For the Birds Wildlife Center Fundraiser February 20

The “It’s for the Birds” fundraiser to benefit the Key West Wildlife Center is set for Sunday, February 20, 3 pm to 5:30 pm at the West Martello Towers. This annual event offers fabulous food, an amazing Silent Auction and raffles generously donated from a variety of local resorts, businesses and restaurants. The Key West Wildlife Center, located at 1801 White Street, is a non-profit organization providing rescue and rehabilitative care to wildlife from mile marker 0-30 in the Florida Keys. They are a rescue and rehabilitation facility operating as a trauma clinic and field hospital. Their main focus is rescuing and rehabilitating sick, injured or orphaned native wildlife and returning them to the wild. Any businesses wishing to donate or participate should contact volunteer coordinator Janice Manari at 717-580-8333 or the Wildlife Center.

In addition to guest’s opportunity to bid on great prizes, there will be entertainment, wine, beer and beverages. The center’s educational wildlife ambassador will be on hand to answer questions about the programs. Tickets are just $35 and available on line at www.Keywestwildlifecenter.org. This is the Center’s busiest time of the year and needs the community’s support for their Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation program.

Born and raised in Key West, Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso developed a passion for music at a young age. It lead her to pursue a Bachelors and Master’s degree in Music from Virginia Commonwealth University and doctoral studies with emphasis in conducting from Peabody Institute of John Hopkins University.

In 2002, Sebrina María Alfonso became the first Cuban American conductor invited to conduct Cuba’s premier orchestra, the National Orchestra of Cuba, where she received standing ovations. Several sold out shows and years later, Alfonso received accolades for her appearances as a guest conductor with such esteemed orchestras as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Jose Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony, the Pacific Symphony, the Prague Radio Symphony, the Orchestra de Rus in Sienna, Italy, and the Women’s Philharmonic, among many others. She even conducted an underwater concert for over 400 divers which received world-wide recognition.

As a champion of contemporary works, the Maestra has also experimented in composing. Her work Freedom Crossing was premiered to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Mariel Cuban boat-crossing in which thousands risked their lives to gain freedom. Currently, she is collaborating with Thomas Dubois Hormel in creating a ballet with the prestigious Martha Graham Dance Company to the music of The Legend of Bird Mountain. The Maestra explained: “As an artist, when you have access to the composer, it’s more personal. I know him and the beauty in his music is pretty much him. He’s a great soul and incredibly nice person . . . his music captures such beautiful colors.”

57TH OLD ISLAND DAYS ART FESTIVAL AT TRUMAN WATERFRONT PARK FEBRUARY 26-27

The Key West Art Center proudly presents the 57th annual Old Island Days Art Festival at the beautiful Truman Waterfront Park.  This year’s show brings back some of your favorite artists and will introduce you to many new talented ones.  The waterfront setting has given us the opportunity to set up more booths and our artists responded with over 110 artists scheduled to attend.

Artists and crafters will line the quay showing watercolors, oil/acrylic, mixed media, photography, and more works for your home.  In addition, you will find jewelry, clothing, sculpture, glass, and wood along with plenty of fun funky tropical arts and crafts.  This group of artists has something for every taste and budget, and we hope you will stop down to stroll the waterfront and meet this great group of artists, some of whom have traveled from as far as the west coast, and others much more local.

Drive, bike, walk or bus down to see us as there is plenty of parking and bike racks and we are steps away from the Duval Loop stop.  Artists will greet you from 10-5 each day.  We look forward to seeing all our locals and visitors for a wonderful art filled weekend!

The Old Island Days Art Festival is sponsored by the Key West Art Center, located at 301 Front Street.  The non-profit Community Art Center is Key West’s oldest gallery and features original works of art by over 50 local artists.

Antarctica Wanderings — Southern Elephant Seals

We hit the beach at Gold Harbor, South Georgia Island a little after 5am to catch sunrise but the clouds, rain, sleet and snow canceled that idea. But upon landing we found ourselves amongst a pile of juvenile Southern Elephant Seals mostly only a few months old doing what they do; sleep, belch, roll around ontop of each other and periodically mock fight a neighbor, hoping to build up the fighting skills to be a Beach Master with his own harem of cows one day. Endless up close entertainment.

ANNE MCKEE ARTIST’S FUND FINE ART AUCTION CELEBRATES 27th YEAR

The Anne McKee Artists Fund is gearing up for its biggest event of the year: the 27th Annual Fine Art Auction to be held Wednesday, February 23rd. The Fund is happy to announce that this year’s auction and gala is live and in person. Tickets go on sale today at www.mckeefund.org.

The Studios of Key West (TSKW) is hosting the event. In the interest of public health, TSKW is following strict Covid protocols. They are limiting the number of guests, so get your ticket fast!

Beginning on Thursday, February 3rd, from 6-8PM, the art will be on display to preview at TSKW, located at the corner of Eaton and Simonton streets. The Studios is also open for previewing art Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year, 50 fabulous works of art will be auctioned during the main event on February 23rd. The artwork this year offers something for every taste, including photography, wood with glass, watercolors, fiber art, ceramic, mixed media, and more.

Anne McKee Artists Fund President Marsha Williams says she’s thrilled to be back at the Studios, though last year’s virtual auction was a success.

“Our online buyers in 2021 purchased amazing artwork,” she said, “and allowed us to continue distributing grants to worthwhile projects created by Florida Keys residents.” Williams also noted that the Marion B. Good award for 2022 will be presented to Susann D’Antonio during the auction gala. D’Antonio is being recognized for her continued support and artistic contributions to the auction and to the Fund’s mission of Artists Helping Artists.

The 2022 Unsung Hero is Stephanie Hellstrom who served as the Fund’s president and publicity chair and who continues to serve as an auction volunteer. Artists who are participating in the auction receive 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the work, while the McKee Fund receives the remainder, which it awards to Keys artists for select projects. Founded by longtime Key West resident Anne McKee, the not for-profit fund has awarded more than $343,000 to more than 400 artists since 1994.

“When I started, I thought it would help people buy frames and materials,” said Fund Founder Anne McKee, “I never dreamed it would help people do so many big things.” As well as fine artwork, attractions at the auction include gourmet hors d’oeuvres and champagne. Tickets are $25 per person

In the mid-1970s, a young man (portrayed by As One’s Michael Kelly) lands ashore in Manhattan without a map. Negotiating his way into a life in the performing arts, The Pleasing Recollection chronicles his musical adventures as he charmingly stumbles into some of the musical and theater giants of the era including Larry Kert, Leonard Bernstein, Charles Ludlam, and Aaron Copland among them. Librettist Stephen Kitsakos’s autobiographical story rolls forward with composer Martin Hennessy’s ingenious score. At the intersection of cabaret and opera they create a playful, witty, and joyful tale.

Tickets are still available for the Anne McKee Artists 27th Annual Fine Art Auction. The event is on Wednesday, February 23rd at The Studios of Key West at the corner of Eaton and Simonton streets. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the auction begins at 7 p.m.

In the interest of public health, the Studios is following strict Covid protocols. They are limiting the number of guests, so get your ticket fast!

Tickets are $25 per person and $50 for VIP seating and include gourmet hors d’oeuvres and champagne. Tickets are available at www.mckeefund.org or at the door the night of the auction.

Artists who are participating in the auction receive 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the work, while the McKee Fund receives the remainder, which it awards to Keys artists for select projects. Founded by longtime Key West resident Anne McKee, the not-for-profit fund has awarded over $343,000 to more than 400 artists since 1994.

“When I started, I thought it would help people buy frames and materials,” said Fund Founder Anne McKee, “I never dreamed it would help people do so many big things.”

The 51 works of art are available to preview at the Studios Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The artwork this year offers something for every taste, including photography, wood with glass, watercolors, fiber art, ceramic, mixed media, and more.

In addition, they are posted on Anne McKee Artist’s Fund social media and all of them can be viewed on the www.mckeefund.org website.

Garden Orchids & Seedlings Need Your Help

Join us at the Native Plant Nursery at the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden where you can learn to propagate and care for Orchids and the native plants of the Keys, many of which are endangered of being lost. The nursery currently has approximately 1,500 plants in various stages of germination & growth. Orchids need dividing and some TLC to expand the collection.

Volunteers are in the nursery on Tuesday and Saturday mornings from 9 am to noon. Meet fellow gardeners when you can. No commitment is needed except for your enthusiasm. Help fulfill the Garden’s mission to “preserve, develop, expand and maintain the garden as an arboretum, botanical garden, wildlife refuge and education center”.

The City of Key West was named a 2021 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management.

"Your community should be proud to live in a place that makes the planting and care of trees a priority, and you should be proud of a job well done!" wrote the Tree City team in a letter announcing the recognition.

Karen DeMaria, the City's Urban Forester, says she's grateful for the recognition, one that the City has received ten times.

"Our island's canopy is vital to the quality of life of our residents and visitors," said DeMaria.

Each year on Arbor Day, the City urges property owners to plant a tree.

"Trees on publicly and privately owned property within the city are economic and aesthetic asset to the citizens," says DeMaria, "because of their important and meaningful contribution to a healthy and beautiful community."

Key West achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

Trees are assets to a community when properly planted and maintained, says DeMaria. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits.

The second Cemetery Stroll to be offered at the Historic Key West Cemetery this season will take place on Saturday February 19, 2022. During the stroll, small groups of visitors will be escorted to gravesites where interpreters will tell the stories of the deceased in brief monologues. The groups are scheduled for departures at 9:30, 9:50, and 10:10. Reservations are necessary, and can be made by calling (305) 304-1453.

Among the gravesites to be visited are those of Frank Adams, Willard Gomez, the Figueredo plot, the Cobo plot, and the Castillo plot. Special features include the Bahama Village Music Program presenting Ellen Sanchez and Ben Harrison presenting Elena Milagro Hoyos.

The tour will take approximately 90 minutes. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and plan to walk over a mile on uneven ground. Bottled water will be provided.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn first-hand about some of the fascinating people who have given Key West its colorful and significant character. Space is limited for the tours and pre-registration is required. A donation of $20 (cash or check) per person to the Historic Florida Keys Foundation is recommended, with all proceeds devoted to cemetery restoration. Participants may enter the cemetery by either the Windsor Street or Frances Street gate and go to the registration table on 2nd Ave.

A third stroll featuring other gravesites will take place on March 19th.

The cemetery strolls are sponsored by the City of Key West and the Historic Florida Keys Foundation.
