House) But First Lothar Speer Tells Us
Lothar Speer, MFA, instructor at The Studios of Key West and the Key West Art Center, is offering ongoing online ZOOM art instruction for all levels conveying the classical drawing and painting methods, along art historical presentations on technique and famous artist’s lives, and all with plenty of humor, passion and a modern twist.
Lothar studied in Vienna’s National Academy of Fine Art where he received a national award for figure drawing and received his BFA from Chicago’s Loyola University and MFA from Philadelphia’s Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts. The Key West Art & Historical Society is pleased to announce the opening of “Under Construction: Glass Plate Negatives of A.V. Rabenau,” an exhibition of vintage photographs staged in the Bumpus Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street. Curated by Cori Convertito, the exhibition features black and white prints from the original glass plate negatives taken by an itinerant photographer known as A.V. Rabenau. The negatives were acquired by the Key West Art & Historical Society in late 2020 from a private collector. The collection consists of over sixty early 20th century glass plate negatives taken by Rabenau during a visit to the Florida Keys. Little is known of the photographer, but his striking work suggests he was an experienced professional. He visited the Florida Keys during a pivotal time in its history – the construction of the Overseas Railway. The ‘dry plate’ negatives are not dated, but it is probable that he paid a visit to the island chain sometime between 1909 and 1911. “Rabenau was not alone in using glass plate negatives to capture images of railroad construction workers. From about 1870 to 1920, many photographers used fragile glass plates to portray daily life,” says Convertito. “Plates were sold in boxes, factory-coated with a gelatin emulsion of silver bromide, available through mail order or at stores in large villages such as Key West. The photographer loaded one negative at a time into their camera, made the exposure, and stored the negative until he or she developed it in a home darkroom.” Significant portions of Rabenau’s images are staged portraits of the men, women and children living and working on Pigeon Key. Others are portraits of Key West’s residents taken at the time when the photographer established a temporary studio on the island. “The negatives speak to a special time and place in Florida Keys history,” adds Convertito. “Rabenau never published his photographs, meaning the museum’s recently acquired collection brings never-before-seen images to light. You will not find his striking portraits anywhere else. They are a treasure.” “Under Construction: Glass Plate Negatives of A.V. Rabenau” launches with an exhibit opening on April 30, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. that is open to the public. Social distancing and masks will be required in order to adhere to local and CDC guidelines. The exhibition runs until September 2021 and is sponsored by the Helmerich Trust and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. Briggs and Stratton Flyer The two-seat Smith Flyer was renamed the Briggs & Stratton once the rights had been sold. Regardless of what name, it was produced from 1915 to 1925. There were some innovative designs that made this simple, stripped-down vehicle an inexpensive hit in the car market. There were actually five wheels and the wooden planks doubled as a floor and suspension. That being said, its shortcomings were pretty evident by the '20s when seen side-by-side with cars that actually have suspension, windshields, and metal bodies. |

Chevrolet Corvair The Chevrolet Corvair, named so for being in between the Corvette and Bel Air, was produced for the entire decade of the 1960s. In the middle of that decade, Ralph Nader's Unsafe at Any Speed book became a hit. The Corvair wasn't spared Nader's crosshairs, and it was called a "one-car accident" for design flaws that made it a dangerous car to drive. This caused sales to plummet in 1966, and GM decided to concentrate on the Camaro. The company even went after Nader to get back at him, but the damage was done. |

Saturn Ion Lots of companies have produced terrible cars, but the Saturn Ion seems like a particularly bad hit. The company was envisioned as a made-in-USA car that could break into the market, although it seemed like a long shot. When Saturn did just that, it was thanks in part to the Ion. Too bad it was clear that the ion was an under-performing vehicle, as its weak engine wasn't able to handle the massive car, which was the longest four-door sedan on the market. The Ion stopped being made in 2007. |

Original Smart Fortwo Daimler, the company responsible for rolling out all the superb Mercedes-Benz in the world, doesn't usually mess up. When Smart Cars came out with the Fortwo, it was assumed that they had done it again — but not so. Everything from the engineering to the construction was shoddy. It gets hot fast because the cooling system is in the front while the engine is in the back. This bakes the cabin in the summer, which is just the beginning of the issues. The first Fortwos almost killed Smart. |

Reliant Robin You won't find many three-wheelers in America because the design never caught on. A car looking like the Reliant Robin will catch the eye of many stateside, shocked that someone actually drives an automobile that lame. Even in the U.K., where three-wheeled vehicles carry less of a stigma, the Robin has a bad reputation. It has a tendency to fall over that has made it a bit of a laughingstock. Luckily, it's not hard to fix because the Robin's so light you can just prop it back up. |

EAST HAMPTON, NY (April) —Historic Hamptons arts institution Guild Hall (158 Main Street, East Hampton, GuildHall.org) is pleased to announce the artists and events for its landmark 90th season which begins end of May and will feature author Salman Rushdie, American Ballet Theatre, actor and director John Slattery, Emmy-winners Susan Lucci & Joy Behar, 5-time Tony-winner Susan Stroman, Oscar/Tony-winner Mercedes Ruehl, Oscar-winner F. Murray Abraham, Tony-winners Michael Cerveris, Joanna Gleason, Bill Irwin & Cherry Jones, poet Cornelius Eady, artists Julian Schnabel and Laurie Anderson, plus exhibitions with new works from acclaimed American artists Alexis Rockman (Shipwrecks; June 12-July 26) and Robert Longo (A House Divided; Aug 7-Oct 17). This fall at the Academy of the Arts Dinner (Nov 8) at Cipriani Midtown, Guild Hall will include a special 90th anniversary-inspired revue. The first main season event in May will be a virtual poetry performance, Reawakenings, premiering online May 23 at 8pm with Rushdie, Lucci, Abraham, Cerveris, Gleason, Irwin, Jones, Eady, plus Tony-nominees Karen Akers, Tony Roberts & Michael Stuhlbarg, as well as Austin Pendleton, Chris Sarandon, Barbara Feldon & Lynnette R. Freeman. Directed by Paul Hecht, it will feature the cast each performing a favorite poem uniquely/visually paired with a piece of art from Guild Hall’s permanent collection. Additionally, a public work, Full of Noises: a Village Soundwalk has been commissioned in honor of the 90th anniversary, linking the gifts of founder Mary Woodhouse to East Hampton, composed and narrated by sound artist Viv Corringham. In June, Guild Hall will begin its outdoor Play in the Garden theater series with live performances at 8pm for a limited audience/Lawn Circle seats (to also be livestreamed/made available online). The series will showcase works of Edward Albee, Kurt Vonnegut, Wendy Wasserstein and Tom Wolfe (Albee was Artistic Director of Guild Hall’s theater in the 70s, Vonnegut, Wasserstein & Wolfe were also involved with Guild Hall during their careers & all four are members of Guild Hall’s Academy of the Arts). The series will kick off with a Weekend of Wasserstein June 4-5 (a mini-fest of Wendy’s plays, two distinctive evenings filled with smart & shining treats from the voice of one of America’s most beloved playwrights, $100 per Lawn Circle which seats 1-2 people). June 11 will be a staged reading of Happy Birthday, Wanda June by Kurt Vonnegut (his first play which premiered in 1970 and was adapted into a film in 1971; capturing his brilliantly distinct perspective, it’s a darkly humorous, searing examination of the excesses of capitalism, patriotism & American culture in the post-Vietnam War era, $50 per Lawn Circle). The series will continue with Michael Urie and his partner Ryan Spahn starring in Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story July 8-11 ($100 per Lawn Circle), A Night with the Wolfe July 23 celebrating Tom Wolfe, also affectionately known as the Man in the White Suit (the evening will showcase his wit & cultural insights and will include excerpts from his novels, short works, articles & interviews, all told by performers each costumed in Wolfe’s iconic white suit, $100 per Lawn Circle). 5-time Tony-winner and Academy of the Arts member Susan Stroman will direct three unique live theater events Aug 27-29, and Labor Day Weekend Sep 3-4 will be the premiere of new play Crisis in Queens by Academy member Joy Behar ($200 per Lawn Circle). The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden Celebrates Earth Day & Arbor Day KEY WEST, Florida Keys –The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden will be celebrating Earth Day, Thursday, April 22nd and Arbor Day, Friday, April 30th with extended hours and free admission. On Earth Day, Thursday, April 22nd, the Garden is extending its closing time and offering free admission between the hours of 4 - 6pm. On Arbor Day, Friday, April 30th the Garden offers Free Admission all day. The Garden’s plant Nursery will be open for plant sales from 9am to Noon and will offer a 50% discount on Crabwood, Coffee colubrina and Princewood trees. A ceremonial "Arbor Day" tree planting will take place at 1pm. Guided Docent tours will be offered at 10:30am and 1pm. Groups will be limited to 10 people and masks will be required. Registration for the tours can be made in advance by calling the office at 305-296-1504 or in person in the visitor center at time of tour if space is available. A donation of $5 to the Garden’s ‘Student Programs’ is suggested. Earth Day is celebrated worldwide and the day is set aside to promote environmental protection and the concept of peace. Arbor Day is observed nationally to celebrate the role of trees in our lives and promote tree planting and care. EARTH DAY CLEAN UP More than 20 volunteers, many from Publix, joined City staff this morning to clean up under the Cow Key Channel Bridge and the mangroves along North Roosevelt Blvd in honor of Earth Day. This intrepid group filled dozens of trash bags, picked up cigarette butts to be recycled, and pulled unimaginable garbage out of the mangroves. The City’s Solid Waste Coordinator Dee Dee Green organized the cleanup and made sure that all participants had gloves, buckets and pickers. The trash will be measured and weighed in an effort to determine how often these areas need a thorough cleanup. The cleanup is part of the Keep Key West Beautiful campaign, which aims to involve everyone in ensuring our island stays clean and green. First Pic Below : ---------------------------------------
The designation calls attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and impacts every person in this community. The goal of the proclamation is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent it. The proclamation was accepted by Darlene Thomas, President of the Key West chapter of the National Organization for Women and Christine Depre. Depre serves as Sexual Assault Response Team Coordinator and Advocate for Christina’s Courage, a non-profit that provides support for victims of sexual abuse. Nationally One in five women and one in 67 men will be sexually assaulted at some point in their lives. Additionally, child sexual abuse prevention must be a priority for all genders. Incidents of sexual assault has increased on school campuses and in the military. “Our words shape the world around us,” reads the proclamation. “Whether you speak out against locker room talk or help someone better understand these issues, your voice in powerful and necessary in this conversation.”

A dedicated group of people who live aboard at Garrison Bight gathered on Tuesday with City Commissioner Sam Kaufman and the City’s Urban Forester Karen DeMaria to celebrate the planting of two new trees in what has become a liveaboard community park. Colleen Hough approached the City about beautifying what she called “a corner patch of scraggly grass” alongside the parking area, a place where residents, she said, like to sit with their dogs. Residents had already worked to improve the area by scattering some potted plants, a bench and some chairs. But, Hough noted in an email to DeMaria, it still was uninviting due to the lack of shade. According to DeMaria, the two gumbo limbos planted by the City’s Community Services crews, were donated by a resident who had removed some trees. Under the City’s tree ordinance, trees must be replaces when removed, and if there is no place on a property to plant a replacement, the removing entity can donate an equivalently sized tree and the City can plant them on public property. That’s what provided these two healthy trees to the folks at Garrison Bight. Now the little pocket park created by the liveaboard residents will be a more inviting and shadier place to contemplate the nearby water. Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg today swore in Officer Kevin O’Connell as sergeant on his last day of duty with the department. Sg.t O’Connell is retiring after 25 years of service to the city. Born and raised in Key West, Sgt. O’Connell came to the Key West Police Department in 1996. He served in the Army and was a Monroe County Sheriff’s reserve deputy before he joined the police department. Sgt. O’Connell has worked as a patrol officer, a traffic homicide investigator, and a detective. But he is best known, throughout his career, as “the DUI cop” in the traffic unit. Officer O’Connell dedicated many years of his service to Key West to an intense effort that ensures public safety by keeping drunk drivers off the roads. His efforts are recognized and commended by the state. He will remain with the department as a reserve officer. Denise O’Connell did the honors of pinning the new sergeant’s badge on her husband’s uniform. Chief Brandenburg presented Sgt. O’Connell with two plaques – one from the City and one from the Department – in honor of his 25 years of dedicated professionalism and service. ---------------------------------------------------------
KW CITY COMMISSION HONORS TENNESSEE WILLIAMS The Key West City Commission recently honored one of the island city’s prominent writers by proclaiming Tennessee Williams Day. Williams, one of the greatest 20th century American playwrights, lived and worked in Key West from 1949 until his death in 1983. His classics of the American stage earned him two Pulitzer Prizes, a Tony Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and many other literary and theater awards. In addition, his work reached world-wide audiences when his plays were adapted into motion pictures, winning several academy awards. One of his Williams’s major plays, "The Rose Tattoo,” was written, filmed, and premiered in Key West at the San Carlos Institute. March 26th marked Williams’s 110th birthday and was the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Tennessee Williams Museum in Key West. Founder and curator Dennis Beaver and curator Cori Convertito were on hand to receive the proclamation. -------------------------------------------- STATE AWARDS KEY WEST 9 MILLION On Friday Governor Ron DeSantis announced the award of more than $9 million to the City of Key West through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s (DEO) Rebuild Florida Mitigation General Infrastructure Program. The program, administered by DEO, allows local governments to develop large-scale infrastructure projects to make communities more resilient to future disasters. Key West is on of 15 communities to receive the award of nearly $150 million statewide to ensure stormwater resiliency. The award provides Key West with $6.3 million to design and construct a pump-assist injection well at the intersection of Fogarty Avenue and 3rd St. to address flooding in a low-lying area that collects significant runoff. Another $3 million will go to installing tide valves at 40 stormwater outfall points of discharge to address saltwater flooding of roadways, sidewalks, and low-lying properties caused by high tides. “This funding allows the City of Key West to continue to improve our infrastructure,” said Interim City Manager Patti McLauchlin, “improving our resiliency to storms as well as sea level rise.” The funds are allocated to the state through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Community Development Block Grant – Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) program formed in response to the 2016 to 2017 presidentially declared disasters. Other communities receiving such awards include North Miami Beach, Broward County and Lakeland.

Applications and more information on the business placard program are available at www.monroecountyem.com/placardprogram. Applications will be reviewed by Emergency Management within 21 working days. In 2020, more than 200 Monroe County businesses and organizations qualified for early reentry. The business reentry placard program is available only to essential employees directly supporting an essential business and does not include friends and family of those workers. Entering the County using a placard grants access to an area under a State of Emergency that has not been deemed safe. Basic life support resources may not be available in the aftermath of a major event, those entering with a placard will have to be self-sufficient for a period of 14 days, including prepared with shelter, food, and water. “Disaster response takes the effort of an entire community,” said Emergency Management Director Shannon Weiner. “Sharing your business’ skills and resources when needed most contributes to a swift recovery for all.” Residents who wish to obtain or renew a Monroe County Early Reentry Placard for 2021 may do so through the Monroe County Emergency Reserve Corps at www.mercorps.org. Hurricane recovery courses are required for residents to receive the placard. Also, reentry windshield stickers for residents can be picked up at Monroe County Tax Collector offices throughout the Florida Keys with proof of residency and vehicle registration. Monroe County Mayor Michelle Coldiron and the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners proclaimed April as National County Government Month, saying “Counties Matter.” County Administrator Roman Gastesi joined the commissioners for the proclamation at Wednesday’s regularly scheduled meeting. “The Monroe County commissioners and staff take pride in our responsibility to protect and enhance the health, wellbeing, and safety of our residents in efficient and cost-effective ways,” said Coldiron. She also highlighted the unique challenges of Monroe County’s linear geography, which includes maintaining 311 miles of County roads, 26 bridges, 5 libraries, 3 government centers, 3 courthouses, a courthouse museum, an assisted living facility, 3 senior centers, 9 fire stations, and many other public facilities, all while striving to continue its reputation as an idyllic paradise in which to live, work, and play. Gastesi, who returned from a work trip to Tallahassee last week to advocate for Monroe County to be included in the State budget, praised staff during the proclamation. “They know who we are in Tallahassee, and they see the hard work of our county staff across the state,” he said. George Harrison once said when he visited Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco during the "Summer of Love" in 1967 - it was a defining moment when he knew the hippie movement was over. After spending 6 days in Los Angeles, Harrison and his wife Pattie flew in a private jet up to San Francisco to visit his wife's sister and to see what the deal was with all these American hippies. At the time, Haight-Ashbury was the LSD capital of America and was the home to such musicians as Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. Boyd said of their experience: "We were expecting Haight-Ashbury to be special, a creative and artistic place, filled with Beautiful People, but it was horrible – full of ghastly drop-outs, bums and spotty youths, all out of their brains. Everybody looked stoned – even mothers and babies – and they were so close behind us they were treading on the backs of our heels. It got to the point where we couldn't stop for fear of being trampled." Not fun to be a Beatle if the hippies turn out to be aggressive. |

The College of the Florida Keys (CFK) invites prospective students interested in being among the first to attend classes in its new Upper Keys Center this fall to a virtual information event on Tuesday, April 27 at 5:30 p.m. The new 38,000-square foot building is under currently construction in Key Largo and is scheduled to open in August. The new center allows the College to expand its program offerings and to serve twice as many students in the upper Keys. Topics of the virtual information event will include: - Expanded academic and workforce training programs, including business, hospitality, nursing, paramedic, public safety, construction apprenticeships, general studies (A.A.) and more
- Information about the new center and the resources, services, and activities that will be provided there
- Paying for college: financial aid, scholarships, and payment plans
- Steps to become a CFK student
Attendees of the Upper Keys Center virtual information event will receive a code to waive the $30 college application fee. Registration for the event is required.
