The iconic lights on the Strand Theater on Duval Street will soon be restored, thanks to the efforts of Key West city staff members Enid Torregrosa and Kelly Perkins from HARC and
Jim Young of Code Enforcement; Joana Pierce from Walgreen's; and Kevin Lancaster from Southernmost Signs.

Since replacing the original handblown neon lights was not possible, alternatives were researched and look-alike LED lights will be installed instead.
Mayor Teri Johnston is thrilled, saying "I consider this repair an important step towards our overall goal of upgrading Duval Street. I'm very excited to get this fixed."

The City of Key West has completed work associated with a $10,000 grant provided by the Florida Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program.
The goal of the grant was to complete mapping of City owned streets, parks, and greenspace areas. Using the awarded money, the City hired E-Sciences, Inc., an environmental, engineering, and ecological consulting firm from Ft. Lauderdale, to GPS inventory the City owned parks and greenspaces.  There were 1,624 trees in 26 parks and greenspaces inventoried. Information including location, species, size and health of trees was also collected.
E-Sciences reported that the parks and greenspace areas included a significant diversity of tree species with an equal amount of palms and dicot trees represented. The most commonly observed issues with the dicot trees were related to structural issues and discolored fronds were noted as the most common issue with palm fronds possibly related to nutrient or insect issues.
The Urban Forester for the City of Key West, Karen DeMaria, will present the findings of the report at the March 11, 2019, Tree Commission meeting. Funding for this project was provided by the USDA Forest Service through the Florida Forest Service's Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program.
ALSO
Ambassador Academy graduates Meridyth McIntosh, Parlin Meyer, Mary Brady, Fran Decker and Brad Gottschalk will be singing in the Keys Choral Arts Spring Concert, and would like to invite you to attend.

For the third year in a row the Lily Pulitzer boutique on Front Street has donated 10% of one day's sales to A Positive Step Monroe County, which has been serving Monroe County's highest risk kids and their families since 1999. On Saturday, March 23, APSMC's founder Billy Davis welcomed shoppers to Lily P's and explained APSMC's programs. More than $3000 was raised during Saturday's event, which will help fund the APSMC's Idle Hands Summer Youth Employment program, which is partially supported by and run in partnership with the City of Key West. FRINGE THEATER
AIR HEART WITH MARA NEIMANIS
SHOW DATES: APRIL 9-11
FRINGE THEATER SOARS WITH AIR HEART
Fringe Theater takes flight with its upcoming presentation of Air Heart. The production, written and performed by aerial actor Mara Neimanis, is based on the life and flight of Amelia Earhart. Audience and performer will share the stage of the Tennessee Williams Theater for this unique (and very Fringe-y) production to be presented, April 9 through 11 at 7pm.
Who is Amelia Earhart?
She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, the first woman to fly above 14,000 feet, and the first person ever to fly solo from Hawaii to the US mainland. In 1932, she became the first woman awarded by Congress the Distinguished Flying Cross for "heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight."
In 1937, Amelia Earhart's plane disappeared. What happened?
Mara Neimanis envisions an answer in her thrilling and beautiful production ofAir Heart. She combines theater and aerial performance to tell the story of a woman determined to get by on her own merits and determined to stay in the air.Air Heart, which was developed in collaboration with director Bryce Butler and sculptor Tim Scofield, takes place on, above, under, and around a spinning 13 foot steel airplane.
Mara is a protégé of aerial pioneer, Terry Sendgraff. She trained at the San Francisco School of Circus Arts and the New England Circus Center. She was an instructor and company member with Dell'Arte International in California and has collaborated with a variety of national and international theater companies. Mara came to Key West for an Artist in Residence program with The Studios of Key West. She moved to Key West soon after!
"I use aerial work as a storytelling device," she says. "The story of Amelia Earhart is a story of falling and flying, of taking risks and getting lost, but always from a place of heart and courage rather than threat or fear."

Air Heart runs April 9-11 at 7pm On Stage at the Tennessee Williams Theater, located at 5901 College Road. Tickets are $35 general admission and $45 reserved seating. Tickets are available online at www.fringetheater.orgor by calling 305-731-0581.

Artists in Paradise Celebrates Twenty Fine Years
When a few friends came together calling themselves artists in paradise to temporarily show their art work in a vacant store front, they could not know that they would begin a successful art gallery still thriving twenty five years later.
Success followed as the art friends formally created Artists in Paradise Gallery with 19 founding members. A unique feature of cooperative middle Keys gallery is member involvement in all aspects of running the business.
All are invited to attend as Artists in Paradise hosts a twenty five year anniversary party to celebrate this landmark event with a brunch, Sunday, April 14 from 11am to 1pm at the gallery in the Winn Dixie Plaza on Big Pine Key.
From the original 19 members to almost 40 artists now, the gallery features oil, acrylic encaustic and watercolor painters plus a broad array of jewelry, pottery, weavers and sculpture with the focus still on fine art. Throughout the years and through many hurricanes, the gallery has survived and thrived. Long-time supporters of the gallery see the many positive changes; the addition of evening classes, visiting artists in the front windows and nearly weekly receptions in season.
Gallery members credit their longevity to community involvement. Artists in Paradise Gallery prides itself on inclusiveness inviting the Paradise Quilters, area schoolchildren and Florida Keys Council of the Arts Mosaic Project among many others to exhibit at the gallery. To discover events and classes, check the Artists in Paradise Facebook page.
Artists in Paradise Gallery is still in its original location on Big Pine Key in the Winn Dixie Plaza. For further information about the Twenty Five Year Anniversary Brunch or other gallery functions, call 305-872-1828 or check the Facebook page.

FINAL PART OF THIS AWESOME EXHIBITION
Pt. 8 OF 8 "Visions of Cuba"

OPENED TO A PACKED CROWD  AT FLORIDA KEYS COUNCIL OF THE ARTS BUILDING (GATO CUBAN CIGAR FACTORY) 1100 SIMONTON ST. Curated by Alaen Ledesma Fernandez

The Florida Keys Council of the Arts encourages all to attend the ongoing show: "Visions of Cuba", an exhibition of contemporary Cuban Art, curated by Alaen Ledesma Fernandez. This collective exhibition represents the artwork of more than 50 prominent Cuban artists who now live in cities throughout the world.
This presents a unique opportunity for both the artists and the audience, in that the Gato Building itself is steeped in Cuban Heritage. Jose Marti gave a historic presentation during his first visit to Key West in 1891, and the building was originally a Cuban Cigar Factory. "Visions of Cuba" showcases a variety of community artists, ranging from students to professionals, and promotes the significant cultural connection between Cuba, Key West, the Gato and Artists.

The exhibit is part of the Arts Council's Art in Public Buildings program, designed to offer an opportunity for artists to exhibit their work beyond a traditional gallery space and enhance the environment of those who work and visit the Gato Building. The show will continue through April 26th, and the Gato Building is open daily, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m. daily.
This exhibit was sponsored in part by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, the State of Florida: Division of Cultural Affairs, as well as other supporters. Successful Clean Up at Boca Chica Beach

Thank you to the 37 volunteers that helped Reef Relief clean up Boca Chica Beach last weekend. We picked up over 730 lbs of marine debris in less than two hours!

A majority of the trash we found were small plastics such as bottle caps, straws, cigarette butts, and cutlery. We would not be able to clean up our near shore waters without the help of our dedicated volunteers.

If you are interested in participating in any future clean up events, please contact us at reefrelief@gmail.com or call us at 305-294-3100.

The colors and captivating characters invite you into an emotional ride that is welcomed by the mind and the heart. Simple landscapes set the stage to the value of emotional attachment that can be compared to no other. Influences from some of this century's greatest artists are hard to find in his pieces, but are drenched deep in the fabric of what puts a Napoleoni painting together

Here is a Really Interesting Feature that Contributing Editor Carol Tedesco did on Manuel Cabeza : A WWI Hero that was Killed by the KKK. He Was Honored a few Weeks Ago.

A KWPD and MCSO honor color guard stands at attention during a memorial service held at the City Cemetery on Saturday to honor World War I war hero Manuel Cabeza. Twenty-two of Cabeza's relatives from across the country joined City officials, local historians and some 50 attendees for an hour long service that, in City Commissioner Samuel Kaufman's words, served as 'a day of atonement' for the island-born man who was murdered by Ku Klux Klan members on Christmas morning of 1921 for the 'crime' of loving Angela, a woman of color whose last name still remains to be discovered.

Left to right, Key West Mayor Teri Johnston, Commissioners Clayton Lopez, Samuel Kaufman, and Gregory Davila, and Deacon Marvin Hunt stand as Wes Dudley, second from left, plays Silent Night during a memorial service held at the City Cemetery on Saturday to honor World War I war hero Manuel Cabeza.

Mayor Teri Johnston places a rose on a newly installed grave marker, underwritten by the Department of Veterans Affairs for Manuel Cabeza, which can be found in the Seventh Avenue area of the City Cemetery.

Norbert Szilagyi returns to art scene at SALT
After a long hiatus from the art world, much-beloved Key West folk artist Norbert Szilagyi will make his triumphant return to the gallery scene this month. For the month of April, SALT Gallery (830 Fleming St.) will feature a new collection of Szilagyi's vivid acrylic paintings, entitled "Folk on the Border." To celebrate Szilagyi's triumphant artistic reemergence after so many years, SALT will be hosting an opening reception at the gallery from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 4.
As a child, Szilagyi immigrated to the U.S. with his family after escaping their native Hungary during a revolution attempt. He grew up in Ohio, served in the U.S. Navy and subsequently returned to Ohio to attend Kent State University.
In 1987, Szilagyi found his way to Key West and settled here to start creating art, where he became a disruptive force in the art scene in more ways than one. Driven by the lack of art in public places in Key West, Szilagyi took it upon himself to paint a city bus bench in his typical colorful style. To thank him for his service, the city issued him a police citation for vandalism, which was promptly rescinded and followed up with a request to paint more benches.

BVMP Dance + Technique class includes ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, composition, dance history and more, with two levels of class offered to these students, free of cost.

Dance Key West presents fourth ReMARCable Dance Project at The Studios of Key West on April 6
Dance Key West, the non-for-profit dance company founded and directed by Key West performer Kyla Piscopink in 2008, presents a very special afternoon of dance on April 6 at 4:00pm at The Studios of Key West with the fourth installation of The ReMARCable Dance Project, entitled "Heroes," featuring inspiring stories of unlikely heroes narrated by Steve Burns from Blue's Clues, clients from MARC-Monroe Association for ReMARCable Citizens, a Key West non-profit serving adults with who have developmental disabilities, and Dance Key West.
"The ReMARCable Dance Project helps MARC clients improve coordination, participate in mild physical activity, and provide an opportunity for socialization while learning the art of dance," says Piscopink. "They end up guiding us just as much -if not more- as we guide them, offering everyone involved palpable moments of awe where their uninhibited joy and willingness to go deep reminds us what it is really all for. It's a win-win for all involved."
Outreach programs are integral to Dance Key West's development as both dancers and community members, says Piscopink, and they are committed to sharing the joy of movement by guiding members of the island's  underserved populations to discover and express their own creativity and physicality through dance and dance-making, specifically those who may not typically be afforded opportunities to discover the art of dance.
Other outreach programming includes weekly dance and technique classes free of charge for students of the Bahama Village Music Program and the launch of Autism Movement Therapy- a movement class that supports children on the autism spectrum.
Dance Key West recently launched a new partnership with Key West Theater and are housed in the theater's second-floor studio space, where they rehearse and offer innovative dance workshops developed to make movement accessible and fun for all levels of experience.
For more information about the company or its programs and performances or to make a tax-deductible donation, visit DanceKeyWest.org or email Kyla at dancekw@gmail.com.

ENCORE FEATURE + New One to Follow
Sheriff's Office receives 16th consecutive perfect financial audit

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay is pleased to announce the Sheriff's Office has received its 16th consecutive perfect audit.

A perfect audit means financial auditors did not find any irregularities, questionable spending or anything out of the norm for an accredited law enforcement agency. The audit is performed every year by independent auditors with no ties to the Sheriff's Office to ensure public trust between the agency and taxpayers.

"I am happy to report our latest perfect audit, but frankly, I'm not surprised," said Sheriff Ramsay. "Everyone in the Sheriff's Office Finance Division knows how important transparency is to me and this agency. Every year, I expect excellence and they never cease to deliver. And though I'm not surprised, I remain grateful for their continued efforts every year. I have made it clear to everyone in the agency that transparency is of the utmost importance in terms of keeping the public trust and that means financial transparency as well."

The Sheriff's Office is Triple Crown Award winner regarding its accreditation status. The Triple Crown Award is given to Sheriff's Offices which achieve simultaneous accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of the American Correctional Association, The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. Financial excellence is required in keeping such accreditation status.

Sue Harrison has been sending us Great Material Year round from the MCSO; She tells Us :
As a MARC Board member, Sheriff Ramsay attended The ReMARCable Mattheessen's Ice Cream and Fresh Fruit Social on Saturday.  Thanks to KWPD Police Chief Sean Brandenburg and County Commissioner Heather Carruthers for bringing their families and supporting the Marc House.

This website was created to make easier to event goers to find times and dates. Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. Another selling point is that the calendar of events will provide useful information that can be used for scheduling. Any company who is having a special event can look at the global calendar and avoid clashing times/dates with other organizations. This also allows them to attract more people to their events by scheduling their own events when other organizations aren't scheduled.

Mystery Fest Key West Announces 2019 Whodunit Mystery Writing Competition-Entry Deadline is April 15
Key West, Florida Keys -- Do you have a finished, but unpublished, mystery genre manuscript? Mystery Fest Key West has announced a call for entries for the 2019 Whodunit Mystery Writing Competition. The winner will claim a book-publishing contract with Absolutely Amazing eBooks, free Mystery Fest Key West 2019 registration, airfare, hotel accommodations for two nights and a Whodunit Award trophy to be presented at the 6th Annual Mystery Fest Key West, set for June 28-30 in Key West, Florida.
Sponsored by Absolutely Amazing eBooks, candidates wishing to compete are invited to submit the first three pages (maximum 750 words) of a finished, but unpublished manuscript to whodunitaward@mysteryfestkeywest.com

no later than April 15, 2019. There is no fee to enter, finalists will be notified by May 1, and will have until May 10 to submit full manuscripts.
"Why just the first three pages? That criterion is a nod to late author Jeremiah Healy, a terrific mystery writer and great judge of mysteries," said Fest co-founder Shirrel Rhoades. "Healy often said a book either captures a reader in the first three pages...or it doesn't. The competition judges agreed with that assessment, and decided to use it as a yardstick for the competition."
Contest judges for 2019 are Dr. Toby Armour, whose credits include the murder mystery book "Blood Tells" and play, "Is This 24 Lily Pond Lane?"; Carol Lazar, an author, columnist, photojournalist and former senior editor for South Africa's Independent Newspapers; Captain Reef Perkins, author of "Sex, Salvage and Secrets," Screwed, Blu'd and Tattooed," and the mystery novel "Deep Air"; Robin Robinson, an author, syndicated newspaper columnist, educator and horticulturist; and Rhoades, an author, film critic, media consultant and publisher of Absolutely Amazing eBooks.
The 2019 Mystery Fest Key West, featuring Keynote Speaker Jeffery Deaver by popular demand, will include multiple presentations, panel discussions and social events at landmark Key West locations where attendees mingle with acclaimed mystery, crime fiction and true crime writers.
Whodunit Writing Competition guidelines and submission details, complete schedule of Mystery Fest Key West events and a Fest registration form are all available at  WWW.MYSTERYFESTKEYWEST.COM

Underwater: Two One-Act plays by Tennessee Williams

Two performances: March 31 and April 1, 7:30pm
Directed by Stephen Kitsakos
Continuing to present lesser known works by the great American playwright, Key West Art & Historical Society presents the rarely performed comedy Lifeboat Drill and steamy threesome Kingdom of Earth - two intriguing plays with characters trapped, both physically and metaphorically, by rising waters. Starring Alaina Albertson, Michael Catlege, Kitty Clements, Arthur Crocker and Jeffrey Johnson.
Lifeboat Drill, penned in 1979 and published in 1981, was one of the last plays to premiere in Williams's lifetime. It concerns an elderly married couple, who occupy a stateroom on the Queen Elizabeth II crossing from Cherbourg to New York. Unhappily married, they bicker fiercely and when they discover that they have been deliberately prevented from attending a lifeboat drill by two mischievous stewards, decide to rehearse their own "drill" all by themselves. Mayhem and personal turbulence ensure. It is a "short, grotesque comedy that explores the panic, isolation, sense of abandonment and confusion that accompany old age." Set adrift in their stateroom, their marriage becomes a metaphor of the disaster of a sinking ship.
The Kingdom of Earth is a one-act play that was published in Esquire Magazine in 1967 and based on a short story Williams wrote in 1942. It bears an ominous epigraph from the Old Testament concerning the Great Flood. It tells the story of a strapping young man named Chicken, living in a Mississippi Delta farmhouse, and preparing for a flood from the rising river when he is unexpectedly visited by his sickly half-brother, Lot, and his newlywed of one-day, Myrtle, a woman whose sexual desire and personal fulfillment force her to make a choice about survival as flood waters approach as the three characters are forced to evacuate. The play was eventually expanded into a full-length play and opened on Broadway in 1968 at The Seven Descents of Myrtle.
Kitty Clements & Jeff Johnson Starring in Kingdom of Earth
Both The Kingdom of Earth and Lifeboat Drill encounter their themes in the idea of the unexpected rising of water: not only what lies beneath, but also what lies ahead. The performances will be staged at The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton Street, Key West, FL 33040

Presented in part by the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, Florida Keys Council of the Arts, Neal Ruchman & Melissa Jean McDaniel, and Bert Whitt.

Call for Artists for the Key West Art & Historical Society Fourth Annual Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade
Key West Art & Historical Society invites artists, builders, and assemblers to put their creative and engineering genius to play and on display for the Fourth Annual Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade (think art with parts that move), set to kick off at the Custom House Museum in Key West, Saturday, May 4 at 12:00pm. Small and simple or elegantly engineered, teams of any number and age can enter this pedaled or pushed sculpture parade.Human-powered Kinetic Sculptures and Art Bikes can be simple, whimsical, futuristic, or fantastical-the only requirement is that they are physically moved by you (and/or a teammate(s)). Recycling is highly encouraged, wit and humor loudly applauded. Cash prizes will be awarded in multiple categories, including a youth/school category.
Inspired by and named for the late Keys artist Stanley Papio, a humorous rebel metal-artist who explored the value of recycled materials long before it was hip to be rusty, a full weekend of kinetic revelry kicks off Friday, May 3 and runs through Sunday, May 5.
Registration is $25 for kinetic sculpture floats and $15 for art bikes, with registration fees waived for Society members. Registration deadline is WHEN for kinetic sculpture floats and WHEN for art bike entries. For registration information and guidelines and a full event schedule, visit papiokineticparade.com.   The Papio Kinetic Sculpture Parade is supported in part by the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, The Helmerich Trust, and the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. Your Museums.  Your Community.  It takes an Island.
"Barefoot" Stanley Papio was a man whose ingenuity and spirit sparked our islands more than thirty years ago with his with a clever sense of satire, tenacity, and innovation, creating recycled metal sculptures that gained him attention and respect as one of the Florida Keys' pioneering folk artists.  He arrived in Key Largo in 1949, when the upper Keys were little more than an isolated stretch of Highway U.S. 1, and lived there contentedly for many years using his welding skills acquired in the U.S. Army during World War II for both commercial and creative purposes. Over time, his yard, piled high with old cars, washing machines, and other metal appliances surrounded by a welded bed spring fence, became a treasure trove of recyclable materials that he would transform into art.
Unfortunately, as the area developed and the space between he and his neighbors diminished, what he saw as potential art, others simply called junk.
"I don't have a junkyard," Papio once said. "That's all my future works out there, but you can't tell that to people with nothing in their heads.  Even when I'm done with something, they think it's just garbage because it's made out of junk."
Despite disagreeable neighbors and the mounting pressure they imposed (which included his being jailed six  times for zoning violations), his innovative and rebellious spirit continued to evolve; Papio went on to create "satirical metal sculptures that depicted his neighbors, naysayers, and people he considered to be 'environmental rapists,'" says Key West Art & Historical Society Curator Cori Convertito.  Due to space Constraints this rather long yet extremely informative Press Release had to be edited ; perhaps their website has the missing info..

CONNECTIONS PROJECT

As well as being connected by the iconic Overseas Highway, the 125-mile-long Florida Keys island chain also is connected by a vibrant community of artists. From now through May 3, art lovers can view a travelling 24-foot mural featuring the work of close to 400 creative spirits during a series of exhibitions throughout the Keys. "The Connections Project: A Mosaic of the Keys" comprises nearly 400 individual canvases measuring 6 inches square that were provided to artists and arts-minded residents.
Their resultant works - produced in mediums ranging from oils and watercolor to photography, mixed media and quilting - showcase subjects including birds and sea life, palms and waterfront scenes, abstract visions and local landmarks.
"The mural's 'road show' tour from Key Largo to Key West celebrates the longstanding connections between the communities of the Keys," said Elizabeth Young, executive director of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, which spearheaded the project.

Art lovers can make a $50 donation for one individual canvas or a $125 donation for three at any reception or online at keysarts.com. Each donor will receive a randomly selected, unique piece of the mosaic by mail with an artist statement sharing their inspiration. Proceeds from the Connections Project benefit local artists and arts organizations through arts council grants. Florida Keys Community College continues its VIP Series with "Invisible Island: Key West and the K.K.K."  The presentation, led by Arlo Haskell, award-winning author and historian, is on Wednesday, April 3 at 7 p.m. in the Tennessee Williams Theatre on the Key West Campus.
During the 1920s, the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan became one of America's fastest growing social movements and a potent political force. In Key West, KKK members commanded the police department, the sheriff's office, the fire department, and the criminal courts. On the island where Cuban patriot José Martí had famously said "there are no races," Key West's representative to the state legislature now reigned as Grand Dragon of the Florida Klan, overseeing more than 100 outposts of the so-called Invisible Empire from his Eaton Street headquarters. Then, almost as quickly as it had emerged, the Klan fell into disarray, leaving a toxic legacy.
Haskell's talk will explore his efforts to unmask the century-old activities of the Klan of the Keys and uncover the complicated truth behind our "one human family."
Haskell is an award-winning author, historian, literary organizer, and publisher. He is executive director of the Key West Literary Seminar, publisher of Sand Paper Press, and author of The Jews of Key West: Smugglers, Cigar Makers, and Revolutionaries, which received the Florida Book Award's Gold Medal for Florida Nonfiction.
The acronym in FKCC's VIP Series stands for "visions, ideas, and perspectives;" the series invites the community to learn from speakers of local, regional, and national prominence.  Tickets are $5 at the door.  Admission is free for students at FKCC and Monroe County schools. For more information, call FKCC at 305-296-9081 or visit www.fkcc.edu.
