MONROE COUNTY REMEMBERS THE LATE MIKE FORSTER AND PROCLAIMS FRIDAY AS ‘BE LIKE MIKE DAY’

MONROE COUNTY, FL – Monroe County Mayor David Rice and the Board of County Commissioners proclaimed Oct. 21 as Be Like Mike Day in conjunction with United Way of Collier and the Keys’ project honoring the late “Mangrove” Mike Forster.

Forster was a dedicated citizen of the Keys, stepping up and helping the community from one end to the other during disasters. He was a former Islamorada council member and was a sitting county commissioner when he passed away.

Forster believed strongly in paying it forward, and United Way’s project focuses on performing random acts of kindness. Kicking off last Monday, the nonprofit encourages the community to give back to Keys kids, be kind to the ocean, help our furry friends, and thank veterans and law enforcement.

To end the week, “Be Like Mike Day” is this Friday, Oct. 21, and it was his birthday. The United Way and Monroe County encourage the community to “feed the Keys” by donating non-perishable food items to local food banks. Three local food banks include Burton Memorial in Tavernier, KAIR in Marathon, and Star of the Sea in Key West.

CAPT. SKIP BRADEEN OF ISLAMORADA PRESENTED HONORARY CONCH CERTIFICATE BY BOCC

MONROE COUNTY, FL – The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners presented an Honorary Conch Certificate to Capt. Skip Bradeen for all his years as an icon in the community.

Bradeen made his way to the Florida Keys after serving four years in the Air Force and working as a deckhand on a fishing boat for a summer.

With aspirations to be a butcher, his friend mentioned a trip to the Florida Keys, and Bradeen, who had never heard of the island chain, gave his buddy a ride to Islamorada. The rest is history -- a story many know well -- he fell in love with the islands and never left.

“Skip is firmly ensconced as a highly respected captain and a valued community member,” said Commissioner Holly Merrill Raschein. “He avails his local celebrity for many charities and causes, and the Florida Keys are lucky to have him as an Honorary Conch.”

MONROE COUNTY PROCLAIMS THE WEEK OF OCT. 16-22 AS NATIONAL FRIENDS OF LIBRARIES WEEK

MONROE COUNTY, FL – Monroe County Mayor David Rice and the Board of County Commissioners declared the week of Oct. 16-22 as National Friends of Libraries Week in Monroe County. The Friends of the Library organizations support each branch of the Monroe County Public Library System and raise money that enables the libraries to provide resources for additional programming, much-needed equipment, support for children's summer reading, and special events throughout the year.

"The Friends groups understand the critical importance of well-funded libraries and advocate to ensure our libraries get the resources they need to provide a wide variety of services to all ages," said Rice.

The Friends volunteer their time for the community's betterment and often host book sales throughout the year. To learn more about the Friends groups, visit www.keyslibraries.org.

NEW ALL-ONLINE PERMITTING SYSTEM HAS FIRST-WEEK SUCCESSES

MONROE COUNTY, FL – On Oct. 3, Monroe County’s new all-online permitting system went live and had a busy first week as staff identified last-minute issues and processed workarounds or software fixes quickly and collaboratively. Paper applications or document submissions are no longer accepted at the building department since the system went live. Permit applications and permits processed before Oct. 3 will remain in paper format and will continue processing in paper format.

“Our citizens and contractors were able to enter 141 building permits successfully since it went live,” said Monroe County Permitting Administrative Director Ed Koconis. “The customers navigated their way through the intuitive software, received help from our customer service representatives, or reviewed the webpage for FAQs, checklists, or online video tutorials.”

In gaining feedback from local companies who used the system the first week, the overall sentiment was liking the new system with limited to no issues. One company commented that they submitted 18 applications the night before, and it was nice to be able to do this in the evening versus the 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. building department schedule.

“This week has gone well, and we still have a couple of busy weeks ahead as we see more of the permits move through review and inspection and those workflows get used,” said Koconis. “The review teams should be able to see the power of concurrent and joint reviews, allowing the permit turnaround process to be much quicker than turning in permits in person.”

Permitting can be found at www.monroecounty-fl.gov/onlinepermitting.

It's time to renew your Residential Parking Permit for Old Town. The stickers will help ensure marked residential parking spaces are reserved for residents.

If you already have last years permit, you can renew it easily online at HTTPS://CITYOFKEYWESTPERMITS.RMCPAY.COM or stop by the rear entrance City Hall 1300 White Street Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

After October 31st last year's pink conch shell permits will no longer be valid for parking in the spaced marked "Residential" in the historic neighborhoods, nor will they grant the 4-hour free parking credit (one time per day) in select City lots.

This year's Residential Parking Permit is proud to display the Southernmost Buoy and will be mailed to your address on file if you apply or renew online.

The permits cost $39.13 for a full year of parking. If you did not purchase one last years, you will need to apply. You can apply in-person or online. Applicants will need to upload proof of residency, a valid driver's license, and vehicle registration to qualify for a residential permit.

In addition to ensuring that residents can park in the marked residential spaces, the permit allows for parking for up to four hours, one time per day, without paying in any one of the five parking lots:

 * Fire Station #2 in the 600 block of Simonton - Zone 33054

 * Key West Bight main lot in the 800 block of Caroline - Zone 33046

 * Park N Ride garage in the 300 block of Grinnell - Zone 33048

 * Truman Waterfront Park (except during events) -Zone 33051

 * Smathers Beach on-street parking on South Roosevelt Blvd - Zone 33053

 * Jackson Square behind the county courthouse, nights and weekends only - Zone 33049

Brighten the Square!

We want your input on enhancing Key West's most iconic public square.

Mallory Square is beloved for its nightly Sunset Celebration, an iconic event that brings together the best of the Keys' natural beauty and unique culture. This is just one of the many roles this public square has played in its history, from anti-piracy outpost to auction house; shipbreaking yard to fishing pier. Today the City of Key West is asking, how can we realize the full potential of Mallory Square to support the Keys' culture, commerce and community?

Click here https://mallorysquare.engage.sasaki.com/ to join the planning process! Help write the next chapter in Mallory Square's story.

From September 2022 to May 2023 the City of Key West will be conducting a collaborative master planning process to guide future improvements to the square. The planning process will be community-centered, relying on input from both residents and visitors at all stages of development.

The famous Zombie Bike Ride is scheduled for Sunday, October 23rd. Motorists can expect it to affect traffic from East Martello Tower on South Roosevelt Blvd to the Amphitheater on Sunday evening. Although the ride has just a rolling street closure which follows the riders, motorists can expect some serious delays because thousands of cyclists will be participating.

The ride leaves East Martello at 6 p.m. and heads to the Key West Amphitheater at the Truman Waterfront Park. Key West International Airport will be accessible from the east end of South Roosevelt during this time.

There will be no bus service from 6-8 p.m. on South Roosevelt Blvd west of Oceanwalk Apartments. Bus service on South Street, Whitehead Street, and in Bahama Village will also be temporarily suspended during those hours as well.

Buses will provide service on Simonton Street and Flagler on that evening.

FEMA will be setting up a Mobile Registration Intake Center in Key West at the Nelson English Park, 1127 Thomas Street. The center will begin operation on Saturday, October 22nd, open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

According to the license agreement with the City, "FEMA will use the premises primarily as a Mobile Registration Intake Center where FEMA will receive members of the public for the purpose of registering applicants, providing information such as the status of applications, and general information on FEMA disaster assistance. Other Federal, State, local and voluntary organizations may also use the premises to provide similar information on their programs."

----------------------------------------

Key West's biggest party week is nearly here, kicking off with the Goombay Festival Friday and Saturday. This family-oriented event features great food and entertainment. All day Friday, beginning Friday morning until midnight on Saturday, Petronia and Fort Streets will be closed to traffic. There will be no bus service west of Simonton Street. Instead, riders will need to use the bus stops on Simonton.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Goombay change: The field on Fort Street will be open for the stage, but there will be no carnival this year.

Frank Sinatra organized and hosted a pre-inagural ball at the DC Armory on the eve of Inauguration Day, January 19, 1961, considered as one of the biggest parties ever held in Washington, D.C. Sinatra recruited many Hollywood stars who performed and attended, and went as far as convincing Broadway theatres to suspend their shows for the night to accommodate some of their actors attending the gala. With tickets ranging from $100 per person to $10,000 per group, Sinatra hoped to raise $1.7 million ($14.3 million in today's dollars) for the Democratic Party to eliminate its debt brought on by a hard-fought campaign. Many Hollywood stars gave brief speeches or performed acts. Performances and speeches included Frederic March, Sidney Poitier, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Kelly, Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, Milton Berle, Jimmy Durante, Harry Belafonte and Sinatra himself.

Due to an epic snow-storm many performers were unable to return to their hotel and were forced to perform out of costume. The power kept going on and off. It was to air the following week on Network TV but when the producers reviewed the film footage they pulled it. Many Americans never realized this amazing gala event ever happened.
