The Aerodrome A was the brainchild of noted physicist Samuel Pierpont Langley (whose design was the Wright brothers’ inspiration if you were paying attention in our short history lesson in the introduction portion). His first attempt at a crewless airplane was a resounding success, and demand for a manned aircraft was through the roof! Unfortunately, his attempts at a manned aircraft failed miserably.. |

The Goblin was envisioned to be the smallest and lightest fighter jet in the world. It was easy to fly, stable, and could recover from spins quite easily. It was meant to escort large bombers as back-up fighting power. It was launched from the bomber’s belly and dropped into combat. It sounds too good to be true, and it probably was because even after multiple attempts, the Goblin did not work. It was able to be dropped effortlessly, but it could not reconnect with the retractable tether. |

Back in the 1950s, VTOL technology in aircrafts was all the rave. Every military aircraft had to have VTOL technology. The Lockheed Salmon was designed to be the best when it came to VTOL technology. Two prototypes were produced. However, as in most cases of worst aircrafts, the Lockheed Salmon did not perform as expected. It took 32 test flights that failed until the project was completely stopped. |

Armed with the latest aviation technology, such as forward-swept wings, which were meant to optimize this aircraft’s handling and maneuverability, the Grumman failed in almost all aspects of its design. The aircraft was so unruly and unmanageable that no pilot could even successfully fly it. It had more than 400 test flights until the project was officially put to an end. |

German engineer Brunolf Baade had the idea to convert the Baade 152, which was a fighter jet, to become a commercial aircraft. This was the time after the war where there was no desperate need for fighter jets. Its first flight proved to be fatal because it immediately crashed, killing the entire crew and the people on board. It was said that the crash was due to fuel supply, which caused the plane to malfunction. |

The Rockwell XFV-12 was another experimental aircraft involved in VTOL technology. With the sleek and futuristic design of this aircraft, one would think that the Rockwell would be a massive success! However, because its heavy weight could not handle a vertical take-off, not to mention that the aircraft’s development cost is more expensive than its ROI, the program was brought to a permanent halt. |

Russia has built a supersonic passenger jet, which was the first of its kind back in the day. However, it did not operate as planned. The aircraft garnered three humiliating crashes, one of which even lit the Paris Air Show (and not in a good way). After all of these ordeals, the Russians were very hesitant to fly this sleek-looking aircraft. It was said that even though this was the first supersonic passenger jet of its kind, everything was built cheaply that even the toilets did not operate properly. |

51st EARTH DAY JAM with That Hippie Band Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson saw the ravages of the 1969 Santa Barbara, California oil spill. He saw the Cuyahoga River catch fire from pollutants in downtown Cleveland. The LA smog was so bad you could no longer see the famous Hollywood sign. He founded the first Earth Day April 22, 1970, and 20 million mostly young Americans took to the streets to protest for a cleaner environment. Fast forward 51 years later, Earth Day will be celebrated by over a billion people in 192 countries on every continent. The planet still needs our help more than ever, and we all still need this magical music era. The 50th Earth Day in 2020 was the cleanest ever after the Covid locked down of the planet. Emissions were down as much as 45%. People in India could see the Himalayas for the first time, NASA satellites documented changes worldwide, the Grand Canal of Venice was crystal clear. Join us Thursday April 22nd for a special celebration of this glorious 51st Earth Day, with a fugitive band of Hippies from 60s that have been hanging out performing in Key West. They all use to have long hair, smoked weed, and could play any 60s song that anyone could remember. Gary Hempsey and “That Hippie Band”, will help you remember all those songs from the Age of Aquarius. The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, Jefferson Starship, and some Crosby, Stills, & Nash will be rediscovered. The 2019 Earth Day Jam was a huge success, this year will be even better. So come on people now, smile on your brother, and enjoy all this wonderful music once again. It will be like Woodstock without the mud. Wear your coolest Hippie clothes (oxymoron intended) and join the glorious celebration of the 51st Earth Day with Gary Hempsey and That Hippie Band will be tuned up ready to go. Reef Relief will be on display along with the Conch Republic Marine Army, and the Key West Parrot Heads will all help us celebrate. 1958 Edsel Corsair The Edsel Corsair was built by Ford back in 1958, and is another example of a vehicle whose performance didn't match the hype. Edsel was supposed to help Ford compete with GM, but this example of late-'50s engineering severely underperformed. It was just another substandard sedan and less than 10,000 were sold in 1959. The following year, Ford ended Edsels and the word has become synonymous with failed car ventures. The Corsair, in the meantime, has become synonymous with the word "lemon." |

AMC Gremlin The AMC Gremlin was faster than the other compact cars of its age, but that doesn't really help unless you're drag racing with another compact. Either the front is too long or the end is too short — either way, this was a terrible car to try to handle. The wipers were vacuum-powered, which gives you an idea of the shortages in this vehicle. That being said, it had personality and is now a collector's item. Indeed, it has far better gas mileage than other cars of the muscle era. |

Suzuki Samurai The Suzuki Samurai fell way short on expectations for buyers in the 1980s. Just like the decade that it came from, it was fast and sporty, but all too dangerous. The four-wheel-drive was nimble and actually outsold the Jeep Wrangler in 1987. That was until people realized that, just like a real ninja, it could break out in a flip without a warning. Once it became known that turning corners at normal speeds could easily become a flip and roll-over, sales plummeted. |

Desoto Airflow The Desoto Airflow was produced along with a sibling Chrysler model as an innovative car that would have probably sold much better had it been introduced 20 years later. It had 50-50 front-rear wheel weight distribution, an aerodynamic singlet-style fuselage, and was light. Although cheap, it was too ahead of its time because the new design caused the engine to fall out in early models, giving it a bad name. Redesigns solved the problem, but it was unable to shake its bad reputation. |

Amphicar The Amphicar had a lot going for it, seeing as it could be driven into the water. After that, it needed to be greased in over a dozen points, one of them requiring the driver to detach his seat. Most of these were sold in the U.S., but these cars aren't good for much more than their novelty — the front wheels maneuver both on ground and water. "We like to think of it as the fastest car on the water and fastest boat on the road," said one owner. |

1957 Trabant P50 Trabant P50s are relatively unknown in some parts because they hardly left the Soviet Bloc. The lack of a fool-hardy American importer doesn't make the East German car any better than the Yugo, however. In many ways, it was a reflection of life in East Germany, with lofty ambitions that were painfully short of realization. The plastic body seemed sleek but inside it was cramped, uncomfortable, and you felt every pebble. The front-wheel-drive was powered by a transverse-mounted, two-stroke engine and required drivers to put oil in the fuel tank — think about the pollution! |

Plymouth Prowler The Plymouth Prowler of the '90s shows just what the designers of the day looked up to in the past, in addition to creating some of their own unique and often bizarre-looking creations. 2003 Hummer H2 The Hummer H2 took the ethos of "bigger is better" and injected it with a healthy dose of Americana. The gas guzzler made 10 miles per gallon, which people quickly realized wasn't a smart purchase in a time of volatile oil prices. A bid to bank on the original H1 (that was used in combat), the H2 didn't have nearly the same capabilities. Many of these sold in good years, but sales plummeted. One Hummer dealership actually was set to fire because of the bad fuel economy by radical environmentalists. |

EAST HAMPTON, NY (April 2, 2021) —Historic Hamptons arts institution Guild Hall (158 Main Street, East Hampton, GuildHall.org) is pleased to announce the artists and events for its landmark 90th season which begins end of May and will feature author Salman Rushdie, American Ballet Theatre, actor and director John Slattery, Emmy-winners Susan Lucci & Joy Behar, 5-time Tony-winner Susan Stroman, Oscar/Tony-winner Mercedes Ruehl, Oscar-winner F. Murray Abraham, Tony-winners Michael Cerveris, Joanna Gleason, Bill Irwin & Cherry Jones, poet Cornelius Eady, artists Julian Schnabel and Laurie Anderson, plus exhibitions with new works from acclaimed American artists Alexis Rockman (Shipwrecks; June 12-July 26) and Robert Longo (A House Divided; Aug 7-Oct 17). This fall at the Academy of the Arts Dinner (Nov 8) at Cipriani Midtown, Guild Hall will include a special 90th anniversary-inspired revue. The first main season event in May will be a virtual poetry performance, Reawakenings, premiering online May 23 at 8pm with Rushdie, Lucci, Abraham, Cerveris, Gleason, Irwin, Jones, Eady, plus Tony-nominees Karen Akers, Tony Roberts & Michael Stuhlbarg, as well as Austin Pendleton, Chris Sarandon, Barbara Feldon & Lynnette R. Freeman. Directed by Paul Hecht, it will feature the cast each performing a favorite poem uniquely/visually paired with a piece of art from Guild Hall’s permanent collection. Additionally, a public work, Full of Noises: a Village Soundwalk has been commissioned in honor of the 90th anniversary, linking the gifts of founder Mary Woodhouse to East Hampton, composed and narrated by sound artist Viv Corringham. In June, Guild Hall will begin its outdoor Play in the Garden theater series with live performances at 8pm for a limited audience/Lawn Circle seats (to also be livestreamed/made available online). The series will showcase works of Edward Albee, Kurt Vonnegut, Wendy Wasserstein and Tom Wolfe (Albee was Artistic Director of Guild Hall’s theater in the 70s, Vonnegut, Wasserstein & Wolfe were also involved with Guild Hall during their careers & all four are members of Guild Hall’s Academy of the Arts). The series will kick off with a Weekend of Wasserstein June 4-5 (a mini-fest of Wendy’s plays, two distinctive evenings filled with smart & shining treats from the voice of one of America’s most beloved playwrights, $100 per Lawn Circle which seats 1-2 people). June 11 will be a staged reading of Happy Birthday, Wanda June by Kurt Vonnegut (his first play which premiered in 1970 and was adapted into a film in 1971; capturing his brilliantly distinct perspective, it’s a darkly humorous, searing examination of the excesses of capitalism, patriotism & American culture in the post-Vietnam War era, $50 per Lawn Circle). The series will continue with Michael Urie and his partner Ryan Spahn starring in Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story July 8-11 ($100 per Lawn Circle), A Night with the Wolfe July 23 celebrating Tom Wolfe, also affectionately known as the Man in the White Suit (the evening will showcase his wit & cultural insights and will include excerpts from his novels, short works, articles & interviews, all told by performers each costumed in Wolfe’s iconic white suit, $100 per Lawn Circle). 5-time Tony-winner and Academy of the Arts member Susan Stroman will direct three unique live theater events Aug 27-29, and Labor Day Weekend Sep 3-4 will be the premiere of new play Crisis in Queens by Academy member Joy Behar ($200 per Lawn Circle). After a bout of cancer, Key West’s Bill Blue is finally on the mend.This concert is dedicated to helping him get on his feet financially after his illness. Bill’s record label, Conch Town Music, gained permission from the City of Key West to use the Coffee Butler Amphitheatre at the Truman Waterfront for a fundraiser concert on Saturday, April 17, 2021.
Renowned in recent years for his Sunday Soundchecks at the Green Parrot and successful concerts at the Key West Theater, Blue has been a fixture of Key West music for more than forty years. He earned his chops with blues legend Arthur ‘Big Boy” Crudup, who wrote “That’s All Right Mama,” made famous by Elvis Presley. After touring with Crudup and opening for Bonnie Raitt, Blue went on his own and finally settled in Key West in the 1980’s. Regular performers at Sloppy Joe’s and the Full Moon Saloon, Bill and his band were the first to play music for John Vagnoni at The Green Parrot.
Blue hadn’t recorded in 25 years when he released the CD “Mojolation” in 2013, followed by “The King of Crazy Town” in 2020.
Always willing to play benefits and lend a hand to his fellow Key Westers, Blue was honored by the City of Key West in 2013 for his service to the community. October 13th was declared “Bill Blue Day.”
This concert is also a community effort. Musicians are donating their time. Ram’s Head Group is donating their ticketing platform and production assistance. And 100% of ticket sales and sponsor donations are going directly to Bill Blue thanks to Conch Town Music.

This is how we "texted" back in the day, hoping not to get caught by the teacher! Ha! Old-timey days. Long before we all had iPhones, the only way to send a message to your friends was to pass them a note. The only problem was, if the teacher caught you passing a note, chances are they would make you read the note to the whole class. Certainly embarrassing if the note was about a boy you liked - or how much of an alcoholic your father was. One secret spy way to pass a note was to write a note on a piece of paper small enough to fit inside the cap of a pen. Then roll up the paper and place it inside of the pen. Then have your friend ask to borrow your pen. Vola! Note safely delivered. |

The Key West City Commission recently honored one of the island city’s prominent writers by proclaiming Tennessee Williams Day. Williams, one of the greatest 20th century American playwrights, lived and worked in Key West from 1949 until his death in 1983. His classics of the American stage earned him two Pulitzer Prizes, a Tony Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and many other literary and theater awards. In addition, his work reached world-wide audiences when his plays were adapted into motion pictures, winning several academy awards. One of his Williams’s major plays, "The Rose Tattoo,” was written, filmed, and premiered in Key West at the San Carlos Institute. March 26th marked Williams’s 110th birthday and was the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Tennessee Williams Museum in Key West. Founder and curator Dennis Beaver and curator Cori Convertito were on hand to receive the proclamation. --------------------------------------------
The crew of the US Coast Guard Cutter William Trump conducted their first cleanup Thursday after adopting Trumbo Road. Dee Dee Green, Key West’s solid waste coordinator met them with grabbers, gloves and buckets. The strip of road between the Coast Guard gate and Caroline Street looks brand new, thanks to these great volunteers!

The City of Key West and the City Commission want to hear your vision of ways to improve the North Roosevelt Blvd corridor. The community – property owners, business owners, residents and visitors – are urged to participate to help envision the island’s future. The City is reviewing all potential options and opportunities, such as increasing landscaping, increasing buffers between commercial and residential, incentivizing smaller and more inviting signage, placing parking behind commercial uses, and more. This this survey will record the public’s opinion on how to improve this crucial corridor and how to forge a path forward for the City and North Roosevelt Blvd.
