Very excited to share the progress with the #STEM program at the Florida Sea Base in Summerland Key. Here the Boy Scouts of America are showcasing coral restoration while visiting the waterfront facility. Today, I got to work with the staff and interns performing micro fragmentation techniques to prepare corals for the tanks. We began a few months ago building the facility and have come so far. With these new corals, and knowledge, the team here can teach the campers at this facility about coral restoration with hands on experiences. Programs like the one at the site, and partnerships with amazing groups like the Boy Scouts of America are how we will be able to turn the tide of our oceans.

The Tropic Cinema is kicking off its 7th annual 72-Hour Film Challenge on August 22! Get your cast and crew together and join the fun!

The kickoff will start promptly at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 22; filmmakers will learn the lines, props and other themes that are required. From there, it's go time. In mid-June, a group of watercolor enthusiasts met each night at the beach, just before sunset, with paints, brushes and open imaginations. Led by beloved Key West-New York artist Susan Sugar, the students learned new ways of observing the ephemeral shapes and transitory moods of the evening sky. Having originally trained as dancer, Sugar's work is deeply influenced by movement, and her paintings are imbued with a sense of musicality and rhythm. A selection of student watercolors will be shown alongside one of Susan's own in the Sanger Gallery.
The exhibition will feature work by the "Solstice Sisters" Elizabeth Chamberlain, Cricket Desmarais, Natalia Duke, Elizabeth Hanes, Frances Lee Larkin, Kathy Letarte, Colleen McIntyre, Marcy Moyer, Morgan Ridler, Robin Robinson, Susan Seroskie, Emma Starr, and Rita Troxel.

On view to the public is a restoration project of a large-scale wooden sculpture by the beloved community member, Jon McIntosh. "Tosh" was a renowned designer, illustrator, and painter, and beloved member of the island arts community. Tosh was an accomplished sculptor as well, and his 15-foot-tall palm-tree pencil sculpture was one of the standouts of the 2011 Sculpture Key West exhibit at Fort Zachary Taylor.
Working on a mostly volunteer basis, local sculptor Craig Gray will restore the palm-tree pencil sculpture, and plans to bring it back to its original glory over the next few months. Having first met Tosh at The Studios of Key West in 2011, Gray quickly grew close to the fellow sculptor, and considered him a good friend and mentor. The Studios of Key West is pleased to host the first stage of the sculpture's restoration this summer, allowing the public an opportunity to see a part of the process. Materials for the restoration of the sculpture will be purchased by a Special Project Grant from the Florida Keys Council of the Arts.

Storm of the Century
The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 Revised Edition
Willie Drye will be discussing the new edition of his classic book,
Storm of the Century: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935
and signing copies on September 26 at the Customs House Museum in Key West. The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore has this to say about it: "A scenario similar to the 1935 hurricane is one of my biggest fears as a forecaster today. This is a haunting and very possible scenario in coastal areas that have seen exponential growth since this monster. Willie Drye's book relives that 1935 horror and reminds us how breathtaking and unforgiving paradise can be."
Storm of the Century
is considered the definitive story of what is still the most powerful hurricane to make U.S. landfall. The revised and expanded edition includes new information about the hurricane and the people who were caught in it and a new chapter about Hurricane Irma. The Labor Day hurricane's 200 mph winds and 20-foot storm surge devastated the Upper Keys on September 2, 1935, killing more than 400 people, including about 260 World War I veterans living in beachfront work camps and working on a construction project. Marathon Yacht Club
MYCEF brings Sailing back to the Middle Keys with the Mixer-In-the-Middle Regatta.
Marathon Yacht Club Education Foundation/Middle Keys Sailing held the first regatta in decades for Marathon, Saturday, July 20th on the azure waters off 33rd Street, with a pool party for skippers and crew at The Marathon Yacht Club. Ten knot winds greeted sailors on the flat, warm waters of the Gulf. Early threatening thunderstorms failed to materialize as the sailing went on uninterrupted throughout the afternoon on two overlapping modified Olympic courses. Twenty boats in multiple classes under twenty feet vied for the coveted crown of Sir or Dame Mix-Master, complete with a side mounted ball cap. Sailors came from all corners of Monroe County to participate in this pre-season regatta to benefit youth sailing education. Young and adult alike sailed alongside each other in a series of 5 races. Racing was fast and furious, with different classes mixing it up on the water. Tricky currents, wind shifts, and a difficult racecourse challenged sailors' skills to the end, with many races decided within a few seconds.

During the heat of summer, smelly garbage bins can be a neighborhood nuisance. Here are some tips to help keep the island smelling fresh.
Residents and businesses in Key West can call Waste Management, 305-296-8297, to swap out a dirty cart for a clean cart once a year at no charge. Additional exchanges are $30. In addition, the City's Solid Waste Coordinator Dee Dee Green has some of the following tips:
Keep the lid closed. If you have too much garbage for one cart, consider buying an extra garbage can with a lid at local department store or placing extra garbage in a black plastic bag that is tied shut. Pickup quantities are unlimited as long as the trash is in a cart, can or heavy-duty plastic bag.
No loose garbage should be in the cart. Use a paper, plastic or reuse old product contain garbage. Tie up before placing in your garbage cart.
Double bag wet and smelly stuff. If cleaning fish, consider placing fish waste in freezer until garbage day. Wash garbage and recycle carts with hot water and vinegar. Please do this in the grass or yard when possible.

Add baking soda to bottom of cart after each pickup.
If the once-a-week pickup is not working for your household, and second weekly garbage pickup can be arranged by calling Waste Management for $20 a month.
As a reminder, City Code allows residents to place all solid waste containers at the curb, not blocking the sidewalk, after 4:00 pm the day before pickup service and the containers must be brought back onto your property by 8:00pm the day of service.

Next Feature
The Key West City Commission this week lauded the Key West Lady Conchs 8U and 14U Travel Softball Teams as they finished a remarkable 2019 season by each winning the State Championship for their division during the USSSA South Florida State Softball Tournament in June.
The 8U team captured the state title by going undefeated in the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record. The 14U team went 6-1, including five straight shutout victories in bringing their state title home to Key West.
"These young athletes illustrate what a team can accomplish together with hard work, dedication and self-confidence," reads the proclamation setting aside a day in honor of the teams. "It is with great pride that we congratulate and applaud the 8U champions: Summer Bailey, Charley Bracher, Liana Brown, Kaleaya Dickerson, Jaelyn Estevez, Campbell Fischer, Arianna Garcia, Carlie Hamlin, Lucy Katz, Chloe Kongos, A'Aliyah Mcleod, Gabriella Pichardo and Evaline Zanetti and the 14U champions: Emily Bracher, Cheyenne Carr, Ty Marie Cervantes, Isabella Franco, Ku'uleilani Haia, Scarlet Niles, Madelyn Perusse, Caroline Smith, Montunique Van Staden, Sophia Wardlow and Trecia Whetstone."
City Attorney Shawn Smith, a long-time coach of the league, noted "it is truly remarkable that the youngest set of athletes and the oldest set of athletes in our league are bringing home championships."
He commended the hard work of the young women as well as the amazing support of the parents and sponsors.
Following the accolades in the commission chambers, the teams boarded Conch Trains for a victory parade around the island.

In Monroe County, 54% of families with children cannot afford life's basic necessities. Many of these children begin the school year without school supplies such as pencils, backpacks, books, and other items they need to succeed in school. United Way of the Florida Keys' Stuff the Bus program provides school supplies for these children, ensuring they have the tools to excel this academic year.
Working closely with the Monroe County School District, each school uses the funds raised to purchase exactly the items their students need. Every dollar collected for Stuff the Bus goes directly toward purchasing supplies. Donations to Stuff the Bus are being accepted through August 31.

The Nursery at the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden will be offering native trees, shrubs and vines featuring Everglades tomatoes for sale from 9am to noon on Saturday, August 17, 2019. Everglades tomatoes have been recently propagated by nursery volunteers as well as 161 species of plants bringing the inventory to more than 1,500 plants which attract butterflies and birds Key West Tropical Forest members receive a 15% discount. All proceeds directly benefit the Garden's conservation program.

The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden on Stock Island is seeking volunteers to help with the Nursery, Garden and general office help. No experience necessary and training is provided. Volunteer hours apply toward Community Service for students, City, County & State Programs. Womankind Big Top Bash fundraiser seeks artist amBRAsaddors to make decorated bras for annual BraZaar auction
Are you a glue-gun guru or an artist with a knack for fashion? Step right up and be part of the greatest show on earth by submitting your titillating, one-of-a-kind decorated bra to help support Womankind with their upcoming "Big Top Bash" BraZaar, an annual fundraiser that benefits Keys women and the people who love them with affordable healthcare at the nonprofit medical center. This year's high-flying fundraiser with a Big Top motif set to parade down the three-ringed catwalk Thursday, October 17 from 7pm-10pm at Key West Theater featuring a pre-auction welcome with sweet treats and libations, a high-energy, fast-moving live auction with models hired by Womankind, a dazzling ringmaster of ceremonies, circus-style performances, games played by unsuspecting guests, spectacular surprises, hilarious booby prizes, and an online silent auction of additional decorated bra designs that opens for bidding Friday, October 11. Artists' designs will be blind juried, with accepted submissions entered in the event's live and silent auctions. Artists whose designs are selected for the live auction will receive fa complimentary event ticket to watch their bra be modeled down the 16-foot runway. The bra with the highest live auction bid and the audience favorite chosen through "voting with dollars" will win fabulous "Breast in Show" and "Most Mammarable" prizes.
Since its inception in 2007, artists' participation has helped the event net over $120,000 to help provide hundreds of women in need with free or affordable services. Deadline for submissions is Tuesday, October 1st. Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. Another selling point is that the calendar of events will provide useful information that can be used for scheduling. Any company who is having a special event can look at the global calendar and avoid clashing times/dates with other organizations. This also allows them to attract more people to their events by scheduling their own events when other organizations aren't scheduled.

Key West Art & Historical Society Invites Public to Experience Free Key West Historic Marker Tours
Key West Art & Historical Society invites locals and tourists to experience a multi-platform, self-guided, and free tour program of Key West's historic sites designed to highlight the island's unique multi-cultural history and heritage through the Key West Historic Marker Tours website and phone app.
Originally designed and launched by Bruce Neff under the auspices of Key West Historic Markers Inc., the program merged with Key West Art & Historical Society in 2018 and consists of three primary elements: a map of cultural and museum attractions featuring 121 historic location markers that pay tribute to Key West's colorful past, phone apps that act as a personal museum docent to support those taking the self-led walking tours, and a comprehensive website at KWHMT.org that provides a virtual tour of Key West, historic background and community information, digital collections of local postcards and cigar box art, and links to Google maps.
Key West has one of the largest historic districts with the densest amassing of historic frame vernacular buildings in the country. The island's history encompasses unique architecture, Civil War forts, famous authors' homes, connection to wars and revolutions, once-thriving turtle and sponging industries, sunken treasure galleons, slave ships, Flagler's railroad, boom and bust economies, and much more.
