Twain, aka Samuel Clemens, had a great fondness for canines. In fact, dogs inspired his work. One of Twain’s rare attempts at poetry took on the subject of his recently deceased dog named Burns: “She lived a quiet harmless life in Hartford far from madding strife.”
Twain used dogs as his muse up until the end. Weeks before he died, Twain wrote about approaching heaven’s gate: “Leave your dog outside. Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.” This is not to say that Twain didn't like cats. He once wrote about felines: “The only creature in heaven or earth or anywhere that don’t have to obey somebody or other, including the angels.”
It was August 13th, 1961. This image captures an East German soldier helping a child cross the newly erected Berlin Wall, which was built on that day. As chaos erupted, people began fleeing and this small boy got left behind. Judging by the fearful look on this soldier's face, all holy hell must of let loose once the wall started going up. The soldier still helped the boy get passed the barbwire, despite being given orders by the East German government not to let anyone pass. It's been reported that this solider was later reprimanded by a superior officer. Descriptions for the photo have the eerie message: “No one knows what became of him.”

What Have I done?
A large part of parenthood is learning new ways to handle the exhaustion. While as humans we can hire nannies or get a babysitter for a night, our feline friends don't have the same privilege. Since those in the animal kingdom can't just leave their kids with a sitter while they meet up with their friends for a drink, they have to resort to other ways to work through their tiredness. Perhaps this tired mom of several kittens is focusing on what life was like before motherhood. Back when her life was carefree and naps were plentiful. Compared to what her life has become, surely she looks back at that time as the glory days. Surely the sight of her beautiful furry babies will remind her of the joys of motherhood though!

Part 3
WWW.BRAKEFORIT.COM This Company Sponsored a Feature of 30 Photos from Cars that are : RESTOMOD . Here are just 6 Photos ; the remaining 25 Photos will be in the September 14 and 21st. Issues.

If you’re into vintage-looking cars, but you still want all of the power and flourishes of modern design, look no further than “restomodding.” The term “restomod” is just the combination of restoration and modification. People take old cars and deck them out with all of the latest and greatest gadgets in the automotive industry.
This is the best way to combine classic style and modern performance. They may have had the aesthetics down pat in the past, but modern-age cars can’t be beat when it comes to mechanics.

The Key West COVID-19 Spring of 2020
A fundraising photography coffee table book
The Anne McKee Artist Fund of the Florida Keys is proud to announce that 10 of our previous grant recipients and two current board members are participating in this fundraising project for Sister Season Fund, Inc.

Contributing photographers/previous grant recipients: Lynne Bentley-Kemp, Larry Blackburn, Ralph DePalma,  Todd Andrew Feit, Tony Gregory, C.J. Groth, Mark Hedden, Martha Hubbard, Rob O’Neal, Carol Tedesco, and Sharon Wells. Board Members: Roberta DePiero and Eric Grahl.
The Awesome Foundation Key West chapter recently presented a $1000.00 grant to Roberta DePiero and Carol Tedesco to support publishing of a limited edition commemorative photo-book of images shot by 26 area photographers during the “COVID-19 Spring,” taken when the Keys underwent an unprecedented months-long shutdown. Which is why all proceeds from the sales of this book go to Key West’s Sister Season Fund, which is dedicated to helping all of the many people working in tourist related industries, including entertainment, hospitality, lodging, and some retail and guest services.

With a forward written by local arts advocate Rosi Ware, the book is anticipated to be in print and available some time in September. Anyone wishing to contribute to the printing cost and/or wishing to place advance orders, please contact Roberta DePiero at roberta@keywestplaybills.com.

All of the artists featured in this book gave their work for free, to help their fellow community members be able to stay in our small piece of Paradise – “One Human Family” Indeed!

For some reason, this old rusty tie up for big ships ( I think it is called a dolphin) caught my eye against the closed umbrellas at Margaritaville.

This figurehead is carved in the likeness of Jenny Find - "The most Popular woman in the world at this moment--perhaps the most popular that there ever was" according to the New York Herald, Sept 6, 1850. You'll have to read the sign as the Key West Shipwreck Museum to find out more!

I kept thinking this was a REAL guy sitting there.... He also has a new coat of paint. Looks dashing, don't you think?

42 Unbelievable Retro Photos
Written by Harmon Leon
Part Two; Part one in the Sept 7 Issue

A party pooper picketing Spring break at Daytona Beach in the 1980s. Spring break in Daytona Beach, during the 1980s, was a wild time. That's why it was almost essential to have someone inform college students of the day that they were sinners and heading to hell. Spring Break has always been know as a debauch right of passage. And Daytona Beach has always been Ground Zero for this seasonal hedonism. This annual event began back in the 1930s when schools and universities became to take an academic vacation period. The first documented excursion was in 1935, when a swimming coach at Colgate University brought his team to Ft. Lauderdale during spring break to train. And what is the natural thing students like to do when they are on break from school? The answer: PARTY!
On August 5, 1966, marks the groundbreaking for the construction of the World Trade Center. When the WTC twin towers were completed, the total costs to the Port Authority was $900 million. The first tenants started moving into the North Tower on December 15, 1970. The South Tower started accepting occupants on January 1972. It wasn't until 1979, when the World Trade Center was completely sold out. The Twin Towers were built on a site in Manhattan called, Radio Row. It was a warehouse district that consisted of several blocks of electronics stores - and was said to be the origin of the electronic component distribution business. Controversy erupted when this area was torn down to make way for the World Trade Center. And you know the rest about bad karma..
Who can forget Cindy Morgan in the role of Lacey Underall in the 1980 film comedy, Caddyshack? She played the femme fatale to Chevy Chase's Ty Webb. Morgan said that the oil massage scene with Chase was totally improvised. When she exclaimed "You're crazy!" - that was her genuine reaction to Chase's oiling antics. But there was life outside of Caddyshack for Morgan. She got her start as a TV weather woman and then began modeling at auto shows. This led her to become the Irish Spring girl in 1978. Wilson also appeared in the 1982 movie, Tron, which was the first computer-generated film.

Heather Thomas is an actress best known for her role of Jody Banks on the TV series, The Fall Guy. The show starred Lee Majors and ran on ABC from 1981 to 1986. Thomas first TV gig was on an NBC Saturday morning show called: Talking with a Giant. She was 14-years old at the time and was one of the hosts. The premise was, she'd interviewed celebrities. Just before landing on the Fall Guy - Thomas costarred in the 1982 movie, Zapped. The movie not only featured Scott Baio but also Willie Ames - as high school students with telekinetic powers. Here's a photo of Thomas from a wet appearance on Battle of the Network Stars from back in 1983. She looks pensive about the water.
What would 1970s women-in-prison and blaxploitation films be without the queen of the genre, Pam Grier? Her roles in such movies as The Big Bird Cage, Coffy, Foxy Brown, and Sheba, Baby - led to her starring in Quentin Tarantino's 1997 film, Jackie Brown. The movie was a nod to the genre. Grier, who grew up in Denver, got her big break after she moved to Los Angeles in 1967 and took a job as a receptionist at American International Pictures. It was from this gig where she was discovered by director Jack Hill - who cast Grier in her first women-in-prison film, The Big Doll House.
How many hipsters in Williamsburg would trade their curly mustaches for a bike like this? Benjamin Bowden created the prototype of the 'Bowden Spacelander' back in 1946. But strangely, it didn't go into production until 1960. Only 522 of these two-wheeled-beauties were manufactured. It sold for a retail price of $89.50 - in 1960 dollars. Today, a Bowden Spacelander in mint condition would cost you somewhere around the range of $15,000.
According to the Brooklyn Museum website:
"The Spacelander is a marvel of postwar biomorphic design. Its curving lines and amoeba-like voids represent the mutation of the prewar streamlined style into a new expression based on organic, rather than machine-made, forms."
The name Buffalo Bill Cody goes hand-in-hand with myths about the old West. But did you know that this all-American hero was actually part Canadian? Yes, his father was born and raised near the city of Mississauga in Ontario - and Cody spent some time living there as a youth. Buffalo Bill became a Pony Express rider by the age of 14 and served on the Union side of the Civil War from 1863 to 1865. He also served as a civilian scout for the US Army during the Indian Wars and receive the Medal of Honor in 1872. As Buffalo Bill's legend began to spread he started performing in Buffalo Bill's Wild West. In 1883, the Wild West show began to tour not only in the U.S., but also in Britain and around Europe. I can easily see Jeff Bridges playing Buffalo Bill in the film adaptation.

Dear Subscribers and Friends of Impromptu Classical Concerts,

Our 2021 season is approaching, and as the Impromptu Board seeks the proper response to the Covid19 epidemic, we are reaching out to those closest to us to ask your opinion about the upcoming season. We, of course, want very much to have the wonderful performers we have scheduled to join us, but we recognize that our season may simply be impossible. Among other concerns, there would be no intermissions. The health and safety of all concerned is our top priority.

We value your opinion on this, and we hope you will take the time to complete the short survey at the link which follows.

Thank you very much for your support and your help in this very difficult time!

As well as human visitors who come to the Florida Keys for rest and renewal, marine creatures in need come calling, too. Some arrive with health problems, while others are injured, orphaned or lost.
Throughout the island chain, ailing sea turtles, manatees, dolphins and whales encounter a willing and dedicated group of professionals and volunteers ready to lend a helping hand. Even during the global coronavirus crisis, the Keys' nature and wildlife rehabilitation centers have continued rescuing and rehabilitating wild creatures requiring care.
In recent months, a number of rehabilitated turtles and manatees have been released back into their ocean home off the Keys — including one rare turtle that's a contestant in an international ocean-going "race."

Montana Wandering -- Dink Tribute Road Trip

Bill and Linda Write "Yesterday we fired up the Como Se-Llama (48’ Chevy) and The Shadow (49’ Chrysler) for a Dink Tribute Road Trip to the Livingston Valley Lodge & Grill where we celebrated Ken & Mike’s Birthdays. All went well till The Shadow’s headlights quit on the way home and we had to return in the dark navigating with a flashlight. Another great memory to add to the many Dink has given all of us.

WE CONTINUE PART 6 OF 6 "ANIMAL MOMS & ANIMAL RARE TRAITS"
This adorable kitty's name is Sam, and as you can see from his photo, he has quite a unique look. Not only do his eyebrows give him a permanently puzzled expression, but they've earned him internet fame as well. Born in 2012, Sam has more than 237,000 Instagram followers and nearly half a million fans on his Facebook page, Sam Has Eyebrows. According to his profile, Sam loves tomatoes and hiding from his humans. While he's known for having one of the most innocent faces in the world, he tends to get into a bit of mischief from time to time. But with those eyebrows, how could his humans ever get upset? Imagine he trashes the room and then he looks at you with those eyes. You probably couldn't help but laugh!
Freckly Face
There's nothing more adorable than a child's sun-kissed cheeks. There's something child-like and playful about freckles that most animals can't pull off. This dog, however, certainly looks like ginger if I've ever seen one! You can't look into his eyes without falling in love. A combination of a Pitbull and an American Cattle Dog, he gets his reddish spots from the latter of the two. His freckled body downplays his toned physique, making him less intimidating than most Pitbull mixes. How could anyone look into those adorable eyes and not want to give them a scratch?
That Smile
As parents, the first time our child flashes a smile is one of the most memorable moments of our lives. Who knew something as basic as a tiny grin could melt our hearts and change our lives forever? When this little guy was found on the street, he was taken to a local animal shelter where he melted the hearts of all who met him. It's not quite clear if he was born with a beaming smile or a conveniently placed mustache, but there's no doubt that this puppy will have no trouble finding a home. How could anyone resist? Between his wagging tail, brisk stance, and puppy dog eyes, this pup takes adorable to a whole new level. There's no doubt he's charming everyone he meets to this day.
An Underwater Beauty
Parents love their kids unconditionally, despite any differences. In the animal kingdom, differences are celebrated and often cherished. Contrary to how it appears, this turtle is not an albino but leucistic. Leucism is a condition where animals sometimes experience in which a limited amount of pigmentation is lost. It causes them to have a variety of colors and patterns in their fur, shell, and skin. Unlike those who suffer from albinism, leucism doesn't cause a lack of pigment in the eyes. Coming across an animal in the wild with this condition is rare, and often considered good luck.
Cookies And Cream
As parents, we all think our children are just perfect the way they are. While no one is perfect, this pup certainly comes close! This cookies and cream looking puppy is a "Dapple Doxie," - a nickname dog lovers use to describe spotted Dachshunds. More than just adorable, he's photogenic as well!
This dog's beautifully patterned fur may come from either his mom or dad, as at least one parent must be spotted in order for the gene to be passed on. Only a cold-hearted individual could ignore this adorable pup's longing expression and fluffy ears. He deserves all of the pets and cuddles in the world!
Grumpy Cat
Kids tend to have their moments when they're angry and frustrated over seemingly nothing. Our friends in the animal kingdom are no different! While it's all in his unique facial hair, this kitty gives Grumpy Cat a run for his money. It makes you wonder how his fur parents could ever know when he's happy, or even satisfied. With an upturned mustache that would make most human men envious, this cat comes off as displeased with just about everything. Despite the love, affection, food, and shelter he receives from his owners, there's just no pleasing him! We may think it's hilarious, but any parent knows that laughing at a grumpy child will only make things worse.

Sealing A Kiss
Just like humans, animals also show affection to their loved ones with a kiss. Take these sea lions for example. This new momma adores her newborn and shows her affection without any reservations. While to us it's simply adorable, this sea lion is demonstrating the love she has for her pup by kissing her square on the mouth. Every parent can agree that the first time they laid eyes on their child they couldn't resist giving them a ton of hugs and kisses. This just happens to be how most animals react towards a loved one and is universal within the animal kingdom. According to Winnie the Pooh Bear, sometimes the smallest things take the most space in our hearts!

Cool door

So when Duval Street and a couple side streets were being repaved this past May and June, looks like a dog got into the hot asphalt and left his prints all along one stretch of sidewalk.. Wonder how long these will be there. And where were his owner's footprints?

Found on a light post. Unique sticker for sure.

Through a fence, I spotted this rooster....

his has a name like a brassa orchid. There must have been about 25 blooms on this plant wrapped around a tree.

I have my eyes on you...

LIVESTREAM CONCERT | Huifang Chen and Katarina Nazarova, violin
Join SFSO violinists Huifang Chen and Katarina Nazarova for an inspiring evening of music as they make their duet debut on the Intermission Music Series.

About South Florida Symphony Orchestra
South Florida Symphony Orchestra, founded by Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso 23 years ago, provides exciting and enriching cultural experiences through Masterworks concerts with internationally renowned guest soloists in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Key West. Guided by the belief that music is pivotal to community engagement, SFSO also brings vibrancy and strengthens public commitment to the arts through its transformative outreach and educational programming, including Symphony in the Schools for culturally underserved students.

After impressive career successes, Maestra Alfonso returned “home” to Key West, Florida, in 1997 to make a dream come true: bringing orchestral music, with all its associated educational and cultural benefits, to the southernmost island in the continental United States. In late 1998, with huge community support, the Key West Symphony made its debut. Subsequently renamed, the South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) is the only professional orchestra that performs full seasons in Key West, Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Award-winning Maestra Alfonso has established herself as a dynamic musical force. She is one of the few female conductors in the world. Her creativity has established SFSO as a leader in innovative collaborations, which are evolving the classical music art form and attracting new audiences.

The Key West Art Center is happy to have Lothar Speer return as our figure drawing instructor, this time on Zoom as our inaugural virtual art instructor. Lothar studied at The National Academy of The Fine Arts, Vienna, where he received The Johannes Fueger Medal, a European distinction in the field of figure drawing. He received his BFA from Chicago's Loyola University and his MFA from Philadelphia's Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts. His work was shown internationally as well as in the Rotunda of the Capitol Building in Washington and the Governors' Offices of Illinois and Pennsylvania.

His teaching is based on the classical drawing curriculum of The French Academy in Paris from the 19th century which aims at visual acuity and a methodical drawing process that delivers results. It promotes a simple and powerful way of constructing a drawing by measuring, applying angles, negative and positive shapes, and the proportionality of shapes, while expressing the rhythm, weight and flow of form. Although this is not an anatomy course per se, as a former instructor of Anatomy for Artists, Lothar will be glad to share his anatomical knowledge of the human figure when the occasion arises.

This workshop is an introduction to this powerful tradition for artists of all levels. Lothar has been teaching the figure for over three decades and delights in adjusting his feedback to each student's level and needs. He considers figure drawing the royal road to learning how to draw anything. The principles learned here are universal and can be applied to any subject matter and develop skill which is the prerequisite for powerful personal artistic expression.

HERE IS A LIST OF THEIR CO-FOUNDERS AND WRITERS

One of the Popular Groovy History Editors Lyra Radford

Lyra spends her days exploring all shades of history. In her writing, she covers topics ranging from the 'groovy' to the downright strange. She enjoys books, movies, and strong coffee. She also fancies herself the world's greatest air hockey player. She learned the ins and outs of writing and producing film/television at Palm Beach State and The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. She is currently enrolled at Arizona State University studying psychology and writing. Her work has been featured by some of the most prolific sites on the web and she is the author of the travel guide "Two-Days Exploring Haunted Key West".

ONE OF THE POPULAR GROOVY HISTORY EDITORS JACOB SHELTON
Jacob Shelton is a Los Angeles based writer. For some reason this was the most difficult thing he’s written all day, and here’s the kicker – his girlfriend wrote the funny part of that last sentence. As for the rest of the bio? That’s pure Jacob, baby. He’s obsessed with the ways in which singular, transgressive acts have shaped the broader strokes of history, and he believes in alternate dimensions, which means that he’s great at a dinner party. When he’s not writing about culture, pop or otherwise, he’s adding to his found photograph collection and eavesdropping on strangers in public.

Rebeka Knott (3rd Photo Down) is another one of their Frquent Writers
Writer of this Feature and many other GROOVY HISTORY Features
Rebeka grew up in the 1960’s & 1970’s and has always subscribed to the theory that a positive attitude will take you far! She is a wife and mother of 3 with a fun-loving spirit, believing that family and relationships are invaluable.

Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden
Awarded Level II Accreditation by ArbNet Accreditation Program

KEY WEST, Florida Keys, FL, September, 2020 – The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden has been awarded a Level II Accreditation by The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and The Morton Arboretum, for achieving particular standards of professional practices deemed important for arboreta and botanic gardens. The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program is the only global initiative to officially recognize arboreta at various levels of development, capacity, and professionalism. The Key West Tropical Forest is also now recognized as an accredited arboretum in the Morton Register of Arboreta, a database of the world’s gardens dedicated to woody plants.

Upon learning of the award, Mary Chandler, a member of the Garden’s Collection Committee said, “The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden is honored to take a place in ArbNet’s accreditation program. Our conservation of Florida Keys and West Indies trees is strengthened by this association with the global community”.

Established in 1936, the 15-acre Garden showcases the historical significance of flora that are native to South Florida, Cuba and the Caribbean and emphasizes the cultivation of threatened and endangered species of the Florida Keys. As one of the world’s few “hot spots” it encourages the study of this unique collection and provides educational programs for all age groups including a Living Lab for grade school students and a Speaker Series and Docent Guided Tours for adults. The Garden showcases a rare Cuban Palm Exhibit, three fresh water ponds and includes a collection of 85-year old Legacy Trees planted when the Garden was created. Research into endangered plants has been partially funded through the State of Florida “Endangered Plant Advisory Council” resulting in a Demonstration Cactus Barren and a Nursery with over 1,500 plants of 150 different species. The Nursery provides plants for the community and diversity outplanting in the Keys.

ArbNet is an interactive, collaborative, international community of arboreta. ArbNet facilitates the sharing of knowledge, experience and other resources to help arboreta meet their institutional goals. The accreditation program, sponsored and coordinated by The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois in cooperation with American Public Gardens Association and Botanic Gardens Conservation International, is the only global initiative to officially recognize arboreta based on a set of professional standards. More information is available at www.arbnet.org.

MONROE COUNTY FIRE RESCUE ATTENDS ANNUAL REQUIRED AIRCRAFT FIRE RESCUE DRILLS.
MONROE COUNTY, FL – Monroe County Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) firefighters from Key West International Airport recently attended the annual Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-required training at the Fire Academy of the South in Jacksonville, Fla. Fire Academy of the South is the only FAA-approved training facility in Florida. It is a national standard that any firefighter who is stationed at a commercial airport is required to participate in live aircraft fire drills and scenarios each year. Photo by Monroe County Fire Rescue. Key West International Airport firefighters David Hannert, Michael Bland, and Sergio Tellez joined Battalion Chief Cab Bentley and Captain Richard Cletta at the annual required training to participate in live aircraft fire drills.

Dengue can present as a severe flu-like illness with severe muscle aches and pain, fever and sometimes a rash. Usually, there are no respiratory symptoms. Symptoms of Dengue will appear within 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Dengue fever is not contagious but is transmitted by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito.
The emergence of these Dengue cases reinforces the importance for the public to prevent insect bites and to take basic precautions to help limit exposure. These measures include intact windows and screens and the use of air conditioning, keeping the area around your residence free from containers that collect water, wearing protective clothing and the appropriate use of insect repellents.
