Contact: Dora DeMaria Reef Relief 305-294-3100 reefrelief@gmail.com REEF RELIEF CELEBRATES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Reef Relief celebrates Executive Director, Millard McCleary’s 15-year anniversary with the organization. Please join us in congratulating Mill in this exciting accomplishment. Millard McCleary is the Executive Director for Reef Relief. Originally from Maryland, he spent countless hours fishing around Chesapeake Bay. This is where he learned, early on, of the connection of clean water to healthy ecosystems. This led to 18 years of service working with Clean Water Action (CWA) in Baltimore which then continued into the Tampa area. Over that time, he worked on dozens of water quality related campaigns. He was also the lead organizer in CWA’s campaign partnership with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) Working America to establish new offices in several US cities.
Mill came to Reef Relief on March 1, 2008 to help run programs to educate and advocate for coral reef ecosystem conservation, specifically in South Florida. Some of his successes with Reef Relief include establishing the Key West Marine Park in collaboration with the City of Key West and Monroe County, founding Reef Relief’s Coral Camp for Kids program, and joining Reef Relief as a member of the Everglades Coalition. Mill helped implement Reef Relief’s Skip the Straw Florida Keys and Protect your Skin, Protect our Reefs campaigns. Under his leadership, Reef Relief was instrumental in passing several City of Key West ordinances related to these campaigns to further protect our nearshore waters. He has lead hundreds of volunteers in removing hundreds of thousands of pounds of marine debris, organizing Key West’s storm drain pollution prevention and storm water education programs..

The Gardens Hotel owner Kate Miano presented the Key West Police Mounted Unit with a check for over $3,000 -- funds raised in the May Derby Day fundraiser at the hotel. Miano has hosted this annual fundraiser since 2017. Each year she has generously donated to the Mounted Unit after hosting the event that coincides with the Kentucky Derby. The Mounted Unit is one of the most popular units of the Key West Police Department. These equestrian officers provide a daily presence that is particularly beneficial downtown and with crowds.

Last year, the Coast Guard Cutter Mohawk adopted the area surrounding the Trumbo Point base under the City's Adopt-A-Spot program. Today, Commander Andrew L. Pate and his crew met with Vice Mayor Sam Kaufman and Police Chief Sean Brandenburg to renew the pledge and to conduct a major cleanup of the area. Vice Mayor Kaufman welcomed the crew and read a proclamation re-designating Mohawk Day, which will be formally presented at the March 7th City Commission meeting. Mohawk Day was first proclaimed in 1991 by then-mayor Capt. Tony Tarracino when the cutter first arrived in the island city. "The crew of the Mohawk," read Kaufman, "has provided a significant and valued addition to our schools, churches, civic organizations, economy, and community at large for many years." The Mohawk is the final of thirteen 270-foot medium-endurance cutters built for the U.S. Coast Guard. It is the namesake of the USS Mohawk, a vessel that launched 14 attacks against Nazi submarines during World War II..

Thanks to the impetus of two Key West City Ambassadors, City Hall now has a Flag Retirement Box! Robert Irvine and Mike deBettencourt worked with Mayor Teri Johnston, Assistant City Manager Todd Stoughton and Community Services Foreman Richard Sarver to make this important service a reality. Irvine got the ball rolling after being involved with a similar project in New Jersey. The new box is outside of the customer service side of City Hall. It was unveiled last week, and Irvine and the Mayor deposited the first retired flags. The retired flags will be delivered to American Legion Post 28 located on Stock Island next to the Key West Golf Club and they will burn the flags. Post 28 currently conducts flag burning ceremonies. In fact, the VFW Post 3911 on North Roosevelt Blvd. delivers their retired flags to the American Legion Post 28 for burning.

The City of Key West wants to make tenants and landlords aware that a new bill signed into law in Tallahassee overrides a tenant-protection ordinance passed by the City Commission in August of 2022. House Bill 1417 supersedes any local government regulation of landlord-tenant relationships. In August, the City Commission passed an amendment to Section 18-710 of the City's Code of Ordinances that would require landlords to provide sixty days' notice before ending a month-to-month rental agreement or increasing rent by more that 5 percent. However, the new state law reduces the notice period to between 15 to 30 days. The commission gave staff direction to start the |
