Summer in the Sanger SALLY BINARD The Studios is opening the Sanger Gallery to a select artist for the slower summer season. The Summer Sanger artist has access to a space where they can spread out, step back to look at their work and have several projects laid out at once.
Sally Binard is a mixed-media artist of Haitian and Belgian heritage. Early, continuous exposure to the two different styles of art from each country provided an eclectic and exciting idea of what art was and could be. This dichotomy has been a notable influence on her work.
Visit Sally during open hours at The Studios! Tuesday-Friday, 10am-4pm August & September

NEW ARTICLE In a recent awards ceremony hosted by the Grand Key Resort, Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg recognizing the accomplishment of several of our members for the first half of 2023. Among them were a number of Lifesaving Awards, including recognition to Officer Esteban Andrade and Dispatcher Shay Scott. On February 4th, Officer Andrade responded to a call of a man who was unconscious and not breathing. The officer arrived to discover the address for the call was incorrect, so he sprinted four blocks to get to the patient. Officer Andrade was met with a distraught woman on the porch, and inside, a distraught man was attempting to perform CPR under the instruction of Dispatcher Shay Scott. Officer Andrade took over chest compressions while obtaining information from the family members inside. After a set of 30 compressions, the patient began breathing. Fire Rescue arrived on scene and transported the victim. “Officer Andrade maintained an extremely calm demeanor,” said Chief Brandenburg, “instilling confidence, and support to the family members while performing these life-saving actions. Dispatcher Shay Scott was instrumental in helping family members with CPR while officers were on the way.” |

THIS HAPPENED LAST MONTH Mayor Teri Johnston and the Key West City Commission commended the Florida Small Business Development Center (FSBDC) at Florida International University for its recent national recognition. The Center started working with small businesses in the Keys in 2018. The team of highly experienced consultants provides assistance and training to entrepreneurs and business owners in the City of Key West and Monroe County to help them start, grow, and succeed. FSBDC at FIU work one-on-one with small businesses providing startup assistance, access to capital, marketing, financial management, government contracting, human resources and business strategy advising. The Center has delivered more than 2,215 hours of consulting to 223 Key West small businesses, resulting in business owners securing over $18.4 million in capital, securing $7.3 million in government contracts, increasing sales by $8.6 million, impacting 1,548 jobs, and launching 13 new businesses. In April, the U.S. Small Business Administration announced SBDC at FIU as the winner of the 2023 Small Business Development Center Excellence and Innovation Award, which recognizes the country’s top small business center. Regional Director Brian Van Hook accepted the honor with consultants Nancy Hull, Bonnie Barns, and Julie Brown. They were joined on the dais by Nick Formico, owner of Key West Marine Hardware who is the Center’s Keys Client of the Year. “We talk about numbers on a page but its actually all about the business owners,” said Van Hook. “Nick here was our Client of the Year. And that’s what we’re all about, helping local business owners.”

THIS HAPPENED LAST MONTH Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission, during the July commission meeting, declared July 13th as Key West Legal Rum Day, honoring the 10-year anniversary of the local distillery and its contribution to the community. Key West Legal Rum was the first license ever issued in Monroe County to "legally" make alcohol in 2013 by Paul Menta and Tony Mantia. The rum is a handmade product made in Key West and exported all over the United States. The barrels are salt cured in the ocean, so it has a flavor only found in Key West. Over the years, the local company has been in the forefront of community service. "When the community needs help, Key West Legal Rum is there," reads the proclamation. "Be it a hurricane, pandemic, or any issue, they use the proceeds from the product to assist the community. This is the only way we can say thank you for the support given to us by always being there for the community."
In the photo: Commission Mary Lou Hoover, Shannon Killeen, Yara Gabriela Mila, Commissioner Lissette Carey, Paul Menta, Crystal Menta, Mayor Teri Johnston, Laurie Heusinger, John Petro, Wendy Maxon, Commissioner Clayton Lopez, Wladimir Paternina, Joseph Nelson, and Commissioner Billy Wardlow. In attendance via Zoom (not picture): Vice Mayor Sam Kaufman.

GRANTS Media Contact: Leah Stockton, Keys Area President Leah.Stockton@UWCollierKeys.org 305-735-1929 For Immediate Release: September 1, 2023 UWCK Marine Science Education Grants Nearing Deadline Expanding Educational Opportunities to Create the Next Generation of Reef Stewards Florida Keys — The United Way of Collier and the Keys has opened the annual UWCK Marine Science Education Grant application process for educators focused on expanding marine science and conservation opportunities for Florida Keys students. Over the last two years, this program has awarded more than $55,000, providing unforgettable experiences to over 10,000 students, including in-classroom visits by marine scientists and field trips to the Everglades, Dry Tortugas and various coral reefs in the Keys. “I love marine biology! I was able to learn about so many different things, including coral reefs and deep-sea creatures. Sadly, I learned about pollution impacts, but I also learned ways to stop it. We were able to go on a Fury field trip and it was awesome! Thank you so much for giving us a grant for our marine science unit," said McKenzie, a 4th grade student at Grace Lutheran School. Education is vital for the sustainability of UWCK's Revitalizing the Florida Keys through Reef Restoration and Beyond initiative, fostering positive habits and long-term success for the community and ocean environment. The UWCK Marine Science Education Grant program, with support from the United Arab Emirates, is committed to nurturing the next generation of reef stewards. Eligible applicants from Monroe County School District schools, marine science nonprofits, childcare facilities and preschools can receive up to $2,500 or $500, respectively. The grant covers various expenses, including transportation, curriculum and supplies to enhance marine science programming. Applications must be submitted by September 21st, 2023. For further details, visit https://www.keysunitedway.org/MSEG. ### About United Way of Collier and the Keys The United Way of Collier and the Keys improves lives by mobilizing the caring power of community to advance the common good.
