If being mostly housebound over the last year has taught us anything, it’s been new ways of connecting. We’ve explored the world virtually, scheduled screen chats with loved ones, and opened our eyes to old injustices and hidden treasures that were around us all along. Our ties to our neighbors – both across the street and across the globe – have never felt more real, and the physical places where we find ourselves seem to matter more than ever, and not at all. For our winter members’ exhibition, we invite artwork about wherever you are – whether it’s the view from your window, or from your mind’s eye.

The City of Key West has partnered with the Monroe County Tourist Development Council to remind visitors and residents that masks are required to be worn in Key West.
The TDC has funded an additional two dozen pole banners destined to be installed in the busiest commercial areas. The tourism council is also helping to finance production of a portion of 10 overhead street banners.
Besides other measures being taken by both the City and the TDC, Key West portable electronic dynamic messaging signs are also set up at key sites to better inform arriving visitors of the city’s strict mask ordinance.
------------------------------------

The date of the virtual lighting of the Key West menorah has been changed to Sunday, December 13th at 5:30 p.m.
To avoid creating a large gathering, the community will be able to enjoy the lighting via Facebook live, available through the City’s official Facebook page. We ask that no one comes to the lighting in person.
Everyone is encouraged to find special ways to replace these traditions in this difficult year, things you can do safely social distanced. If we continue to wash, mask and distance, we’ll be doing these traditions together next year.

Amboseli National Park in Kenya

Amboseli National Park, formerly Maasai Amboseli Game Reserve, is a national park in Kajiado South Constituency in Kajiado County, Kenya. The park is 39,206 hectares in size at the core of an 8,000 km² ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. The local people are mainly Maasai, but people from other parts of the country have settled there attracted by the successful tourist-driven economy and intensive agriculture along the system of swamps that makes this low-rainfall area, average 350 mm, one of the best wildlife-viewing experiences in the world with 400 species of birds including water birds like pelicans, kingfishers, crakes, hamerkop and 47 raptor species.

View toward Mt. Kilimanjaro in Amboseli National Park, Kenya
Near Kenya’s southern border is the 151-square-mile wilderness preserve, Amboseli National Park. It’s part of a larger 3,100-square-mile ecosystem that crosses the border into Tanzania. Within the park, the area around the seasonal Lake Amboseli is known as one of the key places that African elephants gather in the region. Of course, there are other critters here, too, including giraffes, lions, wildebeest, buffalo, zebras, and some 400 bird species. Just across the border from Amboseli towers a landmark that’s hard to miss, even when standing in another country: Mount Kilimanjaro.

Roberta DePiero on Friday presented the City of Key West a copy of the recently published book Isolated Island; the Key West Covid-19 Spring of 2020. DePiero and Carol Tedesco, with the seed money from a grant from the Awesome Foundation, gathered the work of 25 local photographers who, along with local writers and graphic designer Eric Grahl, donated their efforts.
DePiero said she wants the book to be part of the City’s archive of this unprecedented time.
The photos in the book were shot when the Keys underwent a shutdown early in the pandemic. Sales of the book will benefit Sister Season Fund’s COVID-19 relief efforts on behalf of workers in tourist related industries including entertainment, hospitality, lodging, and some retail and guest services.
Photographers contributing to the book are Peter Arnow, Susan Bailey, Michael Blades, Lynne Bentley-Kemp, Joe and Ozlem Berg, Larry Blackburn, Kyle Campbell, Jeffrey Cardenas, Alyson Crean, Roberta DePiero, Ralph DePalma, Heather Dow Todd Feit, Tony Gregory, Connie Groth, Jay Hall, Mark Hedden, Martha Hubbard, Bill Klipp, Linda Klipp, Corey Malcom, Andy Newman, Rob O’Neal, Steve Panariello, Carol Tedesco, and Sharon Wells.
The few remaining copies can be purchased at the Business Guild offices on Duval Street or at the Sister Season offices at 422 Fleming St.

In the photo: City Manager Gregory Veliz, the book’s designer Eric Grahl, Roberta DePiero – who with Carol Tedesco, pulled the whole project together – and Mayor Teri Johnston.

After taking portrait photos of John Lennon's face on the roof of Lennon's New York apartment, photographer Bob Gruen
decided to take more photos for publicity. He had given John a NYC T-shirt a year earlier and with the

be the perfect place to wear it. John went and put it on to
make this now iconic photo.

As Beatles collectors are well aware, the Lennon signed checks one typically comes across are those issued in relation to ' Apple Records ' or ' Lennon Productions ' by two

Up Next More Works from Wyland BUT FIRST additional Info. brought to us from Cricket Desmarais about the BVMPKW (WWW.BVMPKW.ORG ) and their "HeArt Strings Exhibition and Auction" at WWW.TSKW.ORG ; Of Course to Beneift the Bahama Village Music Program

The Studios of Key West hosts Bahama Village Music Program HeArt Strings pop-up exhibit that brings artists and old instruments together for fundraiser

More than a dozen “retired” instruments transformed into works of art by celebrated Key West artists are now on display at The Studios of Key West in support of Bahama Village Music Program. Sales from the pop-up exhibit will be split 50/50 amongst the artists and the island’s only free music education school.

Participating artists include Eric Anfinson, Kassy Burnette, Fran Decker, Cricket Desmarais, Kate Divoll, Kate Fago, Tony Gregory, Ben Harrison, Pam Hobbs, Marlene Koenig, Lauren P. McAloon, Jack McDonald, Jim Salem, Jimm Sherington, and B Lucy Stevens. The artists were invited to transform a “retired” string instrument into a creative masterpiece to be sold at a fixed price selected by them.

Since March 2020, Bahama Village Music Program has had to cancel over a dozen fundraisers, including their 20th Birthday Bash and many annual events like Fats Navarro Day and Sugarloaf Oktoberfest. These annual events bring in much-needed funding for the non-profit program.

The exhibit, sponsored by The Studios, runs until December 24, and unlike traditional exhibits, buyers can take their purchase home immediately, making for great holiday gifts while also supporting artists and the beloved music program.

The comprehensive music school fosters important mentor relationships between local teenage musicians and their students and has taught over 20,000 lessons to more than 2,000 children since 1999. The program has grown to include free summer camps for BVMP students, free dance lessons with Dance Key West, yearly full-tuition scholarships and grants to student teachers to attend the Berklee College of Music’s Aspire: Five-Week Music Performance Intensive, and full-scale musical theater productions with Keys Kids Junior and House of Pan Steel Pan Band at Horace O’Bryant School— inspiring children island-wide to discover the musician within.

The Studios of Key West is open from 12:00pm – 4:00pm Tuesdays through Saturdays. For more information, email BVMP board member Cricket Desmarais at Cricket@bvmpkw.orgBVMP- Celebrating 21 years of free music education. It takes a village.

Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta reunited in 2018
Is there any more powerful high school couple Zuko and Sandy in the 1978 film Grease? Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta's iconic characters stole hearts in their killer dance moves and fast driven cars. Newton-John also shed some light as to why she and Travolta never dated, "I think it was good, because I think it kept the tension there and the chemistry. It might have been a real disaster had we decided to date or we had a falling out or something. So I think it was just as well that it didn't happen."
Ozzy Osbourne is the chestnut Prince of Darkness (1974)
Can we all agree that Ozzy Osbourne looks like a young hippie here more than the Prince of Darkness? Regardless, he will always be remembered with that nickname, performing as the frontman of Black Sabbath. In 1974, they even performed in front of over 200,000 fans at the California Jam. Osbourne left Black Sabbath for a few weeks before rejoining the band to record “Never Say Die.” Unfortunately for big heavy metal fans, he was out of the band for good in 1979.
Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth both look dashing
“Diamond” David Lee Roth got the party started for the Van Halen. As the lead singer, he groomed Van Halen to become a hard rock band that began playing in backyards then ended up headlining stadiums. Of course, it wasn't all him. Van Halen had that pulsating beats and frantic guitar that were astounding to hear. Now you know that before Van Halen became one of the biggest bands in the world, it took a lot of years of hardwork before they ever hit their big break.
The Breakfast Club became closer than ever while filming
Don't you forget about this incredible cast! The 1985 John Hughes film resulted to five actors turning into friends in real life. Shooting The Breakfast Club was so easy going that Molly Ringwald Paul Gleason, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, and Ally Sheedy grew closer together.  When the shoot finally came to an end, the five castmates seemed like they were experiencing separation anxiety. Director John Hughes was to the rescue! He gave each of them a piece of the library’s banister as a memorabilia.
The 1960 Cadillac Eldorado looks more like a boat than a car
Sure, it feels refreshing and heartwarming to see old photos of people, but it's the same feeling with vintage cars. Just take a peek at this 1960 Cadillac Eldorado. It's practically shaped like a boat but totally looks cool to drive. This model would pass as an early version of the Batmobile. As powerful and as dramatic did the Eldorado seem, potential buyers were not fascinate enough. Cadillac then altered the car to make it a little more mainstream by removing the massive fins.
River and younger brother Joaquin Phoenix at home in 1986
Years before River would become a teen idol gone too soon and decades before Joaquin would win an Oscar, they were just young brothers who were the best of friends, too. River would convince Joaquin to dedicate his life appearing on screen. Joaquin shared, "And he said, ‘You’re going to start acting again, this is what you’re going to do. He didn’t ask me, he told me. And I am indebted to him for that because acting has given me such an incredible life."

Surf's up at the beach (1964)
In 1964, most of California had turned into hippies. Except for Southern California. SoCal had leaned kids who wanted to go full tan and hit the beach all the time. Thanks to the Beach Boys' music and films featuring the surfing scene of the region, the water pasttime was becoming a huge thing. Whether it was Huntington Beach, Malibu, or Venice, people would go to get their Vitamin D fix and surfing experience. Hip cats would visit the beaches every weekend they could.

An all American family, The Munsters in 1964
Warning: this photo will inspire you to take a break from Netflix series and watch this 1960s show, The Munster. Once you hear the horror tinged surf song at the beginning of the episode, you will not stop devouring the sitcom. The Munster centers around the monsters living in a “normal” neighborhood. The story is downright wholesome and not scary at all. Every heartwarming episode would actually remind you of the 1957 comedy Leave It To Beaver, because the show was created by the same team.
Well that was fun; That was our 3 Part Special on 60s and 70s Phtographs that took us Back. I'll look in the Stored Files for another Interesting Nostalgic Photographic Feature for the December 21st. Feature.

BIG NEWS! We have worked for months on a COVID plan that would allow us to present theater "live" while ensuring the health and well-being of everyone involved. Our board members agreed that a space we could "control" was a must. We are excited to announce that Fringe will be renting the first floor at the Armory, located at 600 White Street, from the Historic Florida Keys Foundation. This is a big move for us -- in more ways than one. But we believe it's the right move since it lets us present our 2020-21 Main Stage season in a space that accommodates social distancing and all the other appropriate health protocols. We've got lots more great news to announce about our season. We're going to be trying a lot of things, and we hope that you will be there with us ... in whatever way makes you comfortable! 'Fringe at the Armory' will remain Key West's community-focused theater. Now more than ever! www.fringetheater.org.. Photos below from Daaisha Cochran.

TAKE THE TRANSPORTATION MASTER PLAN SURVEY TO HELP PROVIDE FUTURE DIRECTION FOR U.S. 1

Monroe County, FL - Monroe County is in the process of preparing a Transportation Master Plan that will provide future direction for U.S. 1 within Monroe County. Your feedback is vital in helping develop the Transportation Master Plan. Visit us1masterplan.com to find information on the plan, progress on each phase, a public survey, and an interactive map where you can pinpoint areas of concern.

We encourage you to provide as much feedback on your idea of traffic issues (congestion, safety, signals, pedestrian, bicycle, etc.), where these issues are, and possible solutions. (If completing the survey by using a smartphone, use the dropdown arrows for questions 1 & 2 to move forward - it allows you to type in the box but doesn't recognize that to move on.)

The primary objective of this study is to identify transportation needs, develop goals/objectives, and develop an action plan to meet those goals. The action plan will identify potential short-term solutions (1-5 years), mid-term (6-10 years), and long-term solutions (10-20 years). These solutions may include roadway, signal, and signage and marking improvements to address traffic issues and/or multi-modal solutions addressing the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transit.

The more feedback the better. Direct link to the study: https://www.us1masterplan.com/projectsurvey.

MONROE COUNTY, FL – Monroe County has allocated all $1 million in the second round of CARES Act Small Business Grant Program funding to 268 small local businesses that were affected by COVID-19. The County funded $2 million to 527 businesses in both rounds of the program.

In round 2, 159 sole proprietors received $2,500, 86 2-10 employee businesses received $5,000, and 23 11-25 employee businesses received $7,500. Funded businesses included retail, food, galleries, commercial and charter fishing, salons, photographers, property management companies, and fitness centers, among others.

A business that applied but did not receive funding may have had an incomplete application, were not eligible (too many employees, multiple business applications with the same owner), or the application was submitted properly but was later than other complete applications on the first-come, first-serve basis.

Some funding is still being processed, but to view a list of the businesses that received funding, visit www.monroecounty-fl.gov/bizcares.

The Monroe County CARES Act Program is a grant program funded by an allocation to Monroe County from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act through the State of Florida Division of Emergency Management to be used in assisting local governments in the recovery process from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to the $2 million business grant program, approximately $368,000 was distributed for utilities assistance to about 400 commercial and residential customer accounts that were in arrears, $1 million was distributed or set aside for critical needs like food and nonprofit grant assistance, and $1.4 million is being processed for those who applied for the rental and mortgage assistance program.

The County’s Office of Management and Budget compiled the small business assistance grant distribution overview for both rounds of the program. This information can be found on our website.

We Now Start Part 7 of 8 Weeks of showing an AMAZING 120+ Collection of Classic Cars Owned by Jay Leno "Jay Leno's Garage". He also had a CNBC TV Show Featuring his 120 Classic Cars WWW.LENOSGARAGE.COM
97. 1907 White Steam Car
Model Year: 1907
Original Value: $3,500-$4,500*
Current Value: $1,750*
Another antique from Leno’s Garage was the White Steam Car from 1907. This Steam Car gets 30HP, and it debuted on Jay Leno’s Garage in 2012. The White Car was built by The White Company, and it was priced above the Rolls-Royce at the time. The White Company would go on to switch over to gasoline cars a few years after the White Steam Car’s release. The White Steam Car, built in Cleveland, Ohio, was practically a tank. Made of a steel alloy, the Car weighed in at 3,635 pounds. In addition to Leno’s garage, there is another White Steam Car on display at the Henry Ford Museum.
98. 1969 Espada
Model Year: 1969
Original Value: $21,000*
Current Value: $129,515*
Jay Leno’s 1969 Lamborghini Espada was Leno’s choice over a Ferrari 330GTC. He bought the car in the 1980s, picking it over the Ferrari that would later be worth almost a million bucks. Leno chose the Espada because it had more space and horsepower—not to mention, it was $2,500 cheaper than the 330 GTC at the time. Leno restored the Espada, fitting it with a V12. Marcello Gandini was behind the design of the Espada’s unique body, and Gandini was a prominent member of Bertone, a famous auto design house. He was also the brains behind the Bugatti EB110, Countach, Miura, and BMW E12.

99. 1955 Buick Roadmaster
Model Year: 1955
Original Value: $1,910*
Current Value: $22,300*
Leno purchased his “Rosebud” (a Citizen Kane reference, for those who don’t know), a 1955 Buick Roadmaster, when he was a struggling comic and a mechanic. He bought the Roadmaster in 1972 for a measly $350, far below the car’s original list price. The Roadmaster has been on Leno’s Garage a couple times. The Roadmaster, which Hot Rod Network described as the comedian’s “First Love,” was a staple of the Buick lineup from 1936 until 1958 and again from 1991 until 1996. The Roadmaster’s ’55 iteration had some new-and-improved features, such as gold accents, bars on its hubcaps, a new hood ornament, and more.
100. 1906 Stanley Steamer Vanderbilt Cup Racer
Model Year: 1906
Original Value: $600*
Current Value: $4.09 million*
Jay Leno’s 1906 Stanley Steamer Vanderbilt Cup Racer is still drivable, as evidenced by a 2012 episode of Leno’s Garage. Though he’s upgraded it with some more modern features to make it drivable, it is still in pretty good condition. The Cup Racer set the world record in 1906 for the fastest mile-time: 28.2 seconds. It also set a speed record that year, reaching a top speed of 127MPH. The 1906 Cup Racer took twenty minutes to get moving. First, the driver had to heat the pilot. Then, the driver had to open the fuel. After the liquid hit the pilot, it would turn to gas

101. 1920s Rever
Model Year: 1920s
Original Value: $345*
Current Value: $375*
In order to keep his Revere from completely breaking down, Leno’s mechanics had to cast a special radiator shell. The Revere is still part of Leno’s garage, and he featured it on his show in recent years. Leno’s Revere is from the 1920s. If “Revere” doesn’t sound familiar, that’s because it had a short lifespan. The Revere Motor Car Corporation was one of the first supercar manufacturers in America. Adolph Monsen toured Logansport, Indiana in the first bare chassis in August of 2017. The Revere marque, founded 100 years ago, was described by Bonham’s as “one of the finest…cars of its time.

EMERGENCY DIRECTIVE FROM THE CITY OF KEY WEST PROCLAIMED ON 12/3/2020 IN EFFECT THURSDAY 12/31/2020 10PM TO SUNDAY JANUARY 3, 2021

Key West Mayor Teri Johnston, after an extensive discussion at Thursday’s City Commission meeting, has enacted an emergency directive providing for a curfew in order to avoid a public health emergency during the New Year’s holiday.
The directive reads: “Commencing on Thursday, December 31, 2020 at 10 p.m. and terminating on Sunday, January 3, 2021, at 6:00 a.m., a curfew is hereby imposed for the City of Key West, effective from 10 p.m. each night through 6 a.m. the next morning. All non-essential businesses shall close on or before 10 p.m. each night. Persons shall be in their residences or lodging establishments no later than 10:30 p.m. each night. During the period of such curfew, no person shall make use of any street or sidewalk for any purpose, except police, fire rescue, first responder, medical, health care, media, and utility repair service personnel.”
The curfew will not apply to: people returning directly to their homes from work at essential establishments or going directly to work at essential establishments from their homes; people making deliveries from essential establishments; people walking their dogs within 250 feet of their residences; and those traveling to or from any religious service.
---------------------------------------

Key West Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission proclaimed Dec. 21st National Homeless Persons Memorial Day during the December City Commission meeting.
For the past 21 years, the community has gathered to remember those men, women and children who have died homeless in Monroe County with this proclamation, setting aside this longest night of the year in their honor.
On Monday, December 20th the Florida Keys Outreach Coalition will coordinate a virtual memorial service to remember the homeless individuals who have died in Key West and Monroe County over the past year. Their remains will be interred in the FKOC vault in the Key West Cemetery.
Stephanie Kaple, Executive Director of the Florida Keys Outreach Coalition, accepted the proclamation. She encouraged the community to tune in to the FKOC Facebook page to remember those who have died.
“Hopefully,” said Kaple, “someday soon we won’t have to have these memorials anymore.”
The day is set aside to remember those who have died homeless because it is the longest night of the year. While many of us pass that long night in a bed with a roof over our head, says Kaple, others suffer it sleeping on the streets.
In the attached photo: Mayor Teri Johnston, FKOC Executive Director Stephanie Kaple, and Vice Mayor Sam Kaufman.

Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission last night commended A.H. of Monroe County, Inc. on the completion of Marty’s Place, the new affordable housing complex near Key West High School.

“A.H. of Monroe County, Inc, formerly known as Aids Help continues to lead by example in creating new truly affordable housing for our community in Key West,” reads the commendation.

Marty’s Place provides 47 units for members of the community – many with disabilities – earning less than $42,000 a year with an affordable apartment.

Scott Pridgen, executive director of A.H. Monroe, accepted the commendation, noting that the organization has expanded its reach as needs in the community have expanded.

“This success is an example of what our community organizations can achieve in providing relief to the hundreds of community members and our workforce who remain on waitlists for affordable housing within the lower income categories,” Mayor Johnston wrote in the commendation.

NOVEMBER 19, 2020
The Key West City Commission today amended the City’s mask ordinance in light of the current spike in Covid-19 cases.
After an in-depth discussion, the commission voted unanimously to remove an exemption that had allowed the removal of masks outdoors. The City now requires the wearing of masks any time a resident or a visitor steps out of their residence, they must wear a mask regardless of the ability to social distance
“We’re trying to regain control of our more crowded outdoor areas,” City Manager Greg Veliz told the commission.
During Tuesday’s meeting, the commission discussed creating mask zones for the busiest areas. However, City Attorney Shawn Smith said zoning would create a patchwork that could lead to inconsistency as well as creating a difficulty for enforcement.
To read the ordinance in its entirety, go to www.cityofkeywest-fl.gov.

We Now Continue with Part 7 of 8 Weeks of showing an AMAZING 120+ Collection of Classic Cars Owned by Jay Leno "Jay Leno's Garage". He also had a CNBC TV Show Featuring his 120 Classic Cars WWW.LENOSGARAGE.COM
102. 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost
Model Year: 2011
Original Value: $246,500*
Current Value: $104,937*
One of several Rolls-Royces that Leno owns, the 2011 Ghost became a part of the Leno garage in 2010. The 2011 Ghost is the least expensive, smallest sedan from Rolls-Royce, though it doesn’t look that way to the average spectator. The Ghost, which Rolls-Royce describes as the epitome of “beauty in restraint,” was first produced in 2009. It has had a model year ever since, with each Ghost rolling off the line at the Goodwood Plant in West Sussex, England. The Ghost got a new generation in 2019, when it was first spotted testing. The next gen was officially revealed in September of 2020.

103. 1957 Porsche 356A Outlaw
Model Year: 1957
Original Value: $3,215*
Current Value: $255,000*
Debuting on Jay Leno’s Garage in 2014, the 1957 Porsche 356A Outlaw was owned and “finely rebuilt” (according to AutoBlog.com) by Chuck Olenyk. The Outlaw was transformed from a mere coupe into a speed demon, thanks to Olenyk and his team. The concept of the Outlaw Porsche dates back to the 1950s. Dean Jeffries, one of the pioneers of vehicle customization, modified his Porsche 356 Carrera at the Barris’ body shop in Lynwood, California. This was the first modified Porsche. The “Outlaw” nickname may have been more recent, but the idea of modifying and chopping up a Porsche is decades old.

104. 1941 Plymouth Deluxe Special Business Coupe
Model Year: 1941
Original Value: $760*
Current Value: $6,850*
Leno’s 1941 Plymouth Deluxe Special Business Coupe is bullet-proof. He debuted the Coupe on his show back in 2012. The man who gave Leno the Coupe was called “Fred the Kingpin,” possibly explaining the need for the bulletproofing. The Business Coupe was a special Plymouth trim. The Special Deluxe was a top-of-the-line variation on that trim. The pre-Pearl Harbor Business Coupes were all assembled in Highland Park, Michigan at the Lynch Road Assembly. As far as the Deluxe trim went, it was only around for four years (from 1946 until 1950). In Canada, the Deluxe was called the Dodge Kingsway.

.
105. 1975 Plymouth Duster HEMI
Model Year: 1975
Original Value: $2,500*
Current Value: $32,900*
Previously owned by Paul Annunziata before Leno bought it, the 1975 Plymouth Duster HEMI was in excellent condition when it became a part of Jay Leno’s garage (and it was featured on the show in 2012). The 1975 Duster was customized and got 1,000 horsepower. The original creator of the Duster passed away after gifting it to Leno. Compared to other models, the Plymouth was short-lived. It had model years from 1970 until 1976, and the semi-fastback coupe was designed to compete with the Vega and the Beetle. The 1975 Dusters had a new grille affixed with the Plymouth tripoint spear at the center.

106. 1918 Pierce Arrow Model 66
Model Year: 1918
Original Value: $7,200*
Current Value: $600,000-$800,000*
Jay Leno described his 1918 Pierce Arrow Model 66 as a “class act.” The 66 is larger than average Pierce Arrow models, and it was the last example to roll off the factory lineup. The engine in the 66 was a 14-liter. Also, Jay Leno’s Model 66 is bulletproof. Pierce Arrow is now defunct, but it lives on in 2017 episodes of Jay Leno’s Garage. The Pierce Arrow’s engine was larger than that of any other passenger car. The 66 was part of the “Nickel Era” of automaking, which was a period where the chrome on cars was actually made of nickel. It lasted from the late 1910s until the early 1930s.

We continue with with Part 8 of 8 fromJay Leno's Garage in the December 21st. Issue

ALYSON CREAN CITY OF KEY WEST COMMUNICATIONS

----------------------------

The City of Key West has partnered with the Monroe County Tourist Development Council to remind visitors and residents that masks are required to be worn in Key West.
The TDC has funded an additional two dozen pole banners destined to be installed in the busiest commercial areas. The tourism council is also helping to finance production of a portion of 10 overhead street banners.
Besides other measures being taken by both the City and the TDC, Key West portable electronic dynamic messaging signs are also set up at key sites to better inform arriving visitors of the city’s strict mask ordinance.
------------------------------------------------------

The holiday season is in full swing, and that means people are out shopping for gifts. The Key West Police Department wants to remind everyone to take extra care to avoid becoming a crime victim. Put gifts in the trunk or somewhere out of sight as you go from store to store.
With so much online shopping, people should also try and avoid leaving packages sitting out in plain sight. Most of these companies provide very accurate updates for delivery times, so if possible, try and get them in so as not to tempt porch bandits.
Finally, if you’re buying on Craig’s List or an online yard sale, remember that the Key West Police Department’s open air lobby is available 24 hours a day for these exchanges. By conducting these transactions at the police department, both buyers’ and sellers’ privacy is protected.
The Key West Police Station is located at 1604 North Roosevelt Blvd. The open-air lobby in front is open 24 hours a day. The Sheriff’s Office is also offering the lobbies of its substations and headquarters building as safe zones for residents making online transactions or to anyone buying or selling in person.

THE CITY OF KEY WEST HAS A NEW MASK ORDINANCE

About South Florida Symphony Orchestra
South Florida Symphony Orchestra, founded by Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso 23 years ago, provides exciting and enriching cultural experiences through Masterworks concerts with internationally renowned guest solists in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Key West. Guided by the belief that music is pivotal to community engagement, SFSO also brings vibrancy and strengthens public commitment to the arts through its transformative outreach and educational programming, including Symphony in the Schools for culturally underserved students.

After impressive career successes, Maestra Alfonso returned “home” to Key West, Florida, in 1997 to make a dream come true: bringing orchestral music, with all its associated educational and cultural benefits, to the southernmost island in the continental United States. In late 1998, with huge community support, the Key West Symphony made its debut. Subsequently renamed, the South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) is the only professional orchestra that performs full seasons in Key West, Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Award-winning Maestra Alfonso has established herself as a dynamic musical force. She is one of the few female conductors in the world. Her creativity has established SFSO as a leader in innovative collaborations, which are evolving the classical music art form and attracting new audiences.

VIRTUAL CONCERTS : DUE TO SPACE CONSTRAINTS PLEASE GO TO THE WEBSITE FOR THE COMPLETE INFO. ON PURCHASING THESE VIRTUAL CONCERTS

KEY WEST, Florida Keys — The South Florida Symphony, born in Key West 23 years ago, is making its 2020-21 season available to classical music aficionados around the globe by staging a series of all-virtual concerts featuring world-renowned performers.
The virtual series, consisting of six Masterworks concerts beginning Saturday, Nov. 21, protects both audiences and musicians from the risk of coronavirus transmission. Concerts are to be performed live without an audience and recorded by expert directors and sound engineers for broadcast to music lovers, continuing the landmark orchestra’s tradition of innovation and dynamic offerings.
“This new format will provide the audience with a ‘front row seat,’ giving them an intimate and thrilling view of the musicians and their instruments,” said Maestra Sebrina Maria Alfonso, who debuted the symphony in Key West in 1998 and subsequently spearheaded its development into a South Florida cultural powerhouse.

An Amazing On-Line and Hardcopy Selection of Books; many from Keys Authors

Key West Normal:
The Whole Ball of Whacks
The Bric Wahl Mysteries (Book Three)
$3.99 ebook, $14.95 paperback

Russel Bricklin “Bric” Wahl has decided to dial his manic life down a little. Bric and his buddy John “Rumpy” Rumpendorfer have joined to convert his millions in gold treasure by buying a peaceful and historic mansion and converting it into a luxurious adults-only bed & breakfast with a clothing-optional pool and a staff that makes Nobody’s Inn the perfect Key West hideaway. But a haunted house with three ghosts and a huge, antique, emerald-studded cross from the 1715 Spanish plate fleet wrecks make life at the mansion far from uneventful. Treasure seekers, both legitimate and crooked, old family members, and a few new characters keep things interesting.

Dancing Nowhere
$3.99 ebook, $14.95 paperback

Many readers follow John Holt’s writing about the beauty and dangers and enjoyment of his life in the northwest … but fewer know the poetic side of this popular outdoors writer. Here he speaks with verse, extolling the wonders of the world around him. After declaring himself plain crazy, he rhapsodizes about the high country, lonely places, being streamside, medicine rocks, chilly creeks, and big fish. He extols being a kid in Montana, life at 3 a.m., Yellowstone, small towns, long gone friends, and truth. He even shares a few fish tales. This is poetry for those who look at nature and the world around us with wonder … and reality.

Dengue can present as a severe flu-like illness with severe muscle aches and pain, fever and sometimes a rash. Usually, there are no respiratory symptoms. Symptoms of Dengue will appear within 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Dengue fever is not contagious but is transmitted by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito.
The emergence of these Dengue cases reinforces the importance for the public to prevent insect bites and to take basic precautions to help limit exposure. These measures include intact windows and screens and the use of air conditioning, keeping the area around your residence free from containers that collect water, wearing protective clothing and the appropriate use of insect repellents.
For more information, visit www.floridahealth.gov/dengue or www.keysmosquito.org. If you
are experiencing any symptoms or have additional questions, please call DOH-Monroe at

CFK marine science director earns state recognition

The Association of Florida Colleges awarded Lana Gaspari, The College of the Florida Keys’ Director of Marine Science and Technology, with the 2020 Career and Professional Employee of the Year award. Gaspari was selected from dozens of nominated employees from the 28 state colleges in Florida.
Hired by CFK in 2012, Gaspari first served as an instructor in the Diving Business and Technology program for four years. In her current position, as the Director of Marine Science and Technology, she assists the dean with the operational oversight of five academic programs in the division of Marine Science and Technology. She collaborates with full-time faculty and supervises adjunct faculty, dive facilities management, boat crews, and student lab assistants. She is also responsible for CFK’s fleet of vessels and the administration of their operation. Additionally, she has played a key role in the establishment and growth of CFK’s Summer Adventure Camps program, which serves almost 300 children each summer.
“Lana is incredibly student-centric. She routinely searches for ways to meet student needs and finds opportunities for student success,” said Jack Seubert, CFK Dean of Marine Science and Technology. “She frequently meets with students to help them make their academic plans and find ways to save time and money. Lana also seeks grant and donation funding to support industry certificate exams, especially for underrepresented student populations.”
Gaspari holds a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology and a master’s degree in Career and Technical Education. She is a Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) Course Director and Specialty Instructor Trainer, a Diver’s Alert Network (DAN) Diving Emergency Management Provider Instructor Trainer, and an Emergency First Response (EFR) Instructor Trainer.
“I believe that individuals are only as good as the team they work with,” said Gaspari. “I am fortunate to work with a team of hard-working, student-centric, dedicated, and passionate people. We are a team, at a small school, that accomplishes such big things.”

What is COVID-19
COVID-19 is a newly emerging disease that has a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness.
Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposureto the virus. Symptoms include but are not limited to:
  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
How is it Spread?
  • Person-to-person and between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
  • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.
  • These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
  • COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.
  • Everyone plays a part in lowering the impact within our communities and workplaces – taking every day preventative actions helps to impede the spread of respiratory diseases such as COVID-19.
  • Preventative actions include:
  • Washing your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
  • Staying home when you are sick. This message cannot be emphasized enough.
  • Employees who have symptoms of acute respiratory illness are recommended to stay home and not come to work until they are free of fever (100.4° F or greater using an oral thermometer), signs of a fever, and any other symptoms for at least 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing or other symptom-altering medicines (e.g. cough suppressants). Employees should notify their supervisor and stay home if they are sick.
What do I do if I think I’m sick with COVID-19?
If you are infected with COVID-19 we suggest that you call your primary healthcare provider to get information on what you should be doing to protect yourself and your family from COVID-19. The CDC recommends for those who are ill with COVID-19 to stay home except to get medical care:
Stay home. Most people with COVID-19 have mild illness and can recover at home without medical care. Do not leave your home, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas.
Take care of yourself. Get rest and stay hydrated. Take over-the-counter medicines, such as acetaminophen, to help you feel better.
Stay in touch with your doctor. Call before you get medical care. Be sure to get care if you have trouble breathing, or have any other emergency warning signs, or if you think it is an emergency.
Avoid public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.
As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away from other people and pets in your home. If possible, you should use a separate bathroom. If you need to be around other people or animals in or outside of the home, wear a cloth face covering.
Monitor your symptoms
  • Symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever and cough.
  • Follow care instructions from your healthcare provider and local health department. In Monroe county we call daily to those who have COVID-19 to help monitor their symptoms and well-being.

AS DISCUSSED AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS ISSUE; HERE IS Another LONGER ARTICLE ON COVID-19 from CDC

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released another new COVID-19 guideline, this time as it pertains to those who are considered in “close contact” with someone who is infected with the coronavirus.
The CDC previously defined close contact as being within 6 feet of someone infected with COVID-19 for at least 15 minutes or more. The updated guidance now defines close contact as being within 6 feet of someone with the virus for a cumulative total of 15 minutes (or more) over a 24-hour period.
The updated guidance came along with a report on Wednesday that examined cases of the virus in a Vermont prison. Health experts found a prison employee was infected with COVID-19 in August after 22 interactions with people who ended up testing positive for the virus later on. The interactions totaled 17 minutes over the course of the employee’s shift, and at least one of the asymptomatic individuals infected the employee.

The report stated that the prison worker wore protective gear, including a cloth face mask. The infected individuals also wore masks during most of their interactions, but there were several incidents where they did not. Those interactions took place in a prison cell doorway and a recreation room.
So, aside from this being somewhat alarming (like everything involving COVID-19), what exactly does this new definition mean for us in general? Below is a quick breakdown.

THE 15-MINUTE MARK ISN’T THE BE-ALL, END-ALL FOR A COVID-19 INFECTION.
Don’t think of this timing as a strict countdown, like Cinderella before midnight. The coronavirus can still be transmitted in a shorter or longer amount of time. The amount or intensity of exposure are what matters here, according to Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security and an infectious disease expert.
“There was nothing ever ‘magical’ about 15 minutes, that was just what the epidemiology was showing when most transmission occurred,” Adalja told HuffPost. “There are instances where a person has multiple contacts that are less than 15 minutes over a course of a day. That puts them at significant risk for contracting the virus.”
THE NEW DEFINITION WILL HAVE THE BIGGEST EFFECT ON AREAS LIKE SCHOOLS AND OFFICES.
The pool of individuals considered close contacts will get a lot bigger with this new guidance ― especially when you consider interactions in schools and businesses, Caitlin Rivers, an epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told The Washington Post.
“It’s easy to accumulate 15 minutes in small increments when you spend all day together — a few minutes at the water cooler, a few minutes in the elevator, and so on,” Rivers said. “I expect this will result in many more people being identified as close contacts.”

Adalja noted that it may be a challenge for workplaces to figure out how this fits in to their day-to-day function. You don’t want people to be overly worried and disrupt workflow as a result, and you also don’t want to dismiss it and put people at risk.
“I think that is going to be difficult trying to operationalize this,” he said. “Because the goal is not to have a self-quarantine reflexively. You want to be able to have only those people who are actually at significant risk self-quarantine. So the challenge is going to be taking that new guidance and determining how it applies to an individual person.”

THIS CAN IMPACT CONTACT TRACING AS WELL.
The new guidance certainly adds a challenge to tracing COVID-19 exposure. The increase of the pool means there’s more people to contact and, depending on their level of exposure, more people to request to isolate or quarantine.
“Hopefully the CDC provides further technical guidance to state and local health departments to help them implement this so that when their contact tracers are doing these types of investigations, they have a clear way of learning how to delineate who is a significant exposure versus someone who is not,” Adalja said.
MOST OF ALL, THIS UNDERSCORES THE FACT THAT EVERYONE SHOULD WEAR A DAMN MASK.
We keep hearing this advice for a reason: Face masks are essential. Data has repeatedly shown that wearing one can significantly reduce the spread of COVID-19, and their use is applicable to this new guidance as well.
“If you’re wearing a face covering, that’s not really considered a significant exposure,” Adalja said. In other words, if you’re around someone who is sick and you’re both wearing masks, it’s less of a risk ― the 15-minute mark aside.
“This emphasizes social distancing and face coverings and the need to do that,” along with avoiding larger crowds and practicing good hand hygeine, Adalja added.
Experts are still learning about COVID-19. The information in this story is what was known or available as of publication, but guidance can change as scientists discover more about the virus. Please check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the most updated recommendations.

HERE IS THE THIRD ARTICLE I'VE COPIED AND PASTED IT'S FROM YAHOO NEWS AND DISCUSSES THE WAY THAT THE VACCINE WILL BE DISTRIBUTED + at the END OF THIS ARTICLE ARE VERY IMPORTANT LINKS TO GIVE YOY A WEALTH OF INFORMATION ON THIS PANDEMIC

DECEMBER 5, 2020
Here's how the COVID-19 vaccines will be tracked and distributed, expert says
With the approval of two COVID-19 vaccines looming, the U.S. government has begun releasing information about how they will be distributed — and, perhaps more important, tracked. The Food and Drug Administration reportedly plans to meet about the first vaccine candidate, made by Pfizer and BioNTech, on Dec. 10, and the second, made by Moderna, on Dec. 17.
The two vaccines have proved more than 90 percent effective in phase III clinical trials and are expected to be approved within days of the meetings. If all goes according to plan, health care personnel and nursing home residents — both of whom have been deemed the top priority for vaccination by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — may be receiving them as soon as the third week in December.
The process of vaccinating this group, and the remaining hundreds of millions of Americans, will be no easy feat. Both vaccines rely on messenger RNA, a new technology that’s believed to be safer than other vaccine types but requires two doses. The doses of Pfizer’s vaccine must be received 21 days apart; Moderna’s must be spaced 28 days apart. In order to help Americans keep track, the Department of Defense will issue “vaccine record cards,” to record which type of vaccine was received and when.
But that’s not the only plan to assist in safely vaccinating Americans. To help explain the process, Yahoo Life spoke with Dr. Carolyn B. Bridges, associate director for adult immunization at the Immunization Action Coalition, a nonprofit that works in partnership with the CDC to educate medical professionals and the general public about vaccines. Here’s what you need to know.
Vaccine record cards are not a new concept and should be considered a backup
“Shot cards have been around for decades,” says Bridges. “So this is kind of your low-tech way to keep track of your immunizations.” The cards, which the DOD released an image of this week, will come as part of a kit that each institution offering vaccinations will hand out. Bridges recommends taking a picture of the card as well as storing it in your wallet — but notes that it’s intended principally as a safeguard.
“People who are agreeing to be COVID-19 vaccine providers will be entering information into their state or city jurisdiction’s immunization information system or vaccine registry,” she says. “So there will also be an electronic record — and of course if you’re getting it at your doctor’s office or your pharmacy, they’ll also be in your medical record. But sometimes electronic systems go down, and it’s really nice to have a backup written piece of information that the patient can keep track of as well.”
The CDC will also offer an after-vaccination health checker and reminder called V-SAFE
Bridges says providers will be required to report any serious side effects, but the CDC also plans to give Americans the option of reporting any adverse effects from the vaccine through a text-based app called V-SAFE. “It’s an additional system that will be available to the public and people who get vaccinated to participate in,” says Bridges. “They’ll not only be assessing how you are feeling and monitoring side effects, but sending out reminders of when it is time for the second dose.”
On its website, the CDC describes V-SAFE as “a new smartphone-based, after-vaccination health checker for people who receive COVID-19 vaccines,” adding that it will consist of web surveys and text messages to check in on vaccine recipients. Live follow-up phone calls will be held with anyone experiencing major side effects, and a report will be filed through the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). V-SAFE will be an important way to trace the safety of the vaccine, for which long-term data is not available.
The cards will be part of a larger kit sent to providers, which will include pharmacists
On its website, the DOD says the vaccine record cards will be just one part of a larger kit sent to providers, one that includes syringes, needles, alcohol pads and masks. Bridges says the number of each product will correspond with how many vaccines the institution is planning to give out.
Although she admits that distributing the COVID-19 vaccine at such a large scale will be difficult, she says both nurses and pharmacists are prepared. “Immunizations are a routine part of our medical system and something pharmacists do all year round,” says Bridges. “So there’s a lot of experience and knowledge about what needs to happen to have a successful immunization program.”
