ART IN PUBLIC PLACES

Title: “Justice”

Artist: Lothar Speer

Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

Dimensions: 3x6 ft

2021-2022

Permanent Location: Monroe County Courthouse

Plantation Key, FL, USA

It was installed by Eric Berube in its final permanent home, the lobby of the new Plantation Key Monroe County Court House. Following is the official QRC Narrative that was installed at the original painting: “JUSTICE” illustrates the Bahamian immigration to the Florida Keys and its historic contribution to early settlement and agriculture through the introduction of the banana plantation culture. On the right the image commemorates the epic, perilous and innovative construction of Flagler’s railroad. The conceptual fulcrum of Lady Justice as a Caribbean archetype pays homage to this history. Her eyes are not covered by the traditional blindfold but the wing tips of two great white herons reflecting the rich fauna and flora of The Florida Keys.

MONROE COUNTY’S COLDIRON AND MERRILL RASCHEIN ELECTED TO THE FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES BOARD

MONROE COUNTY, FL – Monroe County Commissioners Michelle Coldiron and Holly Merrill Raschein were elected Friday to represent the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) at the annual FAC conference held in Orlando. Commissioner Jim Scholl also attended the conference with County Administrator Roman Gastesi and Legislative Affairs Director Lisa Tennyson.

Coldiron was elected by her peers to serve as second vice president of the governing board of the association. Coldiron has been a FAC member since being elected to the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners in 2018.

“The amount of knowledge and networking exchanged is immeasurable, and being on the executive board will allow Monroe County issues to see the limelight on the state level,” Coldiron said. “The connections I’ve made through FAC will continue to benefit the well-being of our county and all of the counties in Florida.”

In addition, Merrill Raschein was elected by her peers to the association’s board of directors.

“This is really great to have two Monroe County commissioners represent us on this association,” said Tennyson. “Commissioner Coldiron brings her ability to build consensus and is a natural leader, and Commissioner Merrill Raschein brings her legislative experience to the board. Both are a huge asset to FAC.”

The FAC Board of Directors comprises one county commissioner from each state senate district (40), five executive officers, six county commissioners appointed at large, and the association’s past presidents.

The FAC represents the diverse interests of Florida’s counties, especially the importance of protecting home rule – the concept that government closest to the people governs best – through advocacy, education, and collaboration.

July 19 5-8pm City Commission Special Meeting for the PERRY COURT DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT

August 2, 2022 City Commission Meeting

It was only fitting that, following the recent Key Lime Festival, the Key West City Commission would declare July 6th as Kermit Carpenter Day.

Carpenter, owner of Kermit's Key West Key Lime Shoppe, "is a pie-oneer of the Key lime pie industry who has devoted more than a quarter-century of his life to the perfection, production, and promotion of Key lime pie," according to the proclamation.

Aside from his delicious creations, Carpenter is known for his unique means of promoting his business, standing outside the Shoppe in a lime-green chef's outfit proffering a pie to passers-by.

In the photo: City Commissioners Gregory Davila, Jimmy Weekley and Mary Lou Hoover (at the dais), Mayor Teri Johnston, Kermit Carpenter, and Commissioners Clayton Lopez and Billy Wardlow. Vice Mayor Sam Kaufman was in attendance via Zoom.

Key West City Manager Patti McLauchlin, during Wednesday's City Commission meeting, honored retired employee Richard Pazo for his 30 years of dedicated service to the City.

He started with the City at the solid waste plant, serving as the operator for some time. Later, he joined the facilities maintenance project construction team.

One of his favorite accomplishments with Community Services, said McLauchlin, is the fact that he built the tiny town of houses that provide magic for the children every Christmas at Bayview Park.

"He's known for his quiet demeanor," said McLauchlin. "He's very quiet. He gets the job done and you never even know he's around."

She added that, by what she's heard, he's a force to be reckoned with on the golf course.

"Kind of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," she said.

She noted that Pazo and she worked together for his entire career.

"I for one," she said, "am very grateful that you've been with my team for that long."

Emergency managers and responders gathered this week at the Monroe County emergency operations center for a full response drill. The dry run ensures that communication and coordination run smoothly in the event of a real hurricane.

The group worked with a complete scenario of an approaching storm as well as the response to the aftermath.

Key West participants included Fire Chief Alan Averette, Interim Emergency Manager Capt. Gregory Barroso, Transit Direct Rod Delostrinos, Police Lt. Joe Tripp, and Fire Lt. Karl Wagner.

"These drills ensure that we all work together under the federal incident command system," said Capt. Barroso, "so we can serve the community in the best way possible if a storm hits."

Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg accepted reaccreditation from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation recently in Orlando. The commission approved recommendations to renew accreditation made by assessors in April.

“I want to congratulate the entire department for having attained reaccreditation,” said Police Chief Brandenburg. “I am particularly proud that our department has earned excelsior status, an honor awarded when a department has been reaccredited five times.

“This award is recognition of this department’s commitment to providing the highest level of law enforcement service to our community and our visitors,” continued Brandenburg. “I am proud and honored to lead the professional men and women of the Key West Police Department who embody our core values of respect, integrity, fairness and service.”

Chief Brandenburg gave particular accolades to Lt. Jason Castillo and Accreditation Manager Linda Mack for their hard work on the entire accreditation process.

In April, a team of state assessors spent three days scrutinizing all aspects of the department to ensure it meets the highest level of best practices standards for the state. Accreditation sets a high level of professionalism in a law enforcement agency. It’s a voluntary process that allows the department to constantly measure itself based upon standards set by its peers across the state. The assessments are conducted every three years, but the process itself is a daily practice in every officer’s career. It allows each to remain familiar with the department’s policies and ensures the most professional department possible. Accreditation ensures to the community a knowledgeable police department that provides the very best service possible to the community.

The playground at the Truman Waterfront Park has been completely resurfaced and it looks like a brand new park. The City of Key West’s Community Services Department stripped away the old surface, replacing it with a layer of Flexi-Pave, a soft, safe, porous material.

CATHY ROSE AND AASE MAY

AT JAG  JULY 1ST -26TH

First paired almost 25 years ago at the former Lucky Street Gallery, current Jag Gallery artists Cathy Rose and Aase May reunite for a two person show opening with a preview reception on Friday July 1st from 5-7.

New Orleans based artist and gallerist Cathy Rose presents fresh works of her familiar, evocative and deeply personal subject matter and technique in sculpture, assemblage and painting in this new series representing what the artist refers to as another beginning, personal liberation and rebirth.

Danish born, long time Key West painter Aase May’s youthful memories of museum shows in Copenhagen with early influence from Klee and Picasso and later the Impressionists, Expressionists, and Outsider Artists are reflected in her personal take of the world; the light, the dark, the beauty, in works of oil and cold wax on canvas.

The gallery reception is free and open to the public with refreshments offered.

JAG Gallery is located at the Simonton Street end of Duval Square, 1075 Duval Street with ample, free parking.  Gallery hours are Tuesday-Sunday noon to 5, Monday’s by appointment. Part 5 "The MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE IN EACH STATE" by TRAVEL AND LEISURE Author Anne Olivia Bauso . To Go directly to the Link to see ALL 50 States Click TRAVEL or simply look at the 5 States I put in every Issue. In this Issue we'll feature : MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA,MISSISSIPPI, MISSOURI, & MONTANA. We will Identify the Photographer and Except Noted ALL are from Getty Images.

Michigan: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Couple walking along dune grass, Empire Bluff, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Michigan, USA

Ed Reschke/Getty Images. Out-of-staters might not equate Michigan with sandy beaches and striking sand dunes, but both are found along the state's largely coastal boundaries — most notably, on the 35 miles of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This carved-by-glaciers shoreline is home to a beech-maple forest, scenic hiking and driving, and the immense namesake dunes rising high above Lake Michigan.

Minnesota: North Shore Scenic Drive. , Minnesota.

Craig Voth/Courtesy of Explore Minnesota. The North Shore is a road-tripper's daydream. Many Minnesotans and Midwesterners drive this Lake Superior-adjacent route time and time again, hitting the four-tiered Gooseberry Falls, the precariously perched Split Rock Lighthouse, and the tallest waterfall in the state, High Falls (shared by the U.S. and Canada). And don't miss World's Best Donuts, a very important stop for cinnamon-sugar donuts and deep-fried "skizzles."

Mississippi: Natchez Trace Parkway.

Natchez Trace Parkway, Mississippi. Carol M. Highsmith/Buyenlarge/Getty Images

Beauty and blacktop meet on the Natchez Trace, a 444-mile drive that crosses Mississippi like a pageant sash, following a Native American foot trail that goes back millennia. Instead of billboards and interstate exit signs, you'll cruise past cypress swamps and meadows edged by black-eyed Susans and log fences, with lots of pull-over opportunities for picnics and nature walks.

Missouri: Ozark National Scenic Riverways.

Historic Alley Springs Mill, Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Missouri, USA. StevenSchremp/Getty Images

The spring-fed Current and Jacks Fork rivers anchor this national park. Swim, canoe, and fish in its crystal-clear waters and explore the area's caves (more than 300 have been discovered so far, some only accessible by boat), trails, natural springs, and historic mills.

Montana: Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Female hiker on narrow highline trail stands on overlook with arms outstretched, looking down on going-to-the-sun road

Anna Gorin/Getty Images. Take the ride of your life on the white-knuckle Going-to-the-Sun Road, a 52-mile route that climbs above the clouds in Glacier National Park. Looking out the window takes a bit of bravery, but your prize is jaw-dropping views of alpine valleys, flowing rivers, and fields of wildflowers far below the surrounding peaks and ridgelines. The road crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass (elevation: 6,646 feet), where you can get out and hike Hidden Lake and Highline trails.

We Continue with ALL 50 States in Part 6 in the next Next Issue that will Feature 5 More States.
