July 9, 2020 — SARASOTA, Fla. — Two sea turtles have been returned to the Gulf of Mexico after recovering at Mote Marine Laboratory's Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital. The turtles were released on July 8 on Casey Key near a private residence.

The first to be released was a juvenile green sea turtle juvenile, nicknamed "Hookee". Aptly named, Hookee was accidentally caught by a fisherman on June 20, 2020 in Englewood, Florida.  The fisherman immediately called Mote's 24/7 Stranding Investigations Program hotline and held the turtle until the team arrived. After being transported to Mote's Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital, Hookee underwent surgery to remove the hook from its esophagus. In total, Mote staff cared for Hookee for 18 days before release.

Next up was a far bigger turtle, Joyce, an adult female loggerhead sea turtle. Originally reported swimming erratically by a member of the public, Joyce has been recovering at Mote's hospital since March 27, 2020. It took several months for Joyce to begin foraging on her own and become less buoyant.

The successful rescue, rehabilitation and release of both Hookee and Joyce stress the important role that private citizens can play in aiding local wildlife. If you see a distressed or deceased sea turtle, manatee, dolphin or whale in Sarasota or Manatee counties, report it to trained responders immediately. Contact Mote’s Stranding Investigations Program via their 24-hour hotline at 941-988-0212. Below are additional tips:
  • When calling, be ready to provide a thorough description of the animal, its behaviors, and the location.
  • Take photos and video if possible.
  • Never attempt to rescue or push back any animal in distress.
  • For other Florida counties, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC's) Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922.
  • In the southeastern U.S., call 877-WHALE-HELP (877-942-5343).
Mote's sea turtle activities are conducted under FWC Marine Turtle Permits 027, 054, 070, 048, 028, and 216.

Awesome Foundation $1000 Grant Will Fund Photo-Book for COVID-19 Relief

The Awesome Foundation Key West chapter recently presented a $1000.00 grant to Roberta DePiero and Carol Tedesco to support publishing of a limited edition commemorative photo-book of images shot by 25 area photographers during the “COVID-19 Spring,” taken when the Keys underwent an unprecedented months-long shutdown. Sales of the book will benefit Sister Season Fund’s COVID-19 relief efforts on behalf of workers in tourist related industries including entertainment, hospitality, lodging, and some retail and guest services.
The project, titled “COVID-19 Spring – When Pandemic Met Paradise,” is the brainchild of DePiero, who said she spent a great deal of time during shutdown riding her bike and taking photos. Before long she noticed other photographers were doing the same and the book idea was born. She contacted photographer/publicist Tedesco, a long-time friend with whom DePiero had published a previous photo-book, and the two applied for and received the $1000.00 Awesome Foundation grant, which was soon enhanced by additional donations from Bill and Linda Klipp, Harpoon Harry’s, Simone Lasswell, and Michael Blades and Kathy Kilroy, raising the kitty to $2500.00 of a minimum $3000.00 goal.
“We calculate that with $3000 we can print approximately 200, 8.5x11 high quality soft-cover books,” said DePiero, “which if sold for $49 each will raise nearly $10,000.00 for Sister Season Fund’s crucial outreach during COVID-19.”
“Leveraging the Foundation’s $1000 grant to benefit the community at large is exactly the kind of awesome idea our trustees love to support and fund,” said Awesome Foundation Key West ‘Dean’ Michael Shields. “At this time of critical community need we welcome and invite others with such awesome ideas to apply.”
Photographers contributing to the still-to-be-titled book are: Peter Arnow, Susan Bailey, Michael Blades, Lynne Bentley-Kemp, Joe and Ozlem Berg, Larry Blackburn, Kyle Campbell, Jeffrey Cardenas, Alyson Crean, Roberta DePiero, Ralph DePalma, Heather Dow Todd Feit, Tony Gregory, Connie Groth, Jay Hall, Mark Hedden, Martha Hubbard, Bill Klipp, Linda Klipp, Corey Malcom, Rob O’Neal, Steve Panariello, Carol Tedesco, and Sharon Wells.
With a forward written by local arts advocate Rosi Ware, the book is anticipated to be in print and available some time in August. Anyone wishing to contribute to the printing cost and/or wishing to place advance orders, please contact Roberta DePiero at robertadepiero@gmail.com. For more information about the Awesome Foundation Key West Chapter, visit awesomefoundationkeywest.org or contact Michael Shields at 305-394-3804.

WWW.KWLS.ORG https://www.facebook.com/KeyWestLiterarySeminar 717 Love Lane , 33040. A Message from Arlo Haskell. 305-293-9291 mail@kwls.org

Dear Friends and Readers,

Our board of directors met last week and made the unanimous, sensible, and very sad decision to postpone "A Seminar Named Desire" for one year. It will now take place January 6–9, 2022. We are in the process of reconfirming the roster of presenters, and it appears that all will be able to join us for the new dates, along with others to be named later.

This will be the first January in nearly 40 years without the seminar. For me and for many of us here, it is the center around which the rest of the year turns. But it has become increasingly clear that it is not possible to hold the seminar during a pandemic, which, by all likelihood, will still be with us in January. It will be strange for the seminar not to be there — as so much about our lives is strange now.

As of now, the workshop program is still scheduled to take place in January. The smaller numbers of people involved leave us some room for optimism that it could be held safely come January, and we will continue to evaluate this over the next several weeks.

Thank you for your support of the Seminar during this time, and always,

Arlo Haskell | Executive Director
